Spazmonkey
Hi guys quick question. if you run an allied detachement and that detachement meets the requirements for a formation under their rules can you use the formation rules for that group. E.G. if you allied Arjacs shield brothers, can they use the formation bonuses, or if you allied the void claws could they use their formation rules? Lord Blackwood
the formation acts as its own separate detachment no units can exist both in a detachment and a formation ( Combined Arms Detachment ) - say this is your main detachment 1hq 2 troops yadda yadds (Allied Detachment ) 1 Hq 1 troop blah blah blah ( Arjacs Shield Brothers Formation) ^ this is legal All three are seperate detachments from each other if your question is , can i bring arjac and his hammerbros with the allied detachment and get the formation rules the answer is no.(Combined Arms Detachment ) (Allied detachment ) 1 hq 1 troop Arjac and 5 Hammernators in a Crusader ^ This is also legal but wouldnt give you the rules for Arjac Shield brothers Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/300675-allied-units-detachements/#findComment-3894738 Share on other sites
skeletoro
it would be a detachment, and it would be an ally (ie a different faction). but it wouldn't be an 'allied detachment' e.g. 1 HQ, 1-3 troops, objective secured etc. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/300675-allied-units-detachements/#findComment-3894771 Share on other sites
TopToffee
Can you take (using Bladewolf's method above of distinguishing) (Primary detachment) - from Codex Astra Militarum for example (Arjac's Shield Brothers) Without taking an additional Space Wolf allied detachment? Obviously the example above is reversed from what i would be doing (Wolves would always be my primary). Might open up some options i hadn't foreseen for other allies though. skeletoro
Just remember that every unit belongs to exactly one detachment - no more, no less. Formations are a special kind of detachment; If it's part of Arjac's Shield Brothers, then it isn't part of a combined arms or' allied' detachment ( ie. the two detachments in the main rulebook that have force org charts.) Yeah I understand that - just wasn't sure if you could take - for example - an IG/AM formation without ALSO taking an IG/AM detachment to "hang the formation off", for want of a better phrase Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/300675-allied-units-detachements/#findComment-3895896 Share on other sites

So you can run a primary detachment and then have any other armies formations just tacked on? and the formation still gets its formation bonuses? does that not defeat the purpose of the allied detachment so a small degree. Donkalleone
Formations are exactly for that reason Banned or heavely restricted in tournaments Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/300675-allied-units-detachements/#findComment-3899407 Share on other sites
