What has she done to me? Decisions, decisions...

Well, my spectacularly amazing fiance has donned her 'Santa's Little Helper' moniker and done a sterling effort again this year.  As well as getting me the finishing touches to my Space Wolves army, she's got me my first Horus Heresy books - these ones in fact

The only problem I have now is this....which heresy-era army do I go for?  Should I go for something completely different to my norm (I have a sizeable Dark Angels army (1 battle company, lots of Deathwing and a bit of Ravenwing), circa 3000 points of Deathwatch (which is played using Codex: Space Marines), 3000-ish points of Space Wolves and about 1200 points of Blood Angles).

So - do I wait until one of my armies listed above gets their own HH-era army list, or do I go for one we have already?  If I go for one there, how did you choose your Legion?

Cheers,

Marv

I'd recommend giving the top stickied thread a read, titled 'The Legion For You.'

A lot of good ideas have been tossed about that might help you make a decision. If not, ask your question again there and plenty will respond with more ideas.

For me I looked at the Heresy from a 40k POV and decided that the VII were the legion for me. I love the idea that the IF went from very calculated at terra to reckless at the iron cage incident, both traits they poses by the bucket full. At terra the could ill afford the zeal that shone when they assaulted the iron cage. In my eyes they are as impeccable as the Iron hands yet poses the battle lust of the World Eaters, but they are in control of how they employ each trait.

Seriously are people going out of their way to sell the Imperial Fists to me..? I didn't like them before but now I think they're kinda awesome...

Personally, I had a bit of a journey picking my legions. I looked at pretty much every legion... At the moment, my main Traitor force is going to be Alpha Legion, basically because everytime I read anything about them I'm like 'I really want to model these guys and play them on the tabletop'. The scheming, plotting, black ops super spy dealio they have really appeals to me. I am doing a Sons of Horus allied force because I love Horus, I love the SoH brutality and gang warfare and I have already bought some SoH models... ;) I'll probably do some other allied forces (Night Lords, maybe some Iron Warriors...) because so many of the legions appeal to me.

I think I'm also going to do an Ultramarines force. They're kind of the complete opposite to AL, regimented, very disciplined, very 'soldiery'. Extremely competent at warfare but much more inflexible and uncreative than the AL. I actually really like how the UM have been portrayed so far, and the cobalt and gold armour looks really cool (I'm not sure if doing them and AL will be too much blue though :/) And again I'll probably do some allied forces (I love the Raven Guard, Imperial Fists are growing on me, etc...), and probably a Solar Auxilia force too.

But yeah. Took me ages to get to this point and I've barely narrowed it down...

I will forever say Night Lords, good rite of war, Curze is both a beautiful model (drying on the kitchen worktop currently) and a bit of a beast. Hammer of wrath is better (d3+1 at str. 7 none too shabby) plus hit and run, and his predator gauntlet claws, aaaand his throwing blades. All under forced cover of darkness. Add Sev and some deepstriking termies, with appropriately armed terror squads, and you have a nasty little piece of hell that munches troops, that may not be able to shoot back enough to stop you slitting throat. But i'm bias. Polux is a saucey slice of astartes though

It's pretty simple really

First of all, you can still collect those Legions. They just don't have any of the attention lavished on them that the other Legions do. But, technically, it's still an option, and one you should consider if you're happy to paint up basic vehicles/tacticals while waiting for special units/Primarchs/rules.

However, just ask yourself this; are you prepared to spend what will almost certainly be be hundreds upon hundreds of dollars/pounds (to get any decent sized force) when it isn't your favourite Legion, and then still be happy to do that again when your chosen Legion comes out?

If yes, then head over to the 'Legion for you' sticky. If not, then wait!

As for how to choose a Legion, read through the fluff in the Horus Heresy books by FW then look at their rules.

As someone who had a hard time picking, here are my suggestions to look into: Iron hands can have a legit all tank army bar troop choices, Salamanders have super flamers, Night Lord have a cool theme, as do World Eaters.

Ultimately, pick the legion you'd like to play most from a fluff and a rule perspective. It's why Slipstreams will be here any minute to praise the Sons of Dorn, and why I suggested the above four. Also, keep in mind with Salamanders, you can replace Heavy Bolters with Flamers. And there are Jetbikes with heavy Bolters. Dragon Jetbikes. Also, the super units always look cool.

Did I hear my name called in the same sentence Dorn was mentioned :0?!?!?

...I would post a proper reply but Im on my phone in an airport waiting to get on a domestic flight to go to the beach (Phillipines). Soooo yeah.

Besides, Ive already converted a bunch to the color yellow I can let one slip :p

...for now /glares at other contenders
