1st Game with wolves vs Guard

So I have my first game of the year and EVER with my wolves on monday. I'm playing a friend at my local club who plays imperial guard.

Now i've played him a few times with my vanilla marines, won some, lost some. Just thought i'd hit a post up here to see if you guys had any tips when using wolves against them with regards to "must haves" in my army list.

I imagine it's going to be 1500pts as thats our standard and i KNOW he will be taking his usual unit of 3 dirty spam tanks with plasma and battlecannons.

 

I know once i get into combat with any of his troops he is dead, theyre very obliging in the way they like to run away and get run down, but obviously they have a lot of fire power.

Meltas, lots of meltas! And powerfists and drop pods, get in amongst his army so blast weapons become just as dangerous for him as you. Last time I played IG I dropped some melta GHs and my mate shot two of his own chimeras trying to hit the GHs, blew them both up and killed most of the guards in them. I did chuckle hard that day, He did not.

OK so Herr is the draft.

 

HQ.

Wolf lord on mount with 2 wolves - black death, runic.

 

Elites.

Wolf guard, 5 men inc 1 as wgpl. 2 th and ss, 2 pair of claw and one with frost sword and storm bolter. All with melts bombs.

 

Wolf scouts, 6 men, 5 sniper and 1 heavy bolter.

 

Troops.

Blood claw 15 men inc wgpl who has dual wolf claws. Includes and melta and flamer. All in a stormgrr.

 

Grey hunters, 10 men, pack leader with claw. 2 x plasma. In a drop pod.

 

HS.

2 whirlwinds

 

1494.

 

....... Feel free to rip into that. I am new with the Wolfie's. Working with what I have and never been good with list building lol.

 

Should I take anything else instead of something? I have termies available. Or speeders. Land raiders. Dreads.

The result?

 

Three major issues. First, scouts are as useless as they get against IG, who either have T3 en mass or AV.

Second, the WG pack. What is their purpose? Are they on foot? They need a transport.

Thirdly, why is the Lord solo? He won't make it past the midfield.

I am also not sold the Claw on the WGPL. Rest is decent enough ;)

Sorry I forgot the wolf guard are in a razorback with lasconnon.

 

Dunno why the lord is solo...ran out of points? Lol. Take the scouts out and sub in speeders or something?

i took the scouts out and put 2 speeders in.

the rest was the same. although i added a couple of wolves with my lord as i had spare points.

got to turn 5.

turn 2 my stormwolf loaded with claws came in, it didn't hit with its twin las, 2 x twin melta and twin hellfrost.. wow, then turn 3 i thought, he's bound to hit this time, only one melta hit and didnt pen with both dice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! im gonna burn it!!

but it was a close game, my wolf lord joined the wolf guard once they disembarked on turn 2. moved forward. turn 3 is when it all happened. his tank and gun range tore some of my grey hunters. my whirlwinds hit well and destroyed 2 of his blob infantry units.

so turn 3, charged into another large unit with lord and wolf guard, destroyed 20 men in the first assault phase smile.png love it. blood claws disembarked from the flying useless pile of .... took out his warlord and unit.

however on his turn 3 the tanks (which had all their HP's due to the stormgrr doing naff all) decimated my lord and his whole unit of wolves and wolf guard. then turn 4 my claws (2x melta gun and a power fist) attempted to hurt his tanks and failed, then were then also evaporated by cannon fire.

turn 5 i called it as i had only 2 whirlwinds and 2 grey hunters hiding behind a ruin.

sad times but good fun.

overall if the stormgrr did its blooming job his tanks (unit of 3) should have been down to a single tank by the end of my shooting in turn 3.

Yea, I would concentrate on his tanks, the infantry will fall over when looked at funny, just get some claws to deal with them (I love sky claws for this. I have killed a 35 strong squad of termigants in one turn with 5 sky claws and a wolf priest before, for massed infantry they rule!).

 

Also personaly I would have taken the Lord off his mount and put him with a unit, or if you really wana run him as on his mount I would find a way to put some TWC on the board, really make them a threat.

i do plan on expanding a lot more still. as ive only been doing wolves since very recently im still in the development phase of things. not got a lot but a good amount. definately want the option to field TWC. and perhaps the dreads. i do still have my old vanilla marines which is handy for allies to give me the option of raven / talon, centurions etc smile.png
It's a slog getting everything ready but you will get there. Im still trying to get my army to a standard where Im happy with everything. I keep buying models I like insted of what will be useful!haha. Recently splashed out on a knight Titan, it's awesome beond what I expected, but I can't get into a list that is less than 1850 without making my list lacking it some area!lol.
