silver skulls painting advice needed (pics included)

Hey guys

I am a bit of a newbie painter and I am starting a Silver Skulls army and I have been doing some reading and thinking about my paint scheme.

This is what I have so far:

- Primed black

- A light layer of valejo gunmetal

- drybrush of necron compound

This has resulted in the pictures below. I think the colours are perhaps a little dark, I don't know if they would benefit from a wash, perhaps drakenhof nightshade to give a bit more depth, or whether I should drybrush more necron compound to lighten them up a bit. I am a bit unsure of what to do next and would really appreciate some advice on getting a good metallic scheme which I can reproduce (I've only been painting a short while!)

I know that things will improve once I pick out some other details with other colours, I just want to make sure I am getting a good base colour.

Apologies for the not-so-great picture!

all advice and tips would be most most welcome!

In my opinion your base color is dark. Gunmetal is a very dark finish in general. If that's what you're shooting for I think it's fine, but it sounds like you want to lighten it up and according to most of what I've seen about SS, they're much lighter. It's your army and you can do what you want, but if you're trying to lighten I'd do a couple things.

First, use a much lighter base color. In the GW range I'd say Ironbreaker, maybe. Then you can use a wash to darken the recesses. Up to which one, but lots of Grey Knights players use Drakenhoff Nightshade to give it a blue tinge. You could also go with Nuln Oil for a plain black, or even something like Agrax Earthshade for some interesting pre-weathering. At any rate, your drybrushed highlights won't look so stark if you're starting with a brighter base.

Adding more drybrush can make them look overly dramatic if you're still using the really dark base like right now. It could end up looking more like wear than lighting.

Thanks for the reply, I am not really sure of what to do, although I agree that starting with black was probably a bit too dark. I am using mostly Vallejo paints for my base colours and GW paints for drybrush.

Base gunmetal or chainmail silver

drybrush with necron compound

wash with drakenhof nightshade

highlight with runefang steel

any suggestions on this?

I am not overly keen on very bright metallic models, I think they look a bit too showcasey and not very gritty, but my current test model is too dark I think.

A gamer after my own heart. My Silver Skulls are fairly bright. Some paint them darker. I only use Vallejo paints so not sure what the new  GW equivalents are.

Primed Black

Vallejo Air Gun (71072) base

Black wash

Vallejo Air Chrome (71064) highlights and details (shoulder trim, helmets)

There are actually quite a few SS collectors that are or used to be active on B&C. If you search you can find our threads. Had a lore thread too. I think it's under the UM forum now.

Also, your test model will not look so dark if you add brighter highlights to say shoulder trim and the helmet and all the other details you haven't done yet. I say finish the test model you have before you say it's too dark.

Thanks for the replies, it's good to see there are some other Skull enthusiasts! I have finished the test model and done a heavier drybrush of Necron compound which has made the overall colour quite a bit lighter and I'm pretty happy with it. I am just trying to decide the bolter casing colour at the moment!

I'd use a black primer followed by a base coat of leadbelcher. Then a wash of nuln oil.

Then use a heavy drybrush of ironbreaker on the raised areas, followed by either a drybrush of necron compound or a highlight of runefang steel.

As far as bolter casino goes, either black, dark red or even dark blue would work nicely.

Best of luck!

Bolter casing should either be blue or black. Blue was used back in 3rd edition and earlier. Black has been used sense 4th edition.
