The_Chaplain
Dear PC&A, I come today with several questions in regards to paint, and painting miniatures-- hopefully someone can help me. 1) Is there a website with a comprehensive listing of what paints come in the Scale 75 paint sets (fire and blood, metal 'n alchemy, etc.) sets? The actual scale 75 website doesn't show the specific paints per box set. 2) Are there competing paint companies to Scale 75 that produce paints that dry with an Ultra Matte finish? 3) Are there competing ink manufacturers to games workshop that make products ideal for bone colored armies? I have tried Seraphim Sepia in this post Devlan Mud world-- and I am less than impressed, to put it mildly. 4) I am looking to purchase an airbrush, and am giving quite a lot of consideration to the Badger 105 Patriot-- which is considered to be a work house airbrush. You can't airbrush without a compressor however, and that is where I could use advice. What is a dependable and quiet airbrush compressor, suitable for apartment living? I don't want to off potential neighbors or my soon to be wife, who would also be using the room for an office. Or is airbrushing something that shouldn't even be attempted inside the confines of an apartment? Better to know now before we move in, haha. 5) I'm at a total loss for this one. I would like to paint headlights on tanks similar to the Pre-LED streetlights seen in a lot of cities. Here are some (spoilered) images, showing what I'm talking about: http://www.britastro.org/dark-skies/images/LPS_road.jpg It's actually kind of hard to find a picture of what I'm talking about-- since cameras do not operate in the same way as our eyes, without the assistance of filters. But you can see that the lights have orange/yellow/red/white and even pink hues in them. Has anyone attempted something similar? Does anyone have a recipe for a similar effect? I'm obsessed with this idea, it seems entirely reasonable to me that the tech priests of a chapter/the mechanicum at large don't do anything without a lot of ceremony along with it; so it stands to reason that even the light bulbs in a landraider would be quite dim as opposed to the bright LED style most people seem to paint them in. Please, any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302565-several-paint-questions/ Share on other sites
Bung
1) Havent found a list of paints yet, but if you look up the paint sets there is a picture of the paint bottles where you can see the paint names, not perfect but working. http://www.scale75.com/image/cache/data/producto/SCALECOLOR/NMM1%20SET/Color_scale75_04-400x520.jpg 2) Havent found any colors like that yet. 3) Use Armypainters Dark Tone (the brown Ink) its nearly 100% like Devlan Mud. 4) Well there are several good compressors out there, i recommend one with a tank, so it wont need to work all time and look for the decibel, the lower the number, the lower the noise. 5) Since you will have an airbrush i recommand this video. I know it shows some filthy xenos warmashine painted but later (10th minute or so) there is a red OSL effect painted which could be what you are looking for. I tried it, and its pretty easy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0D-b-xomPoU&list=PLCmx6jVF6f2g0VMqWXU2fY2KivKcrCHWD&index=10 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302565-several-paint-questions/#findComment-3931302 Share on other sites
SickSix
1. Not familiar with Scale 75 sorry 2. Not sure 3. Vallejo's Game Color Ink set is basically their version of the old GW washes. 4. I actually got a small air brush compressor from Harbor Freight on the cheap and it has served me well. It is quiet but no tank. So it will run most of the time you are working. http://www.harborfreight.com/air-tools/air-compressors/16-hp-58-psi-oilless-airbrush-compressor-60329.html Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302565-several-paint-questions/#findComment-3931312 Share on other sites
Lucien Eilam
I have tried Seraphim Sepia in this post Devlan Mud world-- and I am less than impressed, to put it mildly. It's still not quite the same, but you might want to at least try the correct replacement: Agrax Earthshade is the new Devlan Mud. Seraphim Sepia replaced Gryphonne Sepia. What is a dependable and quiet airbrush compressor, suitable for apartment living? Truly quiet is usually expensive. I can't hear my Iwata outside the room it's in, but it was the better part of £200. Getting a tank to reduce how often it needs to make noise is a cheaper option. sockwithaticket
