warsmith
Hey allProbably a question that's been asked countless times, checked the search engine but no luck, so I'll ask anyway. I know you can use oil washes (after a gloss coat) on vehicles and larger models and such but I'm wondering if it works on power armoured marines and infantry, and if so any special considerations? Thanks in advance,Dan Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301424-oil-washes-on-marine/ Share on other sites
JeffTibbetts
I've not done it so I shouldn't answer... But nobody else has yet. I've seen it done a number of times. Seems to work best for grimy marines, but it's hard to even tell the difference for the viewer if done well. A lot of the same benefits apply, as you can add and take it away without disturbing the underlying work. It would be a lot more work on infantry than on a tank, though. What did you have in mind, anyway? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301424-oil-washes-on-marine/#findComment-3908652 Share on other sites
Firepower
I did it for my Broken Arrows, and the link to the blog is in my sig. They're rather beaten up, but for the sake of reference, they were solid shades of brown before oil washes filled in all he crevices. It works very well for pin-point washing, when you just dab the brush on and let the wash flow into the nooks and crannies. You can do a sloppier wash that covers the whole model, but for that you're better off using a satin wash rather than a gloss. You can find a good number of tutorials on youtube. Surprisingly enough, I've rarely seen this done on vehicles. I've almost always seen it done on infantry  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301424-oil-washes-on-marine/#findComment-3908713 Share on other sites
warsmith
Thanks for the response Jeff,I'm trying to work out a nice simple scheme for a fists army, tried a few test pieces but they keep ending up with a muddy appearance no matter how much I water down the brown for the shading. I'm hoping that using an oil wash might work better as I should be able to clean it up afterwards, its just not womething that I've every seen done on an infantry model. Grotsmasha
Fists, as in Imperial? Have you tried the wash over a white primer before colour? HERE's one I did a few months back. Slips
Thanks for that Jono, I just bought some Lamenters Yellow and was thinking about how to use it to paint a large amount of Imperial Fists :p Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301424-oil-washes-on-marine/#findComment-3908831 Share on other sites
Marshal Rohr
Oil applied with a q-tip to the crown of each model part can be flooded with alcohol to give yellow a more natural shade.
