Some tank help please

Ok, so I don't know if this is the best place to ask as I'm not working off a standard Astra Militarium list but I figured you guys may have more knowledge. I am dedicating this year to building a Solar Auxilia army, for which I have a large amount of resin already, enough to fill out my initial troop selection of around 70 men. And I'm writing a rough list, less an army list and more a shopping list.

Now I have got to the section that says Auxilia Leman Russ Strike Squadron, and apart from wanting 2, 3 tank squadrons, I have no idea what to pick. So I was wondering what are the best options when it comes to the workhorse of the Imperial Army. My choices are;

Standard battle tank

Exterminator

Annihilator

Vanquisher.

From the extra options I cant take sponsons, but I can swap the heavy bolter for a multi laser, heavy flamer or lascannon.

Similiary in the heavy support section I would like to take a Leman Russ Assault Squadron. My choices here are the

Demolisher

Incinerator

Executioner

Same deal with sponsons and heavy bolter upgrades.

I definitely want an Incnerator here, and I'm guessing that might be a little known variant here as its a Heresy thing (mmm....Volkite).

So I kind of want to know, what does what, what's cool, where should I spend my money. For other armour I am thinking of getting either bombards or basilisks, and a Valdor Tank hunter. Oh and probally a thunderbolt for air support.

Honestly without points values I can't help you much, and well, sharing points values is frowned upon. If this is solely an army that will be playing against other Heresy armies, I'd recommend popping over to the HH section and asking them for tips. Most people there will probably have a copy of HH:IV, and they'll be able to help you with the nuance of the game and what works well in it.

Coffee is right, while we are all about the Guard here the Solar Auxila are part of the HH game so work a bit differently and more importantly within a different game. You will probably be better off asking them, if you would like I can move your topic to the 30k section? There's nothing stopping you returning here to show off your models though ;)

I will move the topic for you but leave a tag behind here for people to follow if they want. Even if there's not many SA players yet your potential opponents should know what scares them msn-wink.gif

From a Guard point of view - and there's no reason to think this won't be mostly the same in 30k - the standard Russ is versatile but nothing special. It reliably deals with most opponents well enough short of the heaviest of armour but works best in number in my opinion. If you're going for fewer tanks, or already have a standard Russ complement, then specialists are the way to go to complement the rest of your force.

So it comes down to what you need in your list. Heavy armour is always useful, even more so in number thanks to saturation so it's just a matter of picking the right guns. The Incinerator's shiny is good enough reason to pick if you want it smile.png The Demolisher may be short ranged but packs a hell of a punch, dangerous and a bit a fire magnet - nasty in pairs supporting each other.

The Executioner will plasma pop heavy infantry for you which will likely be quite useful in the Marine crowded 30th Millennium. Exterminator is nice but may be a bit weedy for the hyped up HH, and the Vanquisher has a great gun but struggles with being BS3. Hopefully that helps arm you with the basics so you can get stuck in, don't forget you can always come back here for more bits such as some tactical advice (always run tanks with infantry escorts to protect them) and show off your models biggrin.png

In my opinion I don't think the Leman Russ Incinerator is that useful. It can do ten wounds at most but if you're fighting in HH games vs marines for the majority of the time, then you don't ignore their armour and it's strength 7 when strength 6 is good enough just to wound on 2s. It's not that very good at anti tank either, so whilst it looks cool and I to personally would love to have one I just don't think it fulfils it's role very well, it's also BS3 to unless it's upgraded. I like the other two tanks over it for killing power.

The first lot of leman russ's can outflank to so I'd be tempted to go for a Leman Russ exterminator so that you could possibly take advantage of weaker side and rear armour and with 4 shots being twin linked you can compensate for the lower BS.

in case they can outflank i'dd definetly go for a standard leman russ. it will ruin space marines their day in 40k and i'm pretty sure it will do so in 30K as well. it also allows you to come in from their flank, pick off a bundles up heavy support unit and clear out their deployment zone, forcing them to either come back to you or keep pushing forward.

Just think of those large squads of Marines and what your battle cannon could do ;) Never forget the Rule of Cool is the most powerful in 40k and that applies to your own models too

Outflanking Russes seems a bit cruel, I guess that's where Creed got it from...

The problem with Executioners is that for the cost of 3 Executioners (600) you can pick up an allied force of Legiones, with a Centurion, 10 Man Bolter Squad and 3 Predator Executioners with Heavy Bolter sponsons (590). That is another scoring unit with either T5 vs shooting or bs5 fury of the legion, and 18 heavy bolter shots, and always has bs4, in return for dropping av14 to 13.

Battlecannons are ace, however. With the exception of Iron Hands which require the niche of a Basilisk (about the only use for onexin 7th edition), you double out t4 and at ap3, so Apothecaries are wasted. The volkite suffers from lacking ignores cover and either rending or increased ap in the marine centric 30k meta, while its expense against 40k armies (compare a monolith to a SA LR Incinerator) means it is not points effective, even against horde armies.

Mathhammer always blows my mind and makes me realize I'm so out of touch with the competitive aspect of the game. Somewhere in between fluff and crunch is where I live.
