Thunderwolf Loadouts and Squad sizes

Greetings all,

I'm curious; what squad sizes and loadouts do you guys like for your Thunderwolf Cav, including things like ICs that you may attach to them?

For myself, I'm currently contemplating a Wolf Lord (TWC, Wolf Claws, P.Fist, Runic Armor and the necklace from the CoF book) attached to a unit of four TWC (2 naked, 2 PF + SS), and 2-3 Iron Priests on TWC with Cyberwolves (not exceeding the number of TWs, for majority toughness rules).

Part of me is contemplating just covering the table with cheap naked Thunderwolves, but I do reckon something like the Adamantium Lance would give me massive troubles if I did that.

Anyway, what do you guys take, and why?

Thanks!

TWC aren't you Knight killers. Do not attempt to use them against anything like Knights unless you have plenty of ablative wounds.

Your Lord is fine. IP are too expensive in my eyes. I used to run them but now I am content without. My setup is Lord on TWM with RA, SS, Krakenbone Sword, Fellclaw's Teeth, riding with 5-6 TWC with 2-3 SS, 1 PF, depending on points. I do not want or need more. One unit as hammer has served me well, especially when you use psychic support on them.

Basically, it depends on the rest of your list and what their purpose is supposed to be.

What kind of psychic support do they need?

I think this is a topic that has a lot of folks preferring different load outs.

It depends on your style, your game, your models. It's really your choice.

I will say that I like your load out, Joasht. I am not sure you need all that IP/CW however.

The 'Bestest' lord kt is TWC/RA/SS/KBS/FC but I still play the PF/WC Lord all the time. He's damn good. It's not all about minmaxing, uless it's all about minmaxing. And in that case I am the wrong person to take advice from...

End of Line

Krakenboner is not the best. He has the best defense along with decent offense, along with the Black Death version from the codex. He is your Warlord and point man.

The PF/WC dude has more potent offense, you not the best defense. He is usally my second Lord, if I take a second.

Choose accordingly.

As for psychic support, I am mainly looking at Invisibility or Endurance. But anything that makes them tougher or gives them a safe is good enough.

Like many expensive units it is important to keep Thunderwolves as cheap as you realistically can, going overboard on special weapons for every model is not the best idea.

In general squads of between 3-5 seem to work well with 2-3 Storm Shields put at the front of the squad for survivability and 1-2 special cc weapons of one kind or another, power axes or power fists seem fairly popular.

I run my thunderwolves one of two ways, If I need them cheap, I go SS/PM on all of them, If I can afford the extra 15ppm, I go SS/TH. I use TWC for vehicle hunting, when I use them. Since I don't use them much, I only have a squad of 3. I do want to get some bikes and more TWC, so I can do a full CoF mounted list. I'm learning to like them, but I'm not a really close combat oriented player.

Hey , threw up a little post showing off my cav and my plans for them,

I have ran my thunder wolves into knights twice. and twice destroyed the knight while only losing 1-2 cav members. Well worth it. as much as people don't think that they can kill knights, when we have that many attacks with rending, you can reliably count on rending.

I max squads out with 6 bros, 6 shields, 2 fists, , i like to run a krakenbone lord with them also , or if its the 2 other mirror image squads i run, i have iron priests w 4 cyber wolves with them.

20 attacks per squad at initiative 4 with rending, hitting on 3's most of the time(i run supplement) . then a lord with 6 attacks at initiative 5, then 10 attacks that are str 10 at initiative 1, and if your running an iron priest in the squad theres 16 additional initiative 4 attacks and 4 str 10 , apt 1 initiative 1 attacks (sorry if this seems all over the place)

squad with lord : 36 rending attacks

squad with priest:34 rending attakcs
squd with priest: 34 rending attacks

as you can see, rending is reliable when you spam awesomewolf cavalry.

to great success i've used my cavalry in any role i needed at that moment, i quite literally charge them at what i want tar pitted/dead and i'm laugin.

Keep in mind tho, everyone has different thoughts because everyone plays differently . your best bet is to play around and see what you like more. i played around with armless cavalry for a long while until i decided what to glue on

I did the first part of my tutorial on how to quick and easily get a nice looking thunderwolf that is definitely a table top standard. Please head on over to my blog to check it out. Also don't be shy to hit the subsribe/follow button under followers on the right hand side.

Thanks in advance, and as always. Happy Painting

I have no idea how this thread became flooded with my posts, but i appologize

Storm shields on every wolf though is a must if your meta is flooded with ap2, its an investment, but it's an investment that helps get what you want to point b.

Power Mauls are good. That is all. Well, not really... I have been running one on the pack leader of my 3 man TWC pack. Str7 possible rend and even less possible concussive. Yep. It's good. If the mauls from the DA Black Knight kit weren't so damn hard to find/expensive I'd model a pack of them for certain!!
