Badger Airbrush question(s)... maybe time for an upgrade

Recommended Posts

Should I buy  a Fine needle for an old Badger 150 or take the plunge and upgrade to a Krome, Patriot or Sotar?

My concern is wasted paint on the Siphon feed brush vs. gravity  and the results of the fine tip on a 150 compared to the other models mentioned.

Here is a little background...

I've been using my wife's old dependable badger 150 siphon feed airbrush which is a great airbrush.  It's like an old pick up truck that just keeps on running.  It comes with 3 needles - Fine, Medium and Large.   The Fine needle is completely wrecked but she never uses it anyway.

I currently use the medium needle and sometimes the large needle for priming and base coating.

I enjoy using the airbrush a lot and would like to start airbrushing fine details like power swords and such.

Would appreciate any input, opinions, personal experiences especially concerning paint clogging and needle sizes etc.

I'm also considering a Badger Nail Air brush like this one  with a .22mm needle/ nozzle.  Sometimes you can find them on eBay for a lot less.

Gravity feed with  no cup - just drop the paint straight in.  Maybe kinda cool using the new Game Air Vallejo Range.

I'd still have the 150 to do all the heavy work of priming and base coating.

If you are comfortable with the Badger range of products and wish to stick with them, Amazon has it going for USD$105... but it fluctuates.  I got my Sotar 2020 for USD$69 last year.

Gravity feed airbrushes are overall more sensitive to paint than gravity feed and perform faster.  A small cup is advisable especially when you want to paint a semi decent amount of parts.  The siphon should do well still for larger spray areas.

0.2 is nice, but you have to be careful as the acrylic pigments can clog it quite easily if not thinned properly.  0.3-0.5 are good general purpose sizes.
