Airbrush paint scratching off?

Recommended Posts

I have the same problem sometimes. I've noticed it's more likely to happen when I hold the brush too far away. I think the paint is drying before it hits the model in its finely atomized state. Maybe check your technique and see if you're blasting too hard, from too far. Try a lower pressure, closer to the model. Could also be how you're thinning the paint?

hmmm, I primed some Chaos Space Marines with the airbrush last night, same primer and it worked great, no issues and can't scratch it off. Must be how I was painting then. I'll let you know when I start the base coats biggrin.png

That's really good news, then! Let me know how you get on with the rest.

^Please elaborate. And by elaborate, I mean belabor the point until my newbish brain understands this sorcery of which you speak.

Very new to airbrushing as in the kit is still in the box and I hide from it. I've got a fear of seriously :cussing up.

The first thing to do is wash the plastic. This doesn't always have to be done but if you have handled it a lot the oil from your hands could be on it. Next let the water dry completely. Then make sure the primer is shaken very well. This means generally putting a glass bead or ball bearing into the bottle. I also roll the bottles between my hands to help get all the pigment off the bottom. Then the first coat of primer I spray very thin to the point you can still see grey thru it mostly. I give that 24 hrs to dry then come back and do a heavier coat but not so heavy that it will look completely black. Keep some sprue that is still bare plastic to compare to as the correct amount of coating will look grey while you are spraying without it.

I'll take your advice on finding a different primer. I did lower the pressure and spray closer, it helped. Something interesting, I through YouTube comment heard that Vj Game Colour paints are a big no no for airbrushing due to them having some heavy metal, begins with 'c'. I don't want lung problems down the track, anybody know if there is truth to this?

You mean cadmium or cobalt? That may be a possibility in some colors (cadmium is usually reds, yellows and oranges, cobalt is some blues and greens).

Vallejo also have the Game Air line of paints that are designed to be run through an airbrush and are pre-thinned for that task. I've recently tried the Sombre Grey and Wolf Grey and have been pleased with those.

Yeah, that is an ingredient in certain colors, and to my knowledge all of the bottles are clearly marked with a warning label.  I don't think any of the Model Air colors have it, or at least it wouldn't make much sense if they did.

Sadly, Model Air seems to be a Europe-only product line.  Of course you can order it in America, but you'll never dodge the international shipping. :P

Then again I can't remember what happened the last time I looked for it on Amazon.
