The Castigators
sDTN0fr.jpg

The Castigators Chapter has existed, in one form or another, since approximately 2005 - making them ten years old! I have been fortunate that they've always been warmly received by the internet, and am proud that they've proven inspirational for other users over the years. This post is intended to serve as a repository for the Castigators as I continue to develop them. For their Index Astartes article, please see below.

Thank you for your interest, both - it is certainly appreciated.

So, some plans for my Castigators force:

  • Captain Anteas of the Fifth
  • Chaplain Punitus
  • Tactical Squad
  • Tactical Squad
  • Dreadnought

That leads towards 22 true-scaled Marines.

Some ideas:

Captain Anteas

The original background I wrote for Anteas:

Captain Anteas, Master of the Marches, Captain of the Fifth Company

As the youngest Captain within the entire Chapter, Anteas has been given the honour of commanding the 5th 'Shield Bearers' Company. He has worked hard to ensure he has the full loyalty of every Marine under his command. Backed up by a core of experienced Sergeants, the Fifth Company is battle-capable, and already several trophies and tributes adorn the walls of the Fifth Chapel. Anteas is known to confide in his Sergeants and his Lexicanium, often attempting to discern the best route of action. He has clashed on several occasions with Captain Caphius, who considers him to be incapable of the decisive action warranted by a Commander of the Adeptus Astartes. Within the Chapter, Anteas is known as a moderate, and this has not endeared him to the more zealous elements within the Chapter. The Fifth Company's Standard consists of a scourge striking.

My current plan revolves around using the Forgeworld Abaddon to form the basis of the Captain. I've seen this Praetor by AridMonk, and he's validated a lot of my ideas. Of course, I would need to saw the back out of the model and give him a backpack and new arms - but I think the basic idea is sound.

I'll need to decide which bare head to use for the Captain, and also which weaponry to give him. I do like the idea of a no-frills Captain using a bolt pistol and chainsword, but then again I think he ought to have some special weaponry. The old fluff had Anteas using a sword called the Sword of Sorrow; I would need to source a suitable power sword for him. I would likely stay with a bolt pistol for him, though.

Chaplain Punitus

http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120213210452/warhammer40kfanon/images/5/5c/Cas_Chappy_Low.jpg

With a chapter as zealous as the Castigators, it makes sense to make a Chaplain. One option is to use the Terminator Chaplain legs. They do come across as slightly "fat", though. I have these Tartaros legs, with a tabard taken from the Deathwatch Knights:

http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/INQ28/Legs_zps80552f76.jpg

I would likely look to using some bits from the new plastic power-armoured Chaplain - he will need a suitable Crozius, and I would possibly give him a hand flamer to add to the zealous piety.

Tactical Squads

Two tactical squads, a token tribute to the idea of a "legal force" - although these Marines will never see a true 40k battlefield. Still, I want to explore basic Astartes from my Chapter, and I think that they will look very cool en masse. I am somewhat inspired by my first Astartes, from the 2nd edition boxed set, who formed a squad equipped with missile launcher and flamer. I would perhaps like to emulate that squad in some way.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z121/mnesimache/Castigators/caetrus2.jpg

Some longer-term fans of the Castigators may remember Senior Sergeant Caetrus, a hideously-scarred veteran of the Chapter. I would like to bring him to life as the Sergeant of one of the squads.

Dreadnought

I've never particularly liked the Contemptors, preferring the boxy look of the plastic Dreadnought - until I saw Brother Heinrich's contemptor here. I am definitely interested in replicating this conversion, though.

And beyond...

Beyond these - a Command Squad for the Castigators (an Apothecary would perhaps be useful, along with an opportunity to explore what a Castigators librarian looks like...) And of course, a Castigators Standard Bearer would be nice.

More to come...

Click.  Page down, page down, page down, page down, page dow-oh God, it sees me!

Looks like Killer Croc with Shingles, crammed into a suit of Power Armor.  Which is kinda cool, but something that ugly should have a disclaimer on it :P

Argent aquila, : Thanks very much!

Squeaky / : I'm unsure about Caetrus - it'd likely have to be a sculpted face.

Candleshoes: Really very good to hear from you - I look forward to seeing more from your Brazen Claws.

Midian: Thanks mate - I need to get in touch with you regarding these and the Deathwatch. I look forward to hearing from you.

Firepower: Hah, he does have a face for radio, doesn't he?

Nineswords: I envisage my booklet as something more akin to the Insignium Astartes than a true, full-on Warhammer 40,000 codex. That said, I will be seeing whether I can conjure up rules for the various systems (such as the Deathwatch RPG, for example). Also, here is Brother Heinrich's dreadnought.

Oh man that's... awesome.

So, I made an ill-advised purchase and got myself Forgeworld's Abaddon versus Loken diorama, along with Web Exclusive Captain 2. Both will comprise my Captain, Anteas. Cue disappointing paint mash-up of how I'm envisaging him:

Of course, I wish I could get hold of the Strikeforce Ultra terminator captain, but I will probably have to make do with the generic power sword arm from the Terminator Sergeant.

