stev
So about to start gluing today...whoohoo Anyway, was thinking again, is it best to put heavy weapons in infantry squads where they are harder to kill but potentially the 9 lasgun shots from the other guys are wasted or in a seperate heavy weapons squad, where the reverse is true. It doesbt really matter for the purposes of building them I guess. Ill build the heavy weapons the same so if I blob the squads they will compliment each other so I can do either, was just wondering. WarriorFish
As ever it depends on what you need - and what is best. In infantry squads they are much safer and easier to protect, but it's harder to focus their fire effectively and you can easily waste other model's guns with the bigger/AT weaponry. In a HWS they can focus their fire effectively as well as provide home objective sitters but they are vulnerable to Instant Death. What about a compromise of several combined squads? More effective HWTs, but yet more squandered points standing around catching bullets... There is no right answer, it depends on what you need and the ever present meta. For me, I make use of HWS, but prefer the cheaper ones. Mortars to lob death safely are nice, and a trio of autocannons is effective for a reasonable price. The weaknesses of HWSs can be mitigated with good use of cover and saturation from more infantry targets, but if you have 3 lascannons freeming away with orders and whatnot then they'll attract attention! CyderPirate
I'd go with HWS most of the time, mainly because you can issue your orders to them whilst your enemy is too far away to make use of First rank fire! But as Fish said it depends on what you need. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302361-where-to-put-heavy-weapons/#findComment-3927586 Share on other sites
pathatrick
Side note, Can heavy weapons use their lasguns instead after they have moved? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302361-where-to-put-heavy-weapons/#findComment-3927611 Share on other sites
CyderPirate
Yup, they're equipped with a single lasgun. No reason that they can't fire it if they move. PureFodder
HWS actually cost more if taken on their own as opposed to taken as part of an infantry squad. Plus they are much easier to protect if there are 8 chumps infront of them to absorb bullets. I would never take them on their own as they are too many points for a unit that is too fragile. Mortars however are best as a squad of 3 behind LoS blocking terrain. Marshal Argos
I always take the in a HWS. I then assign one of my normal Inf Squads to protection detail, and leave my CCS or a PCS back there as well. That way I can issue orders to the heavy's as needed and the Inf squad acts as meat shields if needed. The most important thing for me is to get your HWS teams into cover in the first turn. That will at least give them covers saves through the game. CoffeeGrunt
I find they don't really put out enough hurt to justify spending another 40pts+ to add 8 dudes and extras to them. It also makes target priority a lot easier for your opponent.
