bigted
Hi everyone Today I used green stuff for the first time to make a Colonel Straken model to lead my Catachan army. I think he looks pretty good, especially considering I've never used green stuff before. Also, tutorials I read on the internet highly recommended sculpting tools. I didn't have any on hand and I just used a toothpick and my hands. Would I have gotten a better result if I used sculpting tools? Anyway, here's the model (I took pics while I made them so you can get an idea of how I did it) http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah161/James_Dulcich/IMG_3086_zpsvgl1xz4g.jpg I cut off the shoulder on a Catachan body and then rebuilt the bit I cut off with green stuff. I also made a green stuff arm. http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah161/James_Dulcich/IMG_3088_zpszk93izly.jpg I glued the torso to legs and a head from the command squad box. I chose a head with an eyepatch to show that Straken has been in a lot of fights. http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah161/James_Dulcich/IMG_3091_zpsqh6aihxj.jpg I then made a shotgun out of a spare flamer and lasgun. I got the idea from this shotgun conversion http://fromthewarp.blogspot.co.nz/2012/07/iron-hand-straken-conversion-with.html but I changed it to make the shotgun pump action. http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah161/James_Dulcich/IMG_3098_zpsuivvbyeo.jpg Then I gave him a chainsword from the space marine vanguard vet kit. Each skull represents him surviving a grievous wound (there are 9 including the one on the pommel). I also glued on various pouches and grenades and a plasma pistol to his belt. In this photo I have started painting. http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah161/James_Dulcich/IMG_3117_zpshpmkpeoy.jpg http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah161/James_Dulcich/IMG_3119_zpsivymb77j.jpg http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah161/James_Dulcich/IMG_3116_zpsmf7vxxv2.jpg http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah161/James_Dulcich/IMG_3113_zpshztlgkvo.jpg http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah161/James_Dulcich/IMG_3111_zpsyk2ba8do.jpg This is the finished model after painting. His arm looks really bulbous in the pictures, but it doesn't actually look like that. Hope you enjoyed! pathatrick
I like it but that's a massive shotgun to one hand. :cuss any shotgun is big to one hand. I know this is Straken, and the bastard is practically all machine. Maybe some small cables in and out of his shooting arm? bigted
Yeah, the shotgun is completely ignoring the laws of physics . The main reason I did it like that is I want this guy to really stand out on the tabletop. It's a lot harder to make an itty bitty guardsman stand out than a space marine or eldar, as they have lots of decoration and, in the case of space marines, are a lot larger. My logic was that the best way to make this guy a real centerpiece was to make him so outrageously OTT that you can't ignore him . hendrik
That looks great for a first attempt!instead of only toothpicks you can also use your xtaco/cutter knife as a sculpting tool. Now we can still see your finger imprints a little bit.with the next model you can try sanding those of with some sanding paper after it cured. Hope you've picked up the greenstuff love as it's incredibly usefull! WarriorFish
The proper tools are worth getting - the more you have the better as you can then use the right tool for the job :) It's a good result for your first attempt so perhaps you have some hidden talent for it? Keep working at it and trying out new things to push yourself as that's the best way to learn :D His cybernetic arm is pretty big so the one handed shotgun would have looked more reasonable in his right hand :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302542-diy-colonel-straken/#findComment-3931185 Share on other sites
