Who is our greatest foe?

What is the worst matchup we can have? Which units do we have to handle with great caution? And what equipment ruins our day, big time?
Mabe we can develope a list here and think about counter measures!

Foe:
Last edition as well as in 7th I struggled against mech eldar (and still do). Lists containing 3+ serpents, 1-2 wraithknights, a bunch of war walker and sometimes falcions and fire prisms that is a lot of high strength, low ap shooting, mostly twin linked or with a reliable BS 4.

Counter:
I try to go first and a-bomb the opponent as hard as possible. I know this plays into the hand of the eldar, as he has the last movement phase then and superior mobility. But it is a round less shooting and skimmers haven't moved reducing their cover.

A knight can kill 3.6 hp on a walker with shooting on average (psycannon, heavy incinerator). Don't forget, they are open topped, so explosion is possible. Wraithknights can be dealt with in CC, but they are as fast as dreadknights are, so a clever opponent stays out of range if possible and has greater weapon range. Serpents just make me cry and when they carry wraithguard it's even more difficult to get close to them. The other tanks are missing the cheat-shield at least.

My greatest foe so far has been myself. I sometimes forget little things that can eventually add up to a lot *cough* soul blaze *cough* or I make a tactical mistake that ends up costing me more then I can ever hope to recover from.... never targeting the damn riptide first again that's for sure. Even managed to forget the entire first psychic phase one game, and I had just managed to land a deep strike close enough to hit 3 different units with cleansing flame too!

Plus my current lack of knowledge of my opponents tends to bite me in the ass, and I'm not just talking about their armies either. My first time playing against orks was against a guy that apparently has a rep for being a bit shady, looked up a bunch of stuff about his units after the game only to find out he cheated quite a bit and unfortunately nobody else was around at the time to catch it. So much for giving people I don't know personally the benefit of the doubt.

Well...yes...GW, ourselves, that guy, surely our boss or heck, capitalizm itself as we constantly lack money for more plastic crack, then surely the wife slash girlfriend when she wants to do relation business or visit the neighbours or her mom comes over, oh no, and even our kids, these anoying little brats who like peek-a-boo over real games. I can understand that, I can relate, totally. Yes. The world is full of enemies out there!

But can we forget this cruel uggly world for a moment and concentrate on the really important stuff here - which is not your mother in law or the pain in your back but the things our glorious little toy soldiers have trouble with - in their world???

Eldar, Tau, Necron. Those three are our worst matchups by far, especially if they Ally. Expect even your best list and tactics to fall apart, just simply because they table wipe you in your Movement, their Shooting and both Assault phases.

Marines are fine, Centurions melt in melee so just get there and you'll be fine. It's a balanced matchup.

Nids can give us problems, but we're their worst nightmare. DK's in particular are incredibly dangerous to them, they have to keep their Exorcrines alive or they're completely screwed. Which is why your Shunt Turn 1, turn on 'Force' and gatling psilencer their Exocrines.

In my opinion it is Tau, they completely reck GK in the shooting face.

it really bums me that some armies have massive advantage over our army. i wonder why matt ward would do this. :/

Why are you blaming Ward? Vetock wrote the tau book, and Ward was gone when the new GK book was written.

In my experience, it's Eldar serpent spam, DE extreme MSU, and invisible centstars. Tau and Necrons can be tough, but smart through smart play I can beat those lists. With serpent spam I generally feel ineffectual against them, as a 3+ cover save is pretty tough to shoot down. Even melee is  a problem, as they're very fast and generally the guys inside can still threaten even my toughest units. DE MSU is difficult simply because it can be very hard to remove enough of them by late game to out score them (although KPs are clearly much easier). A good centstar generally also has a combat beast in it, making assault a dangerous prospect for NDKs. Combined with invisibility, it can be very difficult to pull a win out unless I'm also using an invisible unit to tarpit it.

I feel I can win against tau competently and effectively. It is eldar and dark eldar MSU spam I have trouble against. As it's hard to take them down, 3+ jink is too good combined with all their other rules for serpents. Wraithwing is also a tough match up for me because the person who plays it is a very good player, 17 wraiths, 2 destroyer lords and 4 croissants is a tough matchup for us. Other than that I feel we can win against most any other army. Luck and probablilty also play a huge factor.

Centurion Star isn't that big a deal. Whatever combat hero they've attached is gonna get rekt by a DK in a challenge, and even our Libby's are pretty scary (AP3 falchions or a S6/8 staff, backed up by 'Force'). 'Invisibility' is annoying but it's hard to pull off, and we have plenty of dispel dice for it.

Dark Eldar can be dealt with provided you bring enough dakka. Dreadknights with gatling psilencer and heavy psycannon will ding down a Ravager or Raider each normally (open topped also means you immobilise or weapon destroy more often when you pen). Even our basic storm bolters are a threat if you focus fire, AV10 is pretty weak. Also Storm Raven, although you'll have to content with their glass cannon aircraft (dark lances hurt). In that context both you and the DE player are looking for wipeout anyway, as he can't play the objective game anyway.

I really don't know how we deal with Serpent Spam. I suppose you'd focus down the ones carrying Dragons, then murder the Dragons. Or Wraithguard if they're taking them as well or instead. They just have so much dakka they'll vape your Terminators with massed fire anyway. DK's can catch Serpents but they'll eat so much AP2 doing so. I think you'll need Allies in that matchup. I'd probably take our Grav+Draigo combo against that.

Wraithguard hurt so much and coupled with a serpent are a dangerous CC (not melee) unit. Mostly the eldar will use his superiour mobility to stay out of range but against GK it might be a good tactic to castle up. Put walkers and weaker stuff in the back and have serpent(s) with wraithguard ready to prevent a charge against them.

My current game stats are

Eldar 2-1

Dark eldar 4-0

Chaos 2-0

Daemons 1-0

Tyranids 3-0

Orks 2-0

Sisters 3-1

Imperial Guard 5-1

Raven guard 1-2

White scars 0-1

Dark Angels 0-3

Blood Angels 0-1

Space wolves 3-0

Vanilla 2-0

Necrons 1-1

So looking at it, fighting as pure gk, other space marines have been the strongest opponent in my area. main combo used is dp with combi meltas or just mass hammer shield termies. That lack of extra invul is the biggest down fall vs other sm armies. Sadly in a local league 90% of my randomly drawn foes are all spess mahreens!

I feel sorry for impguard, lol. Still have to find a way to beat GK alpha strike with my guardsmen. Its a brutal matchup.
