Models for Veterans

Hello,

It is really shameful that GW has not produced any real kit for IG Veterans lately (both a standalone and an upgrade kits would do!). This is especially annoying since almost every list includes at least a Vet squad.

I was curious to hear what models you use as Veterans. Posting pics would be a great bonus.

My idea, at the moment, is rather expensive. Perhaps somebody tried something similar and can provide some suggestion: I was thinking to use modified Forgeworld Elysians. In my case, 1 command squad (5 men) + 1 special weapon squad (6 men, 3 meltas in my case) would do, and also allow to have an extra guy to swap a special weapon. The fact is, I like Elysian bodies but not their heads: thus I plan to use the beret heads from the Militarum tempestus kits, as they are extra (I assembled all my Scions with masks). The result should be something near Green Berets, which should be both recognisable on the field and appropriately looking. The downside are the frightening Forgeworld prices! Also, I *assume* this combination would look fine! as I have not actually tried it in practice.

My cheaper alternative would be using Catachan models, but the models are a bit aged and look rather clumsy and squattish...even worse than plastic Cadians.

Any suggestion, thoughts, etc.? Post your Veterans please!

Veterans are a perfect chance to kitbash, mix up Cadian and Catchan trooper parts, with items from the Tempestus Scions, Space Msrine scouts (Sniper parts are v. useful) and even raid some of the fantasy lines likr the Empire Militia.

The most straight forward starting plsce would be to get the Beret heads from the Tempestus Scions sprue, and apply to Cadian bodies. At worst, you're buying both sets ccompplete but plenty of bits sites exist.

Hello,

It is really shameful that GW has not produced any real kit for IG Veterans lately (both a standalone and an upgrade kits would do!).

This sounds very similar to some of the recent comments on the Adepta Sororitas forum in their "You know you're a Sisters of Battle player when ..." thread.

I use Cadian basic troops, catachans for vets and cadians with light grey helmets for conscripts.

Bah, Veterans who needs them...in my army anyone who survives long enough (usually a battle or two) gets promoted to Grenadier or Watchmaster before moving on to the officer ranks if they live that long. Even in my not-Krieg Guard army I cannot justify the extra cost; BS3 is more than sufficient if it means saving 10 points. For the same price you 20% more martyrs for the Emperor, 20% more faceless drones to choke your enemy with, 20% more that you enemy must kill. Excepting Heavy Mortars and Siege Carriages, I generally consider 100 points an overly expensive unit. Plentiful, cheap, disposable: that is what the Guard means to me.

Jests aside I never use veterans so here's a picture of my Veterans:

The easiest way to do Veterans is either the above post that mentions kit bashing, or to just use a different regiment's models. Using Cadians, then instead any of the metal, resin, or Catachan models work. This is a great way to justify buying Forgeworld Guard without starting a Forgeworld Guard list, although it could easily become that. You could also just paint them differently. Perhaps your army has black and charcoal paint scheme with white helmets for Conscripts, you could give the Veterans red helmets, or shoulder pads instead of helmets, or even just an alternate shoulder pad design. Not adding any of the canteens, pouches, grenades, etc to the normal guys and saving all of those bits for the Veterans is another thing I have seen done.

As above writers has mentioned already. Kit bash.

Basic kit bash for Cadian players would be the command box, and the same goes for the Catachans. In those command boxes there are alternate heads, poses, torsos, etc.

Another source for bits is the Tempestus scions, they come with a huge amount of bits. The 5 scions models you get can't possibly add all the bits. Further more there are over 18 heads included! for just 5 models.

I used Catachan command, Cadian command, Tempestus scions, and some fantasy battle mercenaries for my veterans.

These veterans are made from all the kits. Adding various heads, arms from mercenaries and catachans, etc. Adding backpacks to give an image that they are packing some personal "not standard items". Scopes on the lasguns and such.

This is my other veteran squad. Didn't put much effort into it, as my inspiration fell a lot.

But a simple headswap, adding scopes and backpacks.

Hope it helps!

What Vash says.... After all I stole his ideas for mixing Cadian and Scion bits :)

Another option is to vary the paint scheme to make them stand out as special troops or use different heads such as berets or jungle hats available from 3rd party stores.

Many nails are being struck true here! You can do whatever you like with Vets, from just a different paint scheme to adding extra bits or kit bashing - even completely different models! There's no rule on how they must appear but most people use it as an opportunity to create something a bit different to your normal trooper. As for my Vets, here's a squad I did recently kit bashed from the Cadian and Catachan CCS and a bit of Forge World:

~shrug~  I see no reason why the average trooper in a veteran squad should look markedly different from the average trooper in an infantry squad.  My infantry are all old metal cadians, and I use the same set of models regardless of how I field them.  I do have a few mods, like the catachan demo charge bearer with the mohawk who has been bashed to carry a flamer, but by and large, a uniform is a uniform.  If anything, being better disciplined, veterans should wear the same uniform...less sloppily.  So...gloss black boots for vets, flat black boots for conscripts?  LOL

I'm glad you liked it, modelled after my very own tea mug biggrin.png

march has a good point, you don't have to gear them up just because the standard background has them so. For your regiment the veteran squads or improved stats could be related to anything you want so if you liked there could be no difference at all between regular troops and veterans!
