ViV: Help needed on creating an effective Killteam

Good Morning Internet!

So, I have finally convinced some friends to (re-) enter Tabletop Gaming and to my delight, we are looking to create some small skirmish forces /kill-teams based on the Victory is Vengeance rules.

I haven`t played an actual game under 7th edition rules, so i  am at a loss at which to chose.

Have any of you any advice on which units make good kil teams or part of teams? Which make good hero choices?

Do any of the Legion specific units stand out?

i am a staunch supporter of the Warmaster (with an unhealthy tendency toward the Xth) , but since I am not aiming at building an entire army. i am open to suggestions and look forward to your ideas and experiences!

I mean, for me, an Apothecary or Primus Medicae would be a stand out choice, especially the latter, since he's a Captain + Apothecary and will grant FNP to the whole team.

The Vigilator is also a VERY good choice as we've started to realize since the PM, Libby and MoS received their "Support Officer" rule in the FAQ.

The Champion might be good for a Beatstick. I wouldn't take the Preator at all even though he is a better Champion due to his restrictive cost.

Maybe a Destroyer Marine with the Rad Missile Launcher would be a good option too since that -1T on an Assault 1 ML is pretty rad (huehuehue) especially when up against Multi-Wound opponents.

Seekers for Preferred Enemy on a given target.

Legion Tactical Vets with Suspensor Web Weapons; Heavy Bolter or Missile Launcher. They have other options too, mind you.

Spamming the every loving crap out of Terminators could be a good idea; especially since my favorite Generic HQ, the Primus Medicae, can take Terminator Armor.

Theres also the myriad Legion Specific Units such as the Palatine Blades, Templar Brethren, Gorgons, Red Butchers, Headhunters, Grave Wardens, etc.

For legion rules, Iron Hands are a special stand out due to their "Inviolate armor" Rule becoming all the more powerful due to the Infantry v Infantry setting of Kill Teams.

Imperial Fists also make for a good Legion to choose due to their +1BS with Bolters, re-rolling to hit in challenges and Stubborn when in Cover.

Alpha Legion and Raven Guard due to Infiltrate and/or Scout being readily available to their units.

If your going for a CC focus, Emperors Children are a Stand out over World Eaters since the latter requires the destruction of units to come into effect.

Death Guard are also decent with their immunity to Fear and Pinning and forcing re-rolls for Poison and Fleshbane.

Night Lords are rather situational since most of their buffs come into effect under Night Fighting, outnumbering your opponent and on Game Turn 1 (Stackable 6+ Cover Save).

Salamanders are also situational since you'd want to spam Flamers and Melta with them. Though this might actually be a good thing since spamming templates over small squads quickly brings the pain.

Those that went unmentioned are those that I don't feel all that comfortable commenting about.

Thanks for the good overview.

The Apothecary option seems both solid and fluffy -let`s not let all that geneseed go to waste!

I had actually forgotten that TDA is an option here both in equipment and troop choice...

which might make a fine excuse to buy those shiny Grave Wardens after all !

Yeah, I would have put Jetbikes there since an HQ on Jetbike (especially a Primus) Turns into a REALLY hard to kill TEQ unit with a LOT of Mobility. I however, do not think they fit the theme of a Kill Team unless you made 2 lists : One Jetbike Mounted another with them On Foot.

Why Jetbike Primus Medicae? For the sake of argument, consider Iron Hands rules : 2+, with Refractor 5++ invuln, Jink, FNP, -1S to shooting due to Inviolate Armor, 12" Movement with possibility to go 24" (iirc) with Flat Out.

The rest of the Jetbikes will only have no Invulnerable Save but come stock with a Heavy Bolter that, with IF rules, is BS5 and options for Culverins, Plasma Cannons or Multi-Meltas.

So a Squad of 10 (3 special weapons) and Primus Medicae is a, in my opinion, quite dirty combo. That said this will run 600+ Points hahahaha

Back on topic, Death Guard make for one of the better all terminator options since both their Legion Units are TDA equipped and due to the small scale of Kill Teams, become quite effective. The Grave Wardens especially due to the different firing modes of their weapons and mix in the Deathshroud and GW's Shredding Flamer Templates en masse and you have a unit that can force a LOT of saves especially on smaller sized squads.

Red Butchers can be good too but they only excel in numbers due to weight of attacks and using the Legion Rules to full effect.

Best Generic Terminators would be the Imperial Fists ones since you can take 3++ Storm Shields on them galore and not, like the Salamanders, get stuck with Cataphractii armor due to how their shield works.

Larnean Terminators... I dunno. They all come stock with Volkite Chargers but their special weapon option of a Conversion Beamer makes them a weird choice since anything else taken just leaves them as ever-so-slightly different Generic Terminators. If the map is rather large and there is a decent amount of distance to traverse, having a Beamer might be good to start with though it will rapidly start loosing efficiency.

Gorgon Terminators are decent. They have in built FNP, -1S to shooting with their Legion Rules and can force blind tests. They can also take Graviton Guns but other than that are pretty much Generic Terminators.

Phoenix Guard I'm meh on since they are 100% CC focused and serve more as a multiplier in an EC force.

Thanks again.

Even if It would be just an excuse to buy the shiny Grave Warden Models. And I DO enjoy building TDAs!

The Larnean would probably be an easy sell if they had gorgeous looking minis already....

The jet bike themed kill team is looking rather tempting. I can just picture an Night Lords Search and Destroy squad, horsemen of the apocalypse style theme. Running down fleeing loyalists....

Also...Volkites!

Have to head over to the FW website ....and a cold shower...
