Oh GOD.. not Cleansing flame AGAIN!

Okay.. so I did a bunch more research, and as it's written into the Nova special rule that falls under the witchfire rules, you can definitely use it when in close combat.

Oh god, someone shoot me, I'm bringing it back up.. But hey, my local store all agreed that its totally legit, even if its brokenly unfair.

I understood it as you couldn't manifest a witchfire at all in combat, but these rules allow for it.  Kinda like if a rule said you can reroll rerolls, would you say that rule doesn't matter because it says in the main book that you can never reroll rerolls?

It doesn't say that. Read the entire sentence. It's talking about targeting and hitting models in close combat, not casting.

Indeed!

I don't have my book on me (@ work).

Thank god. My opponent knows a lot about the game, and when I described my intent (Gate of infinity out of melee combat then use CF) he described and read (must've been selectively) that I didn't have to exit melee combat to use CF.  I was almost 100% confident that I read here that it definitely doesn't work that way, but I'm in no place to argue about it.

Here you go:

A nova power automatically targets and hits all enemy units (including Flyers and Flying Monstrous Creatures) within the psychic power’s maximum range, regardless of line of sight, being locked in combat, intervening models/terrain and so on. Otherwise, a nova is treated like a shooting attack, and indeed will have a profile like a ranged weapon. Only one unit that is within the power’s maximum range can attempt to Deny the Witch.

You missed this part

Witchfire

Witchfire powers are shooting attacks. Indeed, they are often referred to as psychic
shooting attacks, and many have profiles similar to ranged weapons. Just like when
shooting a weapon, a Psyker must be able to see the target unit (or target point) and
cannot be locked in combat
if he wishes to manifest a witchfire power.

Nova are witchfire powers. so... don't... sorry

That's what I've been arguing the entire time. (Against using CF in combat) but I was corrected in a practice match. Thanks for making sure I wasn't wrong initially.
