Herald of Sanguinius - Could be HH spoilers!

Just release for the advent calendar!!

Crowned as the new Emperor of Imperium Secundus, Sanguinius of the Blood Angels faces the very real threat of betrayal from within his new realm. As ever, it falls to his Sanguinary Guard to protect the primarch, and Commander Azkaellon must resort to the most dire of measures...

This I have to listen to! must tie in after the last ultramarine book in the HH series!

Ultramar is isolated from the rest of the Imperium (warp storms) and they don't know what has happened with Terra or the Emperor, so Guilliman, The Lion and Sanguinius decide to create an Imperium Secundus where Sanguy is declared regent, till they find out what's up with the Imperium proper. The idea is that there needs to be something that keeps Humanity united against Horus & Co, with the same ideals the original Imperium had. It's all Guilliman's idea, but he convinces the other primarchs. Ultramar has been hit so hard by the Word Bearers and World Eaters that they seriously consider the option that everything else is gone. Some people see it as a Heresy just as bad as Horus'. That's about it smile.png

Edit: What I really don't understand and they need to tie this in, but if the BA, DA and UM are all together in Ultramar, how come later in the battle for Terra of the three legions only the BA are there.

Can someone tell me - a primarily Blood Angels player who doesn't read much about the Horus Heresy - what's up with this "Imperium Secundus" thing? Context?

In the book "Unremembered Empire", Ultramar is completely cut off from the rest of the galaxy after the Word Bearers and World Eaters turn on the Ultramarines.  Since he's isolated from the rest of the galaxy, Guillemain determines that since he can't confirm that Terra hasn't fallen he has to assume that it has and that Ultramar is all that is left of the Imperium.  Based on this, he founds 'Imperium Secundus', temporarily declaring Macragge the capital of what he has to assume is the last bastion of the Emperor's dream.  He states over and over that should they re-establish contact with Terra and confirm that the Emperor still lives, he'll dissolve Imperium Secundus and everyone can forget it ever existed.

To avoid being perceived as an opportunistic traitor, he refuses to declare himself ruler of the pseudo-empire so he waits around for another primarich to show up that he can put in charge.  Stuff happens that I won't get into, but eventually Sanguinus and the Blood Angels arrive there fresh from Signus and Guillemain declares Sanguinus the ruler of Imperium Secundus.

As an aside, you should totally read the HH novels.  Sanguinus shows up from time to time, as do several key Blood Angels and when they're not being written by James Swallow, are actually quite neat.  Also, the Heresy kind of defines the Blood Angels more than any other loyal legion.

Edit: What I really don't understand and they need to tie this in, but if the BA, DA and UM are all together in Ultramar, how come later in the battle for Terra of the three legions only the BA are there.

My guess is that when he finds out Earth is still out there Sanguinius is so filled with remorse for being made Emperor he flings himself and the legion through a dangerous path to reach earth at all costs.

The others take a more measured approach.

Eh. I read the first book, and I wanted to read more, but then the sequence got so complicated and everyone started warning me that this book is awful, and that one is awful but I have to read it, and this other one is great, no wait it's terrible... it seemed like too much energy.

I'm finishing Nemesis now, but I've read up to Scars. And while some are bad and the primarchs and space marines in general behave like a bunch of teenagers with too much angst, I've been enjoying the whole series quite a lot. If you want good sci-fi go Asimov, if you want Space Marine porn, HH doesn't fail to deliver :)

Rough synopsis:

Everyone is clamouring for Sanguinius' attention now he is the Emperor. As there are still significant threats to his life, Azkaelleon suggests that one of the Sanguinary guard stand as his herald to hear petitions.

This is the Sangiunor. There is some very confusing stuff on how they choose who it is, and there is some stuff with the Lion.

That's about it - it's only 19min long

Can you tell about the stuff with the Lion please?

And

Does the Sanguinor have a name or do they hide it?

Not much with the Lion. He demands to see Sanguinius, Azkealleon refuses. I *think* Sanguinius and the Lion have a fight off screen.

The Sanguinary Guard who becomes the Sanguinor does have a name, but they then conceal it. I don't recall the name atm, not someone we've met before.

There's nothing to suggest the Sanguinor is a Daemon or anything special beyond some pretty icky rituals (lots of blood, and a very Man in the Iron Mask scene when the Sanguinor is masked). That's not to say it doesn't become something later, of course.

Ooh I want to see the two angels bicker!

Plus the ritual sounds like the Red Hot Chili Pepper's past album: "Sex Sugar Blood Magic"

honestly, read em all, some are great, some are bad, some are okay. But you'll generally find which books come into which category will depend on the reader.

Ok, fine, I dug up my copy of Horus Rising and I'll give it another go. I remember enjoying it reasonably well last time. And after that, False Gods, right?

Or you could also follow BL's suggested reading order, which follows more closely the actual timeline than simply reading the books in numerical order... (See http://www.blacklibrary.com/Home/our-ranges-horus-heresy.html )
