ThatOneMarshal
Hey guys so hobby ADHD strikes again and after watching Patton for the first time I have reconsidered doing guard. I've been doing black templars and blood angels recently and I've been wanting to get a break from well marines. The marine statlines all good and all but I want to play either xenos or imperial guard. So that brings me to my question is it possible to do non gunlining imperial guard? As a marine player I have learned to patiently hate gunlines. They are really boring to play. I've been thinking of doing an aggressive IG army with either vets in chimeras rolling up with leman russes and platoons to bubble wrap and run to objectives. Also I was wondering if the only way to run blob guard is to gunline? The other army I have been considering is tau who from my understanding can actually be a fast force if desired. However that is a topic not for this forum. That is a question for tau online probably. Basically my question is can I run a non gunline IG army and would it be competitive and fun? Thoqqu
Plasma vets in chimeras is to my understanding the competitive choise of our army. When it comes to fun the options are limitless =) I've had games with 2 blobs of 50 guardsmen, sergeants geared with power weapons and lord comissar and yarrick keeping up the morale. Works surprisingly well. Then there is the deathstrike but I believe many people in this section are tired of me when it comes to it. In short, its fun. WarriorFish
Absolutely. The days of mandatory gun line Guard are long gone, we can be competitive in many ways thanks to our last two solid codices :D So yes, it can be competitive and more importantly a lot of fun! Vets as a great choice as Thoqqu said but you can also use Platoons. You can mount soldiers in Chimeras, or advance with waves of infantry - or a mix. The codex is your oyster with the myriad ways you can build an army :) For example I make use of mechanised Vet squads to troubleshoot, with advancing squads of infantry to pin down the enemy and secure objectives. All under the protective guns of my tanks and artillery. Want to send more units on the attack? No problem - Hellhound tanks and Sentinels can do a great job supporting assault lines. You can trundle up some Russ variants behind your lines too for some close range big guns. So it's not a question of if it can be done, but rather how you'd like to do it ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302454-non-gunlining-imperial-guard/#findComment-3929191 Share on other sites
Bionicman
It is one of the best codices atm when it comes to choices. Competitive? I don't know, surely not Eldar or Tau like. But the possibilies to build different armies... are endless. Gunline, all infantry, tank heavy, AirCav, semi Mech, chimera MSU spam, there are so many units and options. WarriorFish
Who wants the boring crutch of the power builds anyway? Leave that to the weak xenos, in the Guard we fight and win properly! As I've often said, if you want a certain build for Guard there's always a way to make it work :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302454-non-gunlining-imperial-guard/#findComment-3929272 Share on other sites
CoffeeGrunt
I have a great fondness of the Hellhound chassis as well as Sentinels. Using the Fast Attack options really changes up how mobile Guard can be, and the artillery is more than capable of reaching across the table to support! I use a blob of 50 Conscripts with a Priest as my pressure unit. Advancing with that and threatening to bury Objectives in bodies is too much fun, once managed to Sweep a Chaos Marine unit with them. :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302454-non-gunlining-imperial-guard/#findComment-3929278 Share on other sites
