Thousand Sons

Have you read the Horus Heresy Novel "A Thousand Sons" by Graham McNeill? It shows the Thousand Sons in combat and out before the heresy up to and including the battle of Prospero. You can continue your reading with "Prospero Burns" by Dan Abnett which tells the same story of the battle of Prospero from the space wolves side. There is also the Ahriman Series written by John French. although this takes place after the Scouring and is how the Thousand Sons become  the Chaos Space Marines that you know and love. But it takes place after the Horus Heresy and the Rubric. Thousand Sons get a part in the book "Battle for the Abyss" with one of the characters being a Thousand Son. And Suprisingly the narrator and main character in the "Talon of Horus" by Aaron Dembski-Bowden is also a Thousand Son. Art wise, not much that I have found portrays the Thousand Sons. Forge World has some conceptual art that they had at Opening Day 2013 before the Prospero book was pushed back. there are some photos floating around of it.

Tactics wise, from what Ive read is that a large portion of the legion are psykers that all belong to a different Cult of Magic. Corvidae use divination to aid allies and disrupt enemies, Pryae is all about using fire to destroy enemies and shield allies.  Pavoni  which control body chemistry to heal allies and destroy enemies.  Athenean which is reading and transmiting thoughts.  and finally Raptora that use telekenisis in offence and defense. they use all of these in concert with each other so they can support the weaknesses of the others and protect the non-psyker legionaries. This makes for some really awesome reading when it all comes together.

Notable Figures include: Magnus, the Crimson King and Primarch of the Thousand Sons. Ahzek Ahriman, Magister Templi of the Corvidae and one of the members of Magnuses? Inner Circle. there are also the other Magister Templi that all take a prominent roll in "A Thousand Sons"  that are Khalophis - Magister Templi of the Pyrae, Beleq Uthizzar - Magister Templi of the Athenean, Hathor Maat - Magister Templi of the Pavoni and finnaly Phosis T'Kar - Magister Templi of the Rapora.

If you want to know the spirit of the legion (that what "I want to live the legion" sounds like to me"), then I really recommend that you re-read The Thousand Sons. If you dont want to buy it you can probably find an E-Book version somewhere. Hands down the best source material for the soul of the legion. but anyway in my reading I got that the core basis of the legion are the Enumerations which are the way that the thousand sons remove the cloud of emotions and distractions when they are dealing with anything.  Once they reach the highest Enumeration they are totally separated from emotions. They STRIVE for the preservation of all knowledge. For them, there is nothing that should not be known. There is a part in Thousand Sons where Ahzek takes time in the middle of a firefight to teach the remembrancer that is attached to his squad how the legion makes war. IN THE MIDDLE OF A FIGHT. Ahzek is credited to saying that "The only true evil is ignorance and the only good is knowledge". This really horribly backfires on them with the edict of Nikea, and causes the wolves to be unleashed on them.

Thousand Sons will always be my first legion.

Alpha legions I love, but they pale besides the coolness of the Thousand Sons! In addition to the above mentioned books, try and read the Ahriman series (2 books out so far) where there are further hints to names and departments in the legion. :)

So looking for as much on the Thousand Sons as we all know. Numbers, campaigns, notable figures, combat styles (other then sorcery), known companies, ships, the names of the cadres, and any artwork that would inpire. Sources would be appreciated.

From the IA on Sons' combat styles

"Combat Doctrine

The Thousand Sons were well known for preferring to avoid close combat, instead relying upon their mastery of psychic power and sorcery to carry the day. Guile, feint, confusion and misdirection were their hallmarks; all stratagems better used at range. Many were the occasions a Thousand Sons detachment would accomplish through illusion or trickery what a brother Legion would pay for dearly in blood.

Whatever else it may have changed, the Rubric of Ahriman affected that doctrine very little. The sorcerer lords of the Thousand Sons still use their ghost-brethren as implacable bulwarks of gunfire, around which they construct elaborate plans of guile and misdirection to achieve victory, all driven home with a timely application of potent magic."

As for artwork aside from just using google this is about the most complete collection of pre heresy Thousand sons artwork I've seen------>. http://z13.invisionfree.com/The_First_Expedition/index.php?showtopic=157
