Hey there.

After totting up a 2500 point list from FW and realising it comes to the better part of a grand.

Te though occurs, what do you guys think are the cheapest army to field, financially?

In terms of, I want a 2000 point list that doesn't cost my first born son.

Not gonna happen. Just purchase in affordable chunks suited to your budget or save your budget for the larger stuff. And keep playing the lottery. Then when you have your models take aaaaages on them to spread the pain of waiting/cost and show them the love that can only be given with time
My budget is teeny, and i rage impotently at being the only NL not to have half an army to display. I have to wait for work 5 weekers and pray the house/car doesnt need something or we get invited to do something. But patiently i wait and it pays off, Curze for xmas and the lady sees how much i would really like some robots (deo and contemptor) this month. Fortunately the good forumites of the b+c provide many good times and useful distractions

You could make Terminators cheaper by using regular 40k Indomitus terminators in place of the Tartaros terminators since Imperial Fists (and Blood Angels) according to Extermination had a decent supply of Indomitus. With bits orders you can pick up storm shields and close combat weapons on the cheap. You could swap the bad-ass 30k Templars with assorted Black Templars Sword Brethren too, if you really wanted you could sub Breachers using regular 40k tactical squads (with some modifications) and buy the boarding assault kits to save money too which you could also apply to 40k Apothecaries.

You are a bit screwed when it comes to Spartan tanks though :P

Ummm depending on how accurate you want to go. Cheapest I think would be a Pride of the Legion RoW with IW. 2500 points will be several squads of Cataphract terminators in normal land raiders. Two Squads of Tyrant Terminators with aftermarket cyclone launchers which is a good use of almost 600 points. Throw in a praetor in a raider with a terminator command squad and there you go.

2 Terminator squads and their land raiders 950ish points  $300ish

2 Tyrant squads and aftermarket launchers 600ish points $110

1 Terminator squad + landraider for a command squad $140ish 500 ish points

FW HQ what 40ish bucks and 390ish points.

There you go, 2500ish and $600 buckish You might find a lot of this cheaper ebay or bartertown.

You could get rid of the land raiders and add 3 more terminator squads and save some money as well.

the problem is ... if you want to do it right, you need to spend a lot of money :/ even if you use some GW plastic kits (which is legit, if you do some conversions on the infantry and use it to represent a late-heresy/siege of terra force) .. the "cheapest" legion may be the word bearers if you use mostly chaos space marine kits from GW though

Terminators or Legion specific specialty units (Red Butchers for WE, Templars for IF, Firedrakes for Sallies) are what I've seen to be most bang for the buck as far as dollar to points ratio.

Do you have a particular legion in mind? I don't recall seeing it in the OP.

Thanks guys.

And no its not really with a Legion in mind. I love IF. But, i have a time limits you see. Basically i need to get about..1500/2k worth of points for a local Campaign.

Its not competetive even slightly, its a really good laugh, 6 months local narrative driven affair, but i do want an army ready.

And i want to use a Legion force. I am on the side of Fists at the moment, but i will be honest, i just love 30k, i dont really have a favourite Legion at the moment. So anything would work. Have been thinking alot about IW, but im worried that they are a bit boring, but thats probably due to never having looked at them with any great detail lol. But i wont turn this into a "What Legion" thread.

It comes down to what army, for what Legion, i can buy in the next two months. Gives me a budget of about £600.

IF are one of only two current legions able to give their terminators deep strike so a Pride of the Legion RoW army would fit rather nicely into your budget constraints

Uhhhhh...Really quickly:

Pride of the Legion

HQ:

Sigismund; Use the PA Preator as a stand in (230 points)

Primus Medicae; Use the Other Preator in the Set - just add a bit of converting (~150)

Troops:

10 Terminators - Teleportation Transponder (Shooty Squad) (~300)

10 Terminators - Teleportation Transponder (Shooty Squad) (~300)

5 Terminators - Land Raider Phobos (Assault) (400+)

5 Terminators - Land Raider Phobos (Assault) (400+)

FA:

Seekers - 10 Combi-Weapons - LR or Rhino use normal Tacs + Combi-weapon set (300+ points with Rhino, 500+ with LR)

Heavy Support:

Land Raider Achilles-Alpha (300 points)

If you need AA on the Cheap: WW Hyperios or Tarantulas. If not, Deredeos and Contemptor-Mortis' though the Box-Mortis should be ok.

Take a look at the bundles. You can get a load of tacticals for around 225 (off my head without being able to check fw site. Its a data muncher) the templar/IF upgrade kits are available get a few depending on what you like. Leaves you 300ish to get a hq and supporting units. If you stick to 10 men squads gw raiders and rhinos will save you pennies on transport. A fully tooled contemptor comes in at 52 squid. Think you can sort 1.5k with a little savvy use of kits/spending. Dont forget to add 12% for delivery or visit hq so you can spend that 12% better

Sadly, the Terminator Bundles are gone; replaced by the PotL bundles with the Primarch.

Couple of things that might interest you, Frosty:

http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Space_Marines/Space_Marine-Infantry-and-Accessories/SPACE_MARINE_MKII_TACTICAL_SQUAD.html get a combi-weapon set on the side and you have 10 seekers.

http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/The_Horus_Heresy/Legiones_Astartes/Space_Marine_Legion_Army_List/Legion_Troops/Legion_Tactical_Squad/MKIV_MECHANISED_TACTICAL_SQUAD.html Same as above but with a ride.

http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Space_Marines/Space-Marine-Dreadnoughts/LEGION_CONTEMPTOR_DREADNOUGHT_TALON.html 3 Contemptors, just add a few extra arms/magnets to get the most value.

http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Forge__World_Bundles/LEGION_INVASION_FORCE.html Legion in a box, basically. 60 Tac Marines, so 3 20man Blobs, 2 Preators, 2 Apothecaries, etc. pretty decent value but it still lacks some of the pricier bits of a rounded list.

If only that Invasion Force was Cheaper for a little less in it, however i am extremely tempted.

Having spent about 4 hours making lists my head is completely :cuss ed. I have no clue what i am even doing now haha.

http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Forge__World_Bundles/LEGION_MKIV_STRIKE_FORCE.html There you go.

Play Raven Guard, acquire beakie helmets from all your space marine playing friends.

the Raven Guard can be built with mk6 pieces from the newest tactical box.

you get:

-beaky heads

-padless legs

-blank+studded shoulder pads

-mk6 torso

Sure, you still have to worry about bolter and backpack (who looks at arms, really?), but its a start.

WLK

Similarly the Alpha Legion can field a lot of Mark VI with the new background, you could even argue the later marks in the plastic box could be used due to the Alpha Legions ability to aquite new tech.

Saying that you could paint your models as Alpha Legion then use any rules saying your Alpha Legion are Infililtarters, so for one legion you can field 18....

RG would be another easier one to acquire. A few max tactical squads, used from ebay, some tac marines with sniper rifles bought from ebay with a cloak added for the special scout squad they get, bring a commander of some sort and the spiffy moritat they get. Arent they the legion that gets the special drop pod rule commander? A couple of the expensive but fun assault squads with twin lightning claws. Plus get the beakie heads from ebay. The RG army is an excellent idea whoever posted it first. With searching and bartering on ebay and bartertown you could probably field the small points you are wanting for less than $300.

To be honest Ravenguard would be the cheapest due MK6 being easily available without going to forgeworld.

If you want to do things on the cheap then eBay I'd your only option and you need to be damn lucky at that.

Saying that I'm doing Alpha Legion and at last check my proposed army is about £1500 which will get me 2000pts, it's expensive but not unreasonable.
