Ishagu
And are they performing as well as their points would suggest they should? I'm thinking of running 5 as bodyguards to Draigo: -Apothecary -2 Hammers -2 Psycannons The unit with Draigo would hit 600pts, but it's 14 wounds with FnP, 8 Psycannon shots, 6 Bolters and a whole load of butt kicking in cc. Of course... The issue is getting them there. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/300645-so-does-anyone-run-paladins/ Share on other sites
Brom MKIV
I tried a unit for a couple games, thats it. Actually really liked them but the extra pts investment messed with the rest of my list too much for my tastes and what they contributed. Rurik the blessed
I always play paladins, They're my favorite unit, I ussualy plays them with two psycannon, 1 hammer, 2 halberds and 2 swords. Apothecary is very good when you don't play a hard supporter like Draigo or Tigurius. Now I'm wondering to use a Hammerers Paladins unit. 5 Paladins, with two psycannon, 4 Hammers, 1 Banner. plus a Librarian with hammer and fishing for some protection powers. They should resist enough to make the Counterattack with hammers. (Even more than Terminators) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/300645-so-does-anyone-run-paladins/#findComment-3894023 Share on other sites

Zembar
I'd still rather bring more termies. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/300645-so-does-anyone-run-paladins/#findComment-3894045 Share on other sites

Number crunching gives terminators a distinct advantage for the cost, plus the combat squad utility gives more utility. Why paladins over terminators? For the extra cannon? Ishagu
I just like the idea of a super powered cc unit with decent shooting, survivability and Fnp to boost Draigo even more as I love running him. He gives a squad great mobility with his psychic powers. I'm thinking of running 2 squads of 5 Terminators and a squad of 5 Paladins alongside Dreadknights... Teetengee
If you had trouble fitting enough violence in your land raider paladins might be better than terminators, but otherwise they seem inefficient. Zeratul29
Since hammers are 10 points and they got no pt reductions I'm gonna have to say no. Since 7th came out, I ran a paladin star. It ran amazingly. But now that I'd have to pay an extra 40 pts for that unit, my list wouldn't work, especially since Coteaz perils on doubles from sanctic now. Grand Master Caloth
I run 10, Apothecary w hammer, 2 hammer/cannon, two halberd/cannon, 2 SB/halberd, 3 SB/Hammer, and so far have had both alot of fun and some outstanding success. I have run as blob with the GM and Lib with, and have squaded them to run as two bodyguard squads, and both still allowed good utility and survivability Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/300645-so-does-anyone-run-paladins/#findComment-3894453 Share on other sites
Reclusiarch Darius
They're massively overpriced and functionally don't kill much more than a Terminator squad would, nor are they especially more survivable. Bascially, in any scenario where you take them, you could taking a GKT squad and a Dreadknight, or two GKT squads, or GKT and Interceptors etc. They chew up so many points just to slightly tougher Terminators with WS5. Riptides and other AP2 still melt them, and investing in Draigo just eats up even more points you don't have to spare. They need a price reduction or as others have mentioned, better invul saves. As they are they just die too easily to our usual problems (getting plasma'd, getting melta'd, getting Riptided). Everon
I used too take em but when we got hit by the nerf, I mean 7th edition balance, bat that said screw you GK, again I mean "balance with rest of imperium", paladins arnt worth it. They lost ability to become troop and with paying for melee weapons they became more expensive and no longer justifiable price compared to termies. Even in a 7.7k point game I have saturday id rather take terms then palys Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/300645-so-does-anyone-run-paladins/#findComment-3894546 Share on other sites

raverrn
3 Pallies with a Apoth for FnP Librarians make a LOT of appearances in my lists, and I've been experimenting with a 5-drop with 2 Psycannons, and Apoth and banner as an escort for a Grand Master. Not ideal, but 3 Psycannons and that much melee power is hard to argue with. Grand Master Caloth
Some of us aren't overly enamored of the NDK. Plus, the build I use got cheaper by about 10 pts. Captain Coolpants
Well if you're going against another Marine armies, then paladins are aaaaaallllways mostly worth it. Only 2 Marines with rapid fire plasmas could potentially kill off almost half a terminator squad causing them to run, and causing you to cry.. where as they can only kill off a maximum of 2 paladins. Or most likely take a wound off 2 separate models which is far better. Plus Marines fighting Marines is ridiculous, most of the time, both sides miss, so the ws5 works as well! Ishagu
Yeah, against Tau or Eldar any unit focused on combat is a total waste. If they were t5 it would change them so very much, even if it was a rule similar to the DWKs Well you're up the proverbial with no paddle then, because its literally the only thing keeping us even vaguely competitive. Without DK's, we'd be worse than Sisters. SISTERS. Marines still have melta, and Vindicators, and grav cannon. Oh, and Stormhammers still completely outclass them in melee, even with the storm shield tax. The fact is, our Troop Terminators already do the job fine, we don't need melee specialists, we're an army of force-weapon-wielding psychic Marines. What we desperately need is long-range support and especially anti-tank. The former we can do without by being aggressive and getting into enemy lines ASAP (ie NSF 4 lyfe). The latter we mainly fudge by cramming as many psycannons into our lists as possible. That's my biggest issue with Paladins, even more than their cost. Their role is confused. They lack the staying power of Stormhammers and cost substantially more, a GKT joined by a TDA Inquisitor costs less than a 5-man squad of Paladins with dual psycannon (plus has Stubborn Ld10 and 'Prescience' built in, plus a random Divination power). Nothing they do we want, or can't be done better and cheaper elsewhere. Giving them storm shields or Iron Halos would at least alleviate the Dreadknight comparison (who has 'Sanctuary' built in and is always cheaper than Paladins can be, not to mention he shoots harder and is more mobile). Purgators are orphans for the same reason. If they did something, anything better than Purifiers or Interceptors, we'd take them. Night Vision is a sad joke, as are the Salvo rules, and the narrow point difference between 10 strong with 4 psycannon Purifiers versus Purgators is extra depressing.
