New Ravenwing Project - Updated 7/21/2016 BLACK KNIGHTS!

Thanks everyone :). As per B&C rules, once I'm confident the prints will hold up, I'll put a link to them in my signature. At the moment I'm smack dab in the middle of finals week, so all my time and energy is committed to that. My last test is Wednesday, so I'll endeavor to have a good update before Friday (or the weekend at the latest). I plan on going to my local GW on Friday to celebrate surviving my first quarter back in college (I'm out pacing the youngun's. I guess 31 isn't too late for another degree). Maybe I can get some action shots of my Ravenwing :).

Until then, the one bad piece of news is that the flange on the mace is too small and the ends of some of the feathers are breaking off. I need to double their thickness and order a test print before I'm confident in them. The hammers seem fine so far. The wings are slightly bendy but not brittle. I've dropped a few and squeezed the wings and they don't seem to care.

So, after finals and a bit of rest, I'll be ready to venture further into this great experiment of 3d printed minis.

Sorry all. I wanted to update the maces and do a quick battle report with my first game. Unfortunately I came down with something nasty that laid me low for almost a week, and now I'm back in classes.

I'll try to get some stuff up ASAP, but the modeling will have to wait a little while.

Alrighty, first up are some pictures of the ravenwing models on standard GW tables:

It's a nice asthetic and keeps the attention on the bikes instead of a base that doesn't match the terrain it's on.

Okay, now for a brief batrep.

DISCLAIMER: It was a while ago and my first 7th edition game. I may not have all the rules 100% correct or I may not remember correctly.

I forgot the mission we rolled but it involved one objective on each table edge worth 3 victory points. We decided to play on the long edge 12" in.

Total points: 2500

He was playing blood angels with approximately the following:

Mephiston, Gabriel Seth, 12ish death company in a land raider Redeemer

2x tactical squads in rhinos

sterngaurd squad with 1 flamer and 6 combi-meltas in a rhino

5 man devastator with 4 plasma cannons in a razorback

Vindicator

Sanguinary guard with apothecary, inferno pistol, jump packs

BAAL predator with heavy bolter sponsons

He custom made his army after he saw mine.

My force:

Sammael on bike

librarian on bike w/PFG

chaplain on bike

10x black knights w/3 grenade launchers

6x RWAS with 4 plasma, 4 melta, 4 flamers

6x attack bikes with multi-meltas

A little ridiculous, I know, but I wanted to get it out of my system.

I won the firs turn and put my melta bike squadrons, librarian/chaplain/black knights/sammael in reserve as a single unit. The rest of my bikes started on the table.

He deployed everything but the sanguinary guard.

I scouted my bikes after his deployment to focus on his right flank and the majority of his forces while leaving 3 bikes to guard the objective. I rolled a bonus to cover saves for the objective.

My first turn was rather uneventful and nothing of note happened.

His turn he moved his land raider redeemer up and disembarked his deathstar HQ unit. He also disembarked his devastators from the razorback and climbed into a building. His vindicator fired and missed. His baal killed 1 biker.

My turn, everything but one squadron and an attack bike entered play. My black knights entered on the opposite table of his deathstar (sadly) and most of the melta weapons entered next to his land raider.

The melta weapons failed every attack vs the land raider. That's 2 multi-meltas and 4 melta-guns that all completely failed to hit or even glance. On the other side of the table, I did much better. The bikes killed 2 devastators (both plasma cannons), destroyed a rhino, vaporized the tactical squad that came out of it, and blew up the vindicator. My librarian was able to cast perfect timing, so all the plasma ignored cover.

During his turn he assaulted a bike squad with his deathstar unit and wiped it out. Then burned through all my bikes on that side with the redeemer (ouch). On the other side, he disembarked his sternguard and fired them at my black knight with the combi-meltas, flamer, and vengeance round. Between their 3+ and 4++ from PFG, I suffered no casualties. He lost 1 of his own models to overheating. His 2 plasma cannon devastators took out 2 bikes from a RWAS. His sanguinary guard landed, but failed to cause any damage the turn they arrived.

My turn came and my last ravenwing units came on the board next to the redeemer. The multi-melta got a glance and braced for the worst. My RWAS  shot and assaulted his devastators and wiped them out. The attack bike fired at his second rhino and destroyed it. My black knights popped his sternguard with a rad and stasis grenade, then moved in for the kill.

Lets just say the sternguard were flayed like a thanksgiving turkey at a lawnmower convention.

Sadly we had to end it there as the shop closed an hour earlier than I thought.

In the end it was 11/5 in my favor. I had first blood, line breaker, my objective, and a bunch of kill points. He had 2 kill points and his objective.

The only thing between me and his objective was a baal predator, tactical squad, and rhino. The black knights were a complete wrecking ball. The PFG made the obscenely hard to kill and the chaplain's hatred boost amplified the rending ability.

I was happy with everything but the anti-vehicle performance. Granted, I rolled a slew of 1's and only ever hit with a single multi-melta out of 6. I know my HQ blob was a major point sink, but I just really wanted to roll that setup at least once before I died, just to say I did. I think perhaps the only thing funnier may have been a librarius conclave with 4x librarians on bike attached to the unit, with the chaplain and sammael.

Silly, perhaps, but... well... silly.

Alrighty, I updated my sig with a link to where you can get my designs printed out. Feel free to PM me any questions you may have.

I may sideline my ravenwing for a little while and work on Skitarii stuff. I'm planning on heavy ballistae conversions and and entirely unique onager. Before that though, I'll finish the scorpius and helios whirlwind turret designs. I do need those for my ravenwing army pretty badly.

  • 1 year later...

Finished up (mostly) my black knights. They still need the instrumentation painted in, but I completed enough to put them on their bases:

I don't have time to go into detail right now (impending exam), but here are the preliminary pictures:

Any idea how well those 3rd printed weapons hold primer and paint.

Look great so far, but would also love to see them painted on some models.....  Close Up!

Literally the post above this one msn-wink.gif

I'll try to get a better close in, but my phone sucks.

They hold primer just fine. Painting is slightly rough but very doable.

Lookin good man.  I was the other DA player at Heroic Knight yesterday.  Didn't have time to stay and watch the match, how'd your Ravenwing fare?

Thanks.

I didn't want to outflank, but both games turned out to be hammer and anvil, so I didn't have much of a choice. Running lenghwise against entrenched IG and Tau was no bueno :D.

I was using a silly army vs tau to try some new stuff out and only had 3 units of bikes. I rolled really bad that game (couldn't even cast a power until turn 4, despite getting 9 power dice). I had more kill points, but he had enough objective points to win.

The one you probably saw was the primarily ravenwing army vs IG. I won by turn 3, though we were both pretty tired and made some mistakes. I swarmed him with attack bikes carrying multi-meltas, which saved my bacon. That was a lot of tanks.

I've recently discovered that the new Gem paints are awesome for head lamps, lights and lenses (like on scopes etc). If you are going with red give them a go.

Love the clear bases.

Thanks. I'll probably use the paints I currently have. Plus I haven't seen any Gem paints around here.

Ok, the bases are so choice. I scanned the thread and may have missed it, but where can you get them?

Thanks happy.png

I designed and cut them when I worked at a company with an old Optima laser engraver. I still have a line on a company that does acrylic work, but I lost the original designs.
