Sarchas
Escalation league at our local shop, first game at 500 points. My list was Rune priest Lvl. 1 (rolled jaws) Dreadnaught Helfrost Claw with flamer Pod Wolf guard x 5 Jump packs Thunderwolf cavalry Axe and storm shield His (roughly as I have no idea about Tau) Fire warriors with his Hq Stealth suits Crisis suits Turn 1 my rune priest took a wound from his fire warriors, the crisis suits stripped a wound from 2 of my cavalry, and his stealth suits infiltrated on to the relic, thrusting away with it towards his table edge. In my turn my priest moved up, cast living lightning and took out 5 fire warriors.cavalry and jump guard slogged up to mid field... The dreadnaught came in but scattered so he couldn't hit anything Turn 2 His crisis suits penetrate my dread and blow it up...then boost away in the assault phase. Fire warriors shoot and take out my rune priest ( in hind sight I should have boosted him out if line if sight) and the cowardly stealth suits leg it with the relic! Cavalry move up, jump guard move up. Pod shoots but misses..... Looking grim fir the wolves. The cavalry manage to charge his crisis suits though, losing a brave soul to overwatch. One suit dies the others break and are over run! Turn 3 The Tau stealth suits are so scared they fluff thier shooting, causing no wounds. Fire warriors gun down one of the wolf guard. Stealth suits boost in to cover.... But not far enough! Thunderwolves move up (unsure whether they can climb ruins so I don't but ask the TO) the wolf guard move up to the base if the ruins... Getting ready Turn 4 Fire warriors all run to the edge of the ruins roof to fire at my wolf guard, the guard shrug off their fire though. Stealth suits join the fire warriors in the roof (TO says the wolves can climb) so up he goes, bounding the the too floor and passing thier dangerous test. Only the axe weilding cavalry is left. Wolf guard also jump to the top floor and all pass their terrain test.... All fire thier pistols..... Doing nothing. NOW its assault time, the guard charge the stealth suits, losing nobody to overwatch, the cavalryman also charges and gets in unscathed! The wolf guard go first, killing all of the stealth team (probably should have had them charge the fire warriors) the guard then line up to face the dire warriors while the cavalryman takes the relic Turn 5 Shooting from the fire warriors wipes out the wolf guard unit, glorious deaths all! The cavalryman charges the fire warriors, it is nit the space wolf way slink away with our captured relic!! Overwatch strips a wound from him though, so 1 wound left and about 6 fire warriors plus the HQ. The weakling Tau however do no wounds on combat. The cavalryman smashes 3 of them with his axe!! Leadership test, which he fails.... They run!!! I don't manage to over run them. The game does not go any further, so ends with his men fleeing in terror and the lone wolf holding the relic!!! Could have played my priest a lot better and was pretty unlucky about the dreadnought blowing up. Only 500 points but I think I have a chance when we get to bigger points, with my wolves and their imperial fist allies who will be joining them! The Tau guy did not take it well, they are always the guys who hate to lose lol Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302173-my-first-tau-win/ Share on other sites
Ulrik_Ironfist
I'm not going to lie, there are a ton of Tau players out there that only play tau because of the battlesuit cheese. I run battlesuit lists, because I really like their fluff but I run infantry and auxiliaries, too. I Use the heck out of piranhas and pathfinder heavy weapons teams. as well as running air support. I run a farsight enclaves "brigade combat team". What I don't have is mobility for my fire warriors. I'm big on Air/armored cavalry tactics. I do like winning, but it's not the end of the world if I don't. Good win. Sarchas
:) same list this week against Orcs and then Grey Knights...... Grey knights should be a pain once the points go up but right now he can only afford one Psyker and 2 5 man termi squads. Sarchas
So I tabled both orks and Grey Knights. Now however the groups are getting shuffled and I've landed with elder, elder/ dark elder and a brother space wolf to fight. I'm not sure what the others are using, I know the dark elder guy has a squad with haywire grenades, so the goes my dreadnought. And he has slith in one of those open top transport things. The wolves I'm fighting will be cavalry, grey hunters, 2 lone wolves and a wolf Lord on foot.... And whatever he adds for his extra 250 points. Think I'm going to lose quite badly this round, gonna upgrade my priest to lvl 2 and runic armour and take a squad of long fangs 2lc, 2ml and a pc.. Anyone got any tips for fighting elder? Amarog
i've played both eldar and dark elder. what i do love is that their skimmers / flyers are all made of paper so dont worry about them with special weapons, a ton of bolter would bring them down. its the cc that is interesting now im playing wolves, the major disadvantage is having to wait to take your attacks as they have the higher initiative usually. any ideas on some of what eldar he is going to take? Sarchas
No idea what elder will be bringing, I didnt manage to see his first round games. Do you think I should keep the long fangs or go with something else? have most models except tanks ( only have a LR and a rhino) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302173-my-first-tau-win/#findComment-3936842 Share on other sites
Amarog
i dont think you will have much benefit from long fangs, although if you do all heavy bolters might be ok against on coming mincers! i think you can go either prep for some cc pain, and hope you have either enough units, or enough strength to be able to withstand their first onslaught of attacks and then still have enough to fight back and take names. or you can take a ranged approach and try and shooty shooty as much as you can straight off the bat (plenty of bolter and templates will do this) and then just have a couple of select CC like TWC .. maybe a small termie unit. 2 units of skyclaws with flamer would work too. dunno, im still novice so just throwing some stuff out there. Sarchas
Need to keep the same army, just get 250 points to add to it. Was thinking Long Fangs since right now I have pretty much no ranged guys. Will decide tonight and get painting :-p long as I beat the other wolves I'll be happy lol Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302173-my-first-tau-win/#findComment-3936857 Share on other sites

tylerw
Can you tweak your current units, such as changing weapons for the dread? Otherwise I would just have him sit back and shoot at the haywire users Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302173-my-first-tau-win/#findComment-3936885 Share on other sites
Sarchas
Afraid the dread arms are glued on and not magnetised (I know, school boy error :P). List submitted with the long fangs! wil see how I get on.
