Need some help with what units I can use

Just a quick question on this.

 

Basically I've got the bulk of my Word Bearers under way and I've just ordered the first of my Solar Auxila Veletaris Storm Sections but I'm now looking at Ad Mech.

 

I seem to remember vaguely something about tech marines being able to take the battle automata as a unit, is that right or did I dream it?

 

Ideally what I'm hoping to do is take Astartes supported by Imperial Army but still take battle automata but not sure if that is possible.

You totally can! A Forge Lord Consul can take a Cortex Controller (and I think certain special characters come with those too) that unlocks Thallax and Castellax as optional heavy support. I'm pretty sure that's how that works, anyway.

Also, on p. 265 of Massacre, it says a cortex controller unlocks battle-automata "of any single type" as an Elites choice. Vorax are also battle-automata, so it follows that they would also be available. They don't appear in the red book, though, so some clarification from FW might help. (This would mean that Castellax are available in both elite and heavy support.)

Your SA allies may also take Thallax or Castellax as heavy support if they have an Enginseer with a Cortex Controller (see pages 263/290/291 of Conquest).  So if you don't want to take a Forge Lord in your Word Bearers, there are other ways to unlock them.  The Age of Darkness army system only allows for a single allied detachment, though, so you won't be able to take a Legion list + SA allies + AdMech allies.  The AdMech will have to be worked into one of the other two detachments.
