Has the Legio Cybernetica been retconned?

What exactly is it supposed to do now? All of the other Mechanicus sub-factions (Taghmata, Ordinatus [we haven't seen Skitarii yet but I imagine that list when it comes will build on what's come before]) use Battle-automata freely so what is there purpose now they aren't the controllers of this tech anymore?

No, the Legio Cybernetica stills controls battle-automata. Massacre and Extermination both state that explicitly.

Thallax Cohorts aren't true battle-automata. They're controlled by a complete human brain and nervous system, not a machine-spirit, albeit traumatised and emotionally stunted by the process. They're the only troops assigned to the Ordo Reductor so far.

The Taghmata Omnissiah is different. A Taghmata is a force temporarily drawn together from the resources available on a single Forge World for a specific purpose in a feudal manner. So the constituent parts would still technically belong to the other branches. Automata serving in a Taghmata are still Legio Cybernetica, their Thallax Cohorts are still Ordo Reductor, just like their Knights still belong to a Household.

In addition to what Lucien wrote, check the "Support Unit" rules for Thagmata and Cybernetica. You'll notice that Cybernetica can use Castellax as mandatory troops, that's the base of their army, while adsecularis counts for nothing, worse than servitors. And opposite is true for Thagmata, they can use adsecularis as mandatory because that's the base of their army, while Castellax are "borrowed" from Cybernetica, so they are only "Support Unit".

It's not normally an issue though. Ad Secularis are so cheap and effective as objective holders, you'll usually take 1-2 min units. Also, Thallax count as mandatory Troops in both lists, and you usually want Thallax because A: look cool and B: they kill vehicles pretty well.

The Legio Cybernetica list is pretty meh these days. Taghmata is just straight up better, from the HQ to things like Ursarax (finally adding a fast melee unit to the faction), not to mention transports and battle tanks.

Depends on the game size and FOC. 2 squads of castellax, some magos to stand nearby and Thantar are the best allies you could wish for most of the rites of war. And up to 1500pts they are unbeatable army themselves. For bigger games, however, I agree that Cybernetica list does not have enough options.

Precisely - I lose nothing at lower levels when playing my legio list. I could play it as Taghmata but it looks best as Legio. I have lost once with it.
