Neely
let me know what you all think, its my first go at painting camo any tips on shading and highlighting the camo would help. I thinking of doing my cadian shock troops in the same colour, grey armour and the green camo Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301317-neelys-wip/ Share on other sites
WarriorFish
Very nice colours, the camouflage looks great so well done on that :) For shading and such the best thing to do is use washes, GW's are good. They're fantastic for detailed models like Guardsmen are with the folds of fabric and armour plate bits (Marines less so). For the actual camo colours I wouldn't bother as that would be far too time consuming but if were that mad I'd just do a border style highlight on them. Neely
I did try using a Biel-tan green wash but it changed the colours on the camo too much. guess I will just leave it for now. ive just finished building the other 2 models and need to get them painted. I also still have to undercoat and paint my Officio Prefectus Commissar, might try and paint him in a Nazi SS type uniform, as the officers sound kind of like the Nazis from what ive read in the codex Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301317-neelys-wip/#findComment-3906475 Share on other sites
WarriorFish
The commissariat has much more in common with the Soviets, not just in sharing a name. For my camo I only wash the green before the camo colours go on top, it's about getting the right base coat to put the pattern on most of all and that's less of an issue with your scheme as it's fairly expansive. scatmandoo
Looks good and fairly simple too. Keep it up! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301317-neelys-wip/#findComment-3906725 Share on other sites
our_baz
Good work on the camo, really nice an clean pattern like it a lot. For the shading I would apply a wash to the predominant colour, then highlight. I your case I would apply the dark green, apply the wash, then go back then highlight with your dark green keeping the washed colour in the recesses. From there I would apply the rest of your camo in flat colours. Your standard of painting is really good an the model looks great. The grey armour doesn't really do it for me, for me I would paint the armour in one of your secondary camo colours probably the light green. But regardless it looks good, like to see more. Neely
I was planning on doing a grey urban type camo but couldn't get it to look right, I'm still not sure on my army colour, I want something that looks good but different. I'm finding it hard to get the camo pattern right Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301317-neelys-wip/#findComment-3907675 Share on other sites
our_baz
The pattern you use is good dont change it. I run an urban camo on my armour (see my gallery). Try a dark grey for your main colour to replace the dark green, then have your patterns in white and black. Neely
You camo looks good reminds me of the strange camo on some the American battleships. I'm putting together my first Cadian inf tomorrow, if I get the time I will have a go at doing something a bit different Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301317-neelys-wip/#findComment-3907698 Share on other sites
GrandMasterAralia
Cool camo! About shading, I'd do as suggested above. Shade the base colour with a wash and then add the camo pattern afterwards, while keeping some shade left in recesses.. It's time consuming but it'll look great.. If you're feeling crazy give the patterns a very fine edge highlight to make them pop ;) iim doing this with my urban camo storm troopers atm, looks cool, takes aaaaaageees ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301317-neelys-wip/#findComment-3907928 Share on other sites
WarriorFish
Yes, that's what I do too but I don't think it's too time consuming as you can do several Guardsman at once and busy yourself with other things as the wash dries :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301317-neelys-wip/#findComment-3907959 Share on other sites
Neely
I've just painted up the camo on a bullgryn with 3 greys and a black using wet blending. It's still drying and it's looking ok. Once I have it looking a bit better I will post a photo. It took a while to do think I might have used a bit too much retarder. Neely
so heres my next attempt at camo, I think it looks better in person then on the photo, anyway let me know what you all think. GrandMasterAralia
I think it needs to be more contrast'y... But that might just be the picture. But what I can see of it looks really good :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301317-neelys-wip/#findComment-3908693 Share on other sites
WarriorFish
I agree with Aralia, it looks like a great method but it could do with standing out a bit more. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301317-neelys-wip/#findComment-3908765 Share on other sites
Neely
Yea i like it but your right it doesn't really stand out great, back to the drawing board. I've been putting together my first squad of Cadian shock troops, it's been a slow process! There's so many mould lines, surely GW could do a better job. WarriorFish
The Guardsman kits and moulds are old now, so this is to be expected. The new kits (such as my shiny Knight) don't appear to have a single line on them! Think of it as earning your place in the Regiment, a trial we all had to pass Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301317-neelys-wip/#findComment-3910045 Share on other sites
Neely
Not had much time to get to work on my army this week, but today a parcel arrived from GW, so I've spent my night preparing and basing my new vostroyan troops, really impressed with the detail on these models and they didn't have much of a mould line. Just need the bases to dry so I can undercoat them http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/gallery/image/143915 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301317-neelys-wip/#findComment-3915773 Share on other sites
WarriorFish
As long as you're making progress that's the main thing, we do have lives rudely getting in the way of hobby time after all :P I'm looking forward to seeing some Vostroyans painted up, we've not had any for a while :tu: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301317-neelys-wip/#findComment-3916021 Share on other sites
Neely
They are now primed and based, just trying to decided what shade of red to do them. Also I'm going to put snow on the bases, I've seen people using baking powder. What's everyone's advice on this? I want it to look good they are on a rocky base which I painted black and the highlighted with a light grey. elmo
I don't know if it is just me but I am getting a sore neck looking at the pictures ;) I have never tried the baking soda method so the best I can advise is that you check out some you-tube videos but you can buy white flock as an alternative. The urban cam looks ok but as others have written it could do with a little more contrast to help it stand out. The Firstborn looks good. Have you tried to use Agrax earthshade on the red as it will give more depth. I just acquired 2 squads of these so I will be joining you at some point as a member of the Vostroyan owners club :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301317-neelys-wip/#findComment-3917158 Share on other sites
Neely
I have no idea why they are all coming out sideways, I will try and change it on the next few I post. I have been using agrax earthshade on the whole mini, it gives the metals a nice look. I have just tried to put snow on my first base, I've used pva glue and then dusted it with bicarbonate of soda. I will post a photo once it dries. These are great minis, I might get another couple of squads and maybe paint them in green or blue jackets. elmo
I have had a look at your gallery and it looks like you have saved the photos like that. What you need to do is to click on the photo... Below the main photo are some smaller photos allowing you to scroll through that album and below those photos, on the left hand side are the tool buttons to rotate the image (second and third button on my screen). Most of the photos i have checked will need you to "rotate right". If you want a larger photo try the direct link method rather than a thumbnail as it means that we can see your models in their full glory directly from this thread.
