A Worthy Saga

Recommended Posts

Recently I played against Tyranids for the first time. Safe to say that charging the Swarmlord was a gloriously brave and stupid idea. That thing is a close combat monster. And so now back at the Fang, licking my wounds, I want revenge.

A truly great saga would be beating that monster in close combat, the question is how?

My initial plan is a Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf with a storm shield and the armour of Russ. If we can have more than one relic, then the Fangsword and the helm of Durfast would also be very useful.

what are your thoughts?

I regularly play against Nids, and so far I haven't found a cost effective way to take down the Swarmlord. Last time I managed it I spent between 600 and 700 points of termies doing it.

Fistly, it depends how many tyrant guard he has, the Nid player in my group always uses 3, which is 9 extra wounds to take before you can take wounds off of him, some helfrost shooting may help thin this barrier before getting him into combat. The instant death on his Bone sabres can make mincemeat of your Lord if you fail a 3++, (I don't think regular wolf lords have eternal warrior, although I may be wrong)

How about Rune priest on a bike, with Armour of Russ and Iron Arm, (I know you need to get lucky to get this) with Force activated, (Is Swarmlord eternal warrior?? Im Not sure) With a Force sword, which will ignore his armour and force his 4++ invuln

Im just spitballing here...

Just an FYI - you can take more than one relic, just not more than one of each relic in an army. So you could, if you had the points and inclination, loadup a Wolf Lord with Armour of Russ, Fangsword of the Ice Wolf and Helm of Durfast if you really wanted.

Thats how Space Marine players can run Chapter Masters with Shield Eternal and "whatever-the-other-relic-they-take-is-called"

Also, Helfrost may work as that removes models from the table but Swarmlord would need to fail a strength test... so 6s only for him I think?

are tyrant guard only 3+?

in that case missle long fangs or land speeders with missles are your friend. Im presuming they are over T4 so no instakill, but still, a couple rounds of good shooting should remove the guard from him.

That would then leave him open to a TWC charge, have a hidden thunder hammer in the TWC unit, and use the lord to take the challenge and hope he doesnt get instakilled?

Or a stormwolf full of combi-plasma termies?

Rhino dropping off a grey hunter unit putting out 6 plasma shots to soften him up before a charge from something else?

Dont have swarmlord stats to hand so just spitballing biggrin.png

Swarmlords are generally considered pretty garbage for a good reason. They're slow, and useless out of close combat. Don't try and melee it, shoot it. Or just move away from it and ignore it. Being a valorous warrior does not mean you ignore tactics and charge at whatever is closest.

Played against a Swarmlord this past sunday, tied him with thunderwolves (3 with storm shield, though i've challenged with the pack leader and he's been lucky with saves) until Logan barged in with the chariot and crashed the party.

Didn't find it to be too hard, but i've been lucky i guess. Logan alone decimated the tyranids, only the end of the game stopped him