Also, after a previous discussion with someone else, I promised I'd gather together what Castigators artwork I could find to help people envision the Chapter. Here goes:

Bolter of the Castigators Chapter

Edited by Commissar Molotov

I've had the images of Karakella and Rhetoricus seared into my mind ever since first stumbling onto the Castigators.   All those years later, I still look at them and think to myself that whatever goes up against that is going to have a very short, very painful, remainder of their "natural" lifespan, haha.

Captain Malus of the Ninth - by Captain Tiberius

This piece, right here, is what I stumbled upon while dinking around the web many years ago, which led to me finding and joining the Bolter and Chainsword.

It's all your fault, Molotov.  :tongue.:

If there is anything I can do to help this project along, just say the word. It would be an honour.

EDIT: Dibs on the Captain of the Tenth company! I gots me an evil plan.....

Edited by Hyaenidae

Thank you both for your comments. I'm really pleased the Castigators have somehow managed to evoke such a reaction from people across the B+C. I feel they're showing their age a little bit nowadays, and definitely want to polish up their background as I develop it further for the endpoint of this project. Of course, it would never have gotten this far without many B+C luminaries - some long gone from these parts, and others simply with new names! However, I do intend to pay tribute to you all.

It's definitely worth checking out This thread by The Fabricator General which showcases his fourth company Castigators force - to my knowledge, Fab-Gen has the accolade for having the only complete Castigators army in the world! This is clearly something I need to remedy. (His WIP thread includes some other figures - JackDaw, can we nag Duncan to get some pics up?)

I also managed to find these sketches that are worth throwing onto the pile - all drawn by Avelardo Paredes:

Hope these are of interest!

Hopefully, my next update will include actual models, as I gather together what true-scale bits I have from my Deathwatch project and begin to piece together Captain Anteas of the Fifth.

Thanks, all!

Mol

I've just looked at the Fabricator General's attempts, and now I hope you have been practising with a brush recently!

This should be such a rewarding experience for you, and I will be happy to hear about all of the extra details and fluff which will make your project extra special for all of us. The stage is now yours!

I'm very excited to see you make some true-scale Castigators marines.  I remember seeing some of this art during my earliest visits to the B&C many years ago.  I would like to offer you my full assistance, resources and hobby skills in this endeavor.  With your permission I'll send you a pm with further details at your leisure.  I would like to make one suggestion now if you don't mind.  I've been studying the different pieces of art that you've posted thus far trying to match existing GW and FW kits to each marine.  I noticed that Abaddon's torso armor bears a close resemblance to that of Senior Sergeant Caetrus, especially once you've removed the thrice cursed Eye of Horus from it in your mock-up of Captain Anteas.

So, with it being the weekend I was able to make a little bit of progress. Forgeworld and eBay came through and I had both of the models I wanted ready.

Here's the first stab at Captain Anteas:

http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/INQ28/Anteas5_zpsd70b12f2.png

http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/INQ28/Anteas6_zps20287eb3.png

As you can see, he's primarily the Forgeworld Abaddon, with the back of his torso sawn away and replaced with the cloak from one of the web-exclusive Captains. I've had to saw the cloak in half, but I'm pretty pleased that I've done it in a way that should be pretty easily repaired. The arm in this case is taken from my Deathwatch Lamenter, and is just a placeholder to give a sense of where I'm going with him. The base rubble is taken from the Finecast Marneus Calgar; I tried using the base that Abaddon originally comes with but I just didn't like it.

So, to do:

  • Decide on a head for him
  • Decide on weaponry (power sword/chainsword? bolt pistol/plasma pistol?)
  • Decide on a pose - here I have a lot of leeway at the moment. Which arm to have raised? What sort of pose to have him in?
  • Finish removing the SoH detailing
  • Repair the damage to the cloak and add plasticard to the back of his armour collar.

Any suggestions are gratefully received. I envisage him as a relatively young and dynamic Captain. I hope you like how he's turning out!

Have you considered heating up the resin to bend the legs into something that better resembles a walking pose? That's my go-to pose for commanders, as it looks very ominous.

I would very much like to second this idea. Antaeus is off to a great start.

A number of modellers have mentioned using hot water or hair dryers to make forge world resin malleable. I think I would need to see a video before I could trust myself - and even then, Abaddon is not the one I would try it on, after I've spent that much getting him!

I'm happy with the legs and the rock, which help distinguish him as a commander. I'm talking about arms and head. Which weapon in which hand? Which sword to use? Which pistol (or do I give him a shield?) Which arm raised or lowered? Which direction should he be looking?

I'd love to weigh in regarding the head, although I think we need a bit more information in order to be able to help:

- do you want a helmeted or bare head or would you be open to either option?

- is he a relatively young commander or a grizzled veteran?

- is he an angry guy or someone who keeps his cool?

- are any heads out of the question because you hate a certain hairstyle, don't like rebreathers or what have you?

Based on those factors, I'll glady make a suggestion  Regarding the pose, I think it really works pretty well as is. For the other arm, my gut feeling says: either go with a pointy hand and an "I am coming for you!" look or give him a suitably ornate pistol or bolter held at the same angle as the sword (I'm just a sucker for the retro "show your weapons" look ;) ).
