40K as chess pieces?

So I had an interesting idea to get more use out of my models than just playing 40k. I kinda want to go back to roots, and play more chess.

So, Using only infantry models (TWC are too big for a chess board), what models would you use for what pieces.

I was thinking:

 Pawns- Blood Claws - Cheap basic infantry

 Rooks- Long Fangs - Range across the board, strategic lynchpin unit

 Knights-Jump Pack Marine - Used to get in tight places, very spcialized unit

 Bishop- Scouts - Very specific application

 Queen- Wolf Guard - The most versatile unit, body guard to the Wolf Lord

 King- Wolf Lord - Obvious, He's the Head honcho.

If you think something different, let me know, and tell me why you think so. This doesn't have to be space wolf specific, I've got Ideas for using my Necrons for the opposing pieces.

I really like this idea, it makes the game of chess more appealing aesthetically and also provides another use for models when perhaps you are finding 40k a bit stale and want to take a break. Also very easy to incorporate certain models to represent certain things in the game of chess, so you could, provided they were up for it, still play your local gaming opponents but in a very different way.

Great idea :)

Perhaps if you made your own, slightly larger board you could use different models. Like fenrisian wolves for pawns, Twc as knights.

My first reaction was that the Knight would be an Imperial Knight. But then I realized that it might not fit on the board all that well biggrin.png

I had a similar thought a while back:

Pawns - Guardman

Rooks - AdMech guy

Knights - Solar Auxilia, Scion or any other military unit with a higher social standing

Bishop - Ministorum Priest

Queen - Sororitas or Female Noble

King - Male Noble (like a rogue trader)

I preferred using Imperial organizations and not SM because that gothic style fits the chess board much better.

If I were to use Space Wolves, it had to be models hand-carved out of wood to fit the style.

You know this was the basis of Mav's tavern brawls here at the fang!

Anyway...

Rook = Dreadnought.

Bishop = Rune Priest.

Knight = Thunderwolf/Swiftclaws/Skyclaws.

Pawn = Grey Hunters.

Queen = Wolf Guard/Lone Wolf

King = Wolf Lord/Wolf Priest/Special Character

You have to look at the Base Size cause a differense quickly generates Problems. Use Banners etc to Differentiate the looks .

I have made a Fantasy Chess WIP (sadly its stopped but the Pics are still there):

Base size surely wouldn't matter too much if the board has been home made to a larger size, especially as pawns in general are smaller and as long as its within set squares it won't matter, its scale more than anything. Its chess ... Can use anything you want as the models as long as you're clear which model represents which chess piece.

One thing that might help the important pieces stand out would be to put them up higher.  Think "standing on a pedestal" for the king, queen, knight, and bishop, maybe with the king and queen up a little higher.  if you use a dread for the rooks then no pedestal is required, they do a good job of standing out just as they are.

Pawns - Scouts or standard troops

Rook - Terminator(or Grey knight terminator) or standard marine (if scouts were used as pawns)

Knight - Jump pack troop

Bishop - Chaplain or librarian msn-wink.gif

Queen - Sister of battle

King - Terminator lord with flowing cape and lots of Bling or an inquisitor of appropriate grandness cool.png

Mithril

Excellent Ideas, I was kinda sticking with Space wolves since it's one of the largest factions I play.

I'd be doing the other side in necrons

Pawns- Warriors

Rooks- Immortals

Knights- Lychguard/pratorians

Bishops- Obyron/Lord

Queen-Crypteks/Anrakyr

King-Overlord/Trazyn

My Tau don't really lend themselves to chess, but if I had to try,

Pawns- Drones

Rooks- Fire warriors

Knights- Crisis Suits

Bishops- Fireblades

Queen- Crisis bodyguard

King- Farsight

Like I said, hard for me to do tau using only what I have.

I thought it'd be a fun Idea, and a neat way to use the models. Glad to see everyone's creative side away from the hustle and bustle of 40K.

I have this very project on the go at the moment!

I decided to run mine with 40mm bases on a sandwich style board that I have made and sprayed (really need to tidy up the paint-bleed and varnish it now).
