A reaper fall from grace

I currently have a small about of 30k marines, and decided they should be Heresy Era Death Guard.  I would love for the force to be usable for both 30k and 40k(30k not popular here) and be able to ally with my nurgle demons and use them as count as plague marines/ MON csm.  I was wondering if there was a era in the horus heresy before the death guard become plague marines on the way to terra, but show nurgle influence.  A time where they start to learn the truth of chaos and nurgle start  to take interest.  A time where they were still death guard but started showing corruption and attract daemon support.

Another question is did the death guard fall to nurgle at the moment they were lost in the warp or did it happen gradually like the rest of the traitor legion?  If it was in one fell swoop, did the whole death guard fleet get lost on the way to terra at once or were there others ships that did not get lost in the warp because they were fighting other battles else where.

Basically, Can i have clean-ish death guard, but also have some corruption and nurgle daemons fluff wise.  Usually I am up on death guard fluff, but they really do not get much screen time in the HH series beside Flight and echo of the long night.

The way it is now, yes, Mortarion did start to turn to the whole "understanding Chaos to destroy it" thing. It shows up in the novel Vengeful Spirit and the short story Daemonology (I think this one is only available as from BL's website but definitey what you're looking for). Plus Typhon and maybe some of those close to him were definitely shown the ways a bit by Erebus, and who knows what Typhon gets up to when Mortarion's not around.

Plus they don't get lost in the warp until right before the move on Terra which is something like 7-8 years in, so there's plenty of time before the big change for lots to happen.