1. If you go to the scale 75 site and click on the sets they have a lot of pictures from various angles and the rear views detail the paints in the set quite clearly.2. The closest comparable finish to scale 75 is Reaper in my experience. It's not ultra-matte like scale 75, but it's still far more matte than I've gotten from anything else. That said, Reaper do a fantastic Anti-Shine Additive that when added to pretty much anything will get you a similarly matte finish. That's going off fairly limited experience at this stage as I've pretty much only just discovered it myself.3. Army Painter Soft Tone is quite a dark sepia colour (much better than GW's sepia) and the Strong Tone is as like for like a replacement as you'll find for Devlan Mud.4. Can't comment.5. In what respect are you at a total loss: technique, paints to use or something else? In general you'd go from a reddy-orange through to an amber-yellow to get that I reckon. Getting a tank to reduce how often it needs to make noise is a cheaper option. I'm not looking for church mouse fart level quiet, just something that wouldn't cause noise complaints from people in other apartments. It sounds like getting a compressor with a tank is the way to go in that case. Army Painter Soft Tone is quite a dark sepia colour (much better than GW's sepia) and the Strong Tone is as like for like a replacement as you'll find for Devlan Mud. Thats good to know, thanks. Vallejo's Game Color Ink set is basically their version of the old GW washes. Also extremely good to know information. It's still not quite the same, but you might want to at least try the correct replacement: Agrax Earthshade is the new Devlan Mud. Seraphim Sepia replaced Gryphonne Sepia. It's not the color that was the problem-- it was the consistency. It was probably a bad pot of the seraphim sepia- it had separated into liquid and a putrescent pigment "snot" that couldn't be recombined no matter what I tried. I've experimented with some other GW shades since then, and quite frankly, am just not a fan of the new formula they have implemented. I'll be using alternatives for my inking needs. That said, Reaper do a fantastic Anti-Shine Additive that when added to pretty much anything will get you a similarly matte finish. Do you know the exact name of the additive? That sounds extremely promising. In what respect are you at a total loss: technique, paints to use or something else? In general you'd go from a reddy-orange through to an amber-yellow to get that I reckon. Paints to use more than anything else. I realize the technique will need to be based around OSL-- it's nailing that pinky orange color that will be the test. Thanks for all the comments so far guys, it's extremely helpful. I want to make sure I have all my ducks in a row so to speak before I sit down and start painting again. I've barely had cause to work with orange and when I have it's been more of a brown-orange so can't really help with that, can say that Vallejo Model Colour Desert Yellow is a wonderful amber-yellow colour if that's of any use. The_Chaplain
Necroing my own thread to ask another paint question-- waiting on my airbrush to arrive at my LGS, so figure I have time to ask for and work out a paint recipe. Does anyone know how/have insight into achieving the following purple glow? http://images.eurogamer.net/2013/articles//a/1/5/7/6/5/7/9/BloodDragon_1.jpg.jpg http://www.kickacts.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/818329f7c9e2a5dd3e3d93970a665df0879eb66c-600x400.jpg I'm on a real 80s retrowave kick (the new David Hasslehoff video is to blame), and that purple glow would be perfect on plasma guns in my mind-- just the right level of retro. So again, any have any ideas on paint combinations for it? Bung
Well, i would go simple, with an airbrush. White and a purple you like. Use white for the center of your glow, for small parts like small OSL do it with a brush. Then spray your thinned purple for the glow. infyrana
Going on from Bung's suggestion, check out the thread by Awaken_Realms under Tutorials. There's a nice link to doing a Riptide in there, he uses the OSL with the red (akin to your lamp lights in your OP) as well as blue. You could simulate the slight red tint on the purple with a red glaze perhaps (which you'll see used in the vids). Hth. shaun03
I use scale paints for 99% of units just few colors from different brands. I haven't seen another company that gives the matted look. Sometimes it looks cloudy and bolchly. Over all I there great paints to pick up. I haven't pick up there mew fantasy line yet. They are ticker than most paints so thining them is huge, personally I haven't gotten it 100% yet. They hold up well on wet palate too. Easy clean up. If your state side cheapite I seen for them is http://www.michtoy.com/. You can email them questions about the paints too, there really helpful. Even with few errors I made with scKe paints and still in learning phase with them. I highly recomend them. Judging from photo your a more advance painter than my self, so the learning curve with them might be easier for you. I just started to dabble in air brushing. I picked up smart jet comperssor as bundle deal when I picked up my brush. It's small light weight and doesn't make too much noise. It's designed for small home use, there not pricy either and work with just about any brand too.
