I'm working on creating my own successor Chapter of White Scars with a dragon theme - still researching how this works exactly but was really more interested in my own unique paint scheme AND I have a hard time painting with white lol.  Its similar to the Ravenguard paint scheme (I'm obsessed with the dark, smash your face looking Armies ;-) I LOVE playing with this Army, they are a really fast and fun in your opponents face so fast it makes their head spin.  Went for a descent tabletop standard as we're currently doing an escalation league at my local meta and I'm trying to get my entire Army painted over the next 3 months.  Its a lot of work!!  Anyway here they are, enjoy

Stormtalon is a work in progress..

Biker bases were constructed using thin sheets of cork board and sand painted to look like grass

Look Good. Very nice freehand. I almost wish you had more white on the stormtalon so you could show off like you did on the thunderfire.

Thanks! Not to worry, I think I may do a big ole White Dragon somewhere on the Stormtalon msn-wink.gif

Just in case you guys wanted to see how the bases were made I've included some of the process below and the materials used.  You can get as fancy as you want on yours but this seems to be a very easy way to quickly make some really cool bike bases.  Enjoy!

First I started with a roll of thin cork board.  I bought it on Amazon for $9.

Then I primed all of the bike bases (no picture).  After the primer was dry I tore off pieces of the cork board and matched them up on the bases in whatever I thought would look like cool rubble.  Once i was happy with the rubble I use the hot glue gun to permanently affix the pieces to the bases.

As you can see below my workstation looks like this...

After the rubble is done I begin to paint on glue for the sand, which will later become the grass.  The sand isn't bought, it was collected from a local kids park..  I do this step and the next one at a time for each base so the glue doesn't dry out.

Then I dip the freshly white glued base into the sand.  If there are parts that didnt get sand on them I just pick some sand up with my fingers and sprinkle it on.

Then I get out the airbrush.  I use Valejo Model Air black for the basecoat..

After the paint has fully dried then its time to bring out the dry brush.  I dry brush all of the edges of the rubble using Valejo Game Color Wolf Grey (not model air, just regular Valejo game paint) - don't worry about getting it on the sand as you will paint over it later.

Next step is to paint the green on the sand.  I used Valejo Model Air Olive Grey with a brush.  The reason I do this is I like the consistency of the paint as it goes on easier.

Then I do touching up where necessary and paint the rim on the base so it looks cleaned up. On these ones I used black.  The original post shows where I painted some of them using the color Khaki.  After the final step you can take this even further by dry brushing the grass, adding mud, adding body parts from your most hated army with blood all over them.  The sky is the limit!

Great job!  I also have a successor chapter that also has a similar pattern, only dark purple and white.

Your how-to on the base work (as well as your chapter symbol) is inspiring.

Thanks!  Would you mind posting some pictures of your painted Army here?  I'm loving the picture in your profile!  Also what's your experience using White Scars?  Have you been successfully beating your opponents?  I'm finding that Space Wolves are my toughest opponent with their new codex.  Other than that I've been close to tabling other Armies I've played against by turn 3/4.

Yeah, I think I will be posting some army pics.  I've been painting several unused units in an effort to complete my 2nd company.  My stuff is tabletop-quality but it'll be great if it helps to encourage others.

Generally, I take a mixed bike/rhino list with a landspeeder/stormtalon firebase and it causes a lot of trouble on the tabletop.  If I play it right it can be brutal.

That sounds like a terrifying combination.  I've found that throwing a Thunderfire Cannon in the list somewhere is pretty devastating as well, especially against horde Armies.  Ignores cover is brilliant, especially vs Guard, Tau, Orks, etc

Very cool dude! I must ask is your Dragons free hand or transfer?

Im currently doing a silver WS sucessor and I'm having trouble finding transfers.

All of the dragons on the shoulder pads and TFC are freehand.  The only transfers I used are the numbers on the left shoulders.  In fact I just finished the second TFC.  Check 'em out!  Tried to paint the barrels as though they were discolored from the super heating when firing shells - just like what happens with titanium

More work in progress.. so far I'm very close to having 16 bikes painted up.  Should have them done by tomorrow.  Check out the Black shoulder pads with white dragons on these three.  I'm really liking the white on black as well.  I spent a little time on these guys' faces as well so that they would really draw the eye in when looking at the model.  Very happy with the result and can't wait to field them all tomorrow!

God you're good with the freehand.

My one criticism, and this may be a trick of the photos, is that the face & hair of the guy with the white arm looks much better than the guy using the chaos head with the topknot. Not only does the face have better shading, but the hair looks much more natural on the white-armed guy than the topknot.

Thanks for the compliment and critique!  Yeah it appears the photo is focusing on the guy with the mustache.  The other guy is just out of focus.  With that being said though I'm not used to painting skin so this was a real challenge for me.  The result ended up being better than I thought it would but I am always learning!!

Here are the bikers so far.  Finished 6 more last week..

Looking nice.

Is there a symbolism in the white arms on certain models?

The white arms are a right of passage and earned only by forging through the most heroic battles with their brothers.  This entire Successor Chapter is made up of only the most elite warriors recruited in secret from their parent Chapter.  Similar to the Grey Knights, they take up missions where its almost certain that the battle will be lost only to arrive from the shadows to slay their foe with precision and speed.

...as my journey continues with this Army there will be more to follow.  My experience on the battlefield is precisely what I described above.  Presently I'm in an escalation league at our local meta which began at 500pts and has worked its way up to 1,000 over the past 6 weeks.  Presently my Army is 8-1 (my 1 loss was in a 500 pt game vs Space Wolves where I had a VERY unlucky roll with a valuable bike squad and  run off the table in turn 1 - DOH!!).  Almost half the victories however have been tabling the opponent by turn 4/5.  This isn't by using power lists either, its just by using bikes very effectively where each squad works together to smash the opponent.  If used right this Army is brilliant!  I've developed some new strategies that I think will help tie in some loose ends which worked wonders in my most recent game.  I would love to hear all of your experiences with them!  God speed

  • 2 weeks later...

Here's an update on my work in progress on the ironclads.  Just have to add some toxic waste to the bases and rust/battle damage to the dreds.  Hope you like it!
