I've mentioned before the excellent work done by MonkeyBallistic; his true-scale Iron Hands are excellent:

I got in touch with him and he agreed to send me a couple of torsos:

I was intrigued with how he's used Grey Knight armour to evoke power armour. The use of the backpiece of a tactical torso is an interesting idea, too.

I immediately wanted to try the pieces out to see what I could do with them.

These are heavily blue-tacked, and with no effort to neaten the join between torso and legs, but they definitely show the potential, whcih I'm pleased with.

I've also blue-tacked this together, in an effort to emulate a model of Apologist's that I've always liked:

Cor, looking great – I really like your version of the marine with the bare head and the grille. The ever-excellent MonkeyBallistic's torso really puts my putty-pushing to shame, and your posing looks more threatening than mine, I think.

Several months since my last update. I got frustrated that Captain Anteas hadn't gone in a direction I liked, and left him to the side for a long time. But I was reading through Codex Imperialis and was confronted by an illustration that I hadn't seen in years - but that I had always loved.

This made me think that I could use the rock outcropping in a different way. Rather than moving up, I imagined him descending down. I wanted him looking down. In my true-scaled forces, I wanted a model slightly taller, and imagined him marshalling his forces, rallying the Castigators to war.

My first step was to take the Abaddon figure and saw the legs apart in order to make a more fluid figure. I ended up sawing both the hips, removing both feet and replacing them from another cataphractii figure, and sawing one leg in half at the knee. Three pins and two green-stuffed joints has helped the legs to look a little more natural.

The head is only a placeholder. I intend Anteas to be far more noble, and have two heads that could work - Lufgt Huron's, and Garviel Loken's. Equally, the sword would be replaced (there is play in both the shoulder and wrist to alter the pose) and the storm bolter will be replaced for a pistol of some kind. The backpack banner needs a little bit of work, the tabard at the waist needs green-stuffing, and I need to repair the legs where I sawed them.

I would definitely like to hear your feedback on this guy, through I certainly think I've made progress.

I think something to try is to emulate the picture a bit more - have the model face to the right while the head looks forward. And maybe bring the left arm (well, his right arm) down like in the picture. Maybe that'd give more of a vibe that you're looking for. That's my suggestion, at least. :)

This thread has suffered from the Photobucket Purge (perhaps not a bad thing, as I'd never quite got far enough with these guys...) but I have some news!

Today I received a delivery from Shapeways, from the excellent Plokoone!

Here you can see a set of power-armoured Castigators pads, alongside a set of true-scaled pads! These are excellent quality, and fit fantastically on my truescale Deathwatch:

It's always a pain to get a decent photograph of these 3D-printed pieces, but hopefully you can make out how well they fit. Finally, a Castigators army is within my sights!

I've also picked up a set of true-scaled Tactical pads. My aim is to produce a Castigators tactical squad. As a lot of my games are skirmish-based, I'll never be the person with ten thousand points of Space Marines. But the chance to bring the Castigators to life is too exciting.

Now, I have an offer in mind - at the moment I have thirty Castigators power armour pads that I don't have huge amounts of use for (though I'll be converting a few Primaris to see what can be done with them.) If you're interested in creating a Castigator marine, I will happily send you a pad for free - as part of my eventual plans for the Chapter I'd like to create a Chapter gallery, populated with amazing models!

Thanks for the interest, guys!

I currently have expressions of interest from 7 modellers:

  • Olis
  • Dosjetka
  • Krautscientist
  • Apologist
  • Ferrus Manus
  • Tyrranicide
  • Marshal Rohr

I'm sending the first pads out tomorrow morning and have sent out requests for addresses - if you can send them to me, I'll get them out to you straight away!

In the meantime, my longterm hobby collaborator PDH has sent me the following pictures of a Castigator Deathwatch marine converted from a Primaris marine!

I would love to add a Castigator to my Deathwatch :D one of the first DIY Chapters I came across when I joined the B&C!

(Holy crap I just checked my profile I joined B&C 10 years ago this year!)

Hi all, thanks for the emails and messages. I will be posting these out over the next week - hit a slight snag but they should be with you soon!

In the meantime, pictures of my first Castigator; I got a few Primaris Marines off eBay cheaply and wanted to see how they scaled against my true-scale Marines:

The shoulderpads (this is one of Plokoone's) fit really nicely and don't look out of place; this makes a Castigator force so much easier! The Primaris are also much bigger than I expected. They don't look out of place alongside my truescales (it's hard to pick them out) and whilst they're not perfect (for me their chests are a little narrow) I think they're a big improvement on the Astartes!
