Saga of the Iron Wolf...

... well, not really, but still a very interesting approach.

If you are so disposed to using FW with your Wolves, then here is a possible tactic:

-Take Ulrik as your HQ and three Iron Priests, each with full compliment of Servitors/Thralls, as your Mandatory Elites in a Champions of Fenris Detachment.

-Take 3 x Spartan Assault Tanks, all with the Ceramite Armor upgrade (to prevent death by melta) and a SB upgrade (to give you another weapon to lose for a Weapon Destroyed result).

-Put one Iron Priest/Servitor squad in each Spartan and then put Ulrik in the middle one. As long as you keep all three tanks within 6" of Ulrik (in the middle Spartan), then everyone gets Preferred Enemy. This means you get 12 Lascannon shots a turn, all TLed and all with re-rolls to Wound of 1s from PE. On average this should kill an entire squad (or two) of Power Armored troops each shooting phase or wipe out 1-2 MCs a turn, or even kill a Centurion squad each turn. Alternately, with POTMS, they can split their fire up among up to 6 different enemy vehicles a turn, potentially killing multiple threats each shooting phase if you are up against a mechanized opponent.

-Survivability-wise, with Ceramite Plating (so only one D6 for melta weapons), the only things that can get penetrating hits on the Spartans are Haywire/Lance attacks and weapons with S9/S10, which are generally pretty rare (unless you are playing Dakr Eldar, fo course). Given that each Spartan has 5 HPs, AV14 all-around, and is carrying an Iron Priest that can basically auto-repair a HP or damage result (due to Servitors), it is also exceptionally difficult to glance the Spartans to death. Combine this with the fact that Spartans are now scoring (like pretty much everything in 7th edition) and that they can move up to 18" a turn if required (12" move +6" Flat Out), and you can seize/hold objectives relatively succesfully as well. Since Spartans are immune to S7 and below shooting (looking at you, Wave Serpents and Missilesides), this means that they can simply ignore a large proportion of threats in the game.

-Points-wise, this entire set-up costs just under 1400 points, meaning you can still get a good assault based unit (like TWC and a Wolf Lord to lead them) or you could go for a couple of Stormwolves to provide solid gunship support/anti-air shooting, which is one of this list's weaknesses.

That actually sounds pretty good. Too bad that the only vehicles I own are three pods and a Sicaran, or I'd totally try it. My only concerns are Wraithknights S10, Centurions (Immobilizing them) and S10 in melee. But outside of that, legit.

Well, capping prowess is fairly low, so beware of that as well.

Good points there Immerstum. Regarding WraithKnights and Centurions, they would definitely be priority target number one for your shooting.

On average, all 3 Spartans shooting at the same Centurion squad, you have 12 Lascannon shots, 10.66 hits, 10.37 wounds, and 10.37 unsaved wounds (unless the Centurions have a cover save of some sort). In turn, that means on average that you kill 5 Centurions per shooting phase, all at 48" range, so you should be able to eliminate them pretty quickly. Also, if they immobilize you, then the Iron Priests/Thralls can repair that result.

Same goes for Wraithknights. 12 Lacannon shots, 10.66 hits, 8.29 wounds, and 5.52 unsaved wounds inflicted after the Invul Save is taken into account... throw in a little extra shootign (say from a friendly Stormwolf) and you should be able to kill one Wraithknight a turn, on average.
