Hellios
http://ichef.bbci.co.uk/naturelibrary/images/ic/credit/640x395/v/ve/vespula_vulgaris/vespula_vulgaris_1.jpg The address above should take you to a picture of a wasp. Any ideas on what paints would get me to that yellow? Any general tips on yellow are welcome as well, but I've already looked at some yellow tutorials. Thanks for your time. God-Potato of Mankind
I'd suggest some yellow paint to start. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301955-any-ideas-on-how-to-a-smooth-wasp-yellow/#findComment-3919223 Share on other sites
Teetengee
Is this good enough? If so, I used chaos black primer, skull white, and then two or three layers of sunburst yellow. In modern paints you should be able to use white scar (or balor brown actually) then two to three layers of flash gitz yellow. Although the picture you posed is a little warmer orange, so I would try using Yriel Yellow instead. So, my suggestion is you use a white or light to brown base coat (as they cover the primer better but easily accept a yellow over them) and then use Yriel Yellow in a couple layers over it. Make sure to use it thinned though. I would suggest the brown over the white as I imagine it will help to create that richer warmer yellow. JeffTibbetts
My Queen Bee will be half yellow like that. Averland Sunset to start for the base, obviously (since it covers so well, and it's a nice golden yellow as opposed to a lemony yellow), I think I'm going to shade with Seraphim Sepia (you could use Cassandora Yellow for less contrast), then layer Yriel Yellow and highlight with Dorn Yellow edge paint and maybe all the way up to white in some spots. If you want more vibrancy, maybe add a Lamenter's yellow glaze on top. It sort of depends how much contrast and drama you want. You could just do Averland base, wash with Sepia, and then use a little Yriel for an edge highlight if you want an easier/darker look. The big thing to remember is that with a wasp, it's actually a browner/golden yellow as opposed to a bright/pale yellow. Am I making sense? Hellios
Thanks for the replies guys. I've done yellow before, but I haven't been able to get this shade right. What you say makes sense, Jeff. I need to buy some paints to test these ideas out... And I'll do a few test models before I ruin the 120 models that I'm prepping at the moment. I might beat you to it. I've already got the Iyanden down on my knight's armor plates. Follow my Queen Bee log over the next couple weeks if you want to see this recipe in action. :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301955-any-ideas-on-how-to-a-smooth-wasp-yellow/#findComment-3919550 Share on other sites
Rik Lightstar
Rather than using a white to make your highlight tones, try using a cream tone like the old bleached bone, that keeps it much warmer in tone.
