Baneblade Variants

I am looking at buying my first super heavy! I think I want to go for a tank over an imperial knight, and Emperor knows I won't buy any of that Xenos crap... So what should I run?

I was thinking a baneblade variant, but I'm not really sure. My main opponent plays tau, and runs a Tiger Shark, but I want to be able to compete in tournaments with it too. Do the commanders of the emperor's glorious imperial guard have any advice to offer?

As mentioned all the SHs are cool and fun, but not suited to AA duties. Magnetising is of course the best of all worlds especially as while the Baneblade is great it doesn't really bring Apoc level weaponry to the table if you want to be popping other SHs.

Remember, none of the knights will be dealing with anti-air duties very well either. Comparing the two isn't going to solve the basic problem. At the same time, I don't know of any IG superheavies that deal with flyers very well. It isn't really their job. We have Hydras (curse them) and our own Imperial Navy for that role. Actually, that does open up for one anti-air super heavy, the glorious Marauder Destroyer! It sounds perfect for you.

As far as tanks though, consider the humble Valdor Tank Destroyer. Its cheap(ish) good for hunting tanks, and will get an average of 1/3 hits against flyers a turn of effectively a meltagun from across the table. Other super-heavies, such as Baneblades, are also not bad since splitting their fire means you can send some love snap firing while the ordinance still does its job.

Remember that Tigersharks not of the AX1-0 variety are sadly very mediocre, and the AX1-0 is still pretty limited. A battery of Hydras will make short work of it...

That said, as far as Superheavy options on the ground, the Baneblade chassis is the most famous and most competitive option to field, and canny magnetising during the build will ensure you can field whatever variant takes your fancy. The Stormlord is a favourite of most, due to Open-Topped Transport ability, and a nice load of dakka in the main gun. Other options include the Macharius chassis, which is weaker and lacks Transport ability, as well as having worse secondary options for not much cheaper. I have a Macharius Vulkan, and as much as I love the model and am proud of my paint job, it's been a shelf-sitter for some time now. The Malcador chassis as I understand it is similarly overcosted. I live in hope that Forge World release a new IA1 Edition with more up-to-date pricing.

I'm not so familiar with the Imperium's airborne Superheavies, sadly, but they're best supported with an Officer of the Fleet to give them a 2+ Reserve roll, and from what I hear they can be pretty devastating.

It is the AX1-0, forgot that there are two versions.

How would a TH Gunship work? I would have to save up for it, but my tax return is coming soon?

if it's a flyer you want don't look any further than the humble valkyrie kit from games workshop. with some plasticard tubing are some fooling around with the model you can practically make any flyer in the imperial navy, cheaper than their FW model...

here are a couple of examples:

here's a thunderbolt i made:
