The Rewards of Treason- How to paint?

Hello,

I'm an avid Alpha Legion player and I'll be using some Iron Havocs in my 2k list thanks to the awesome rule 'The Rewards of Treason' (allowing the Alpha Legion to take one specialist unit from another legion).

My question is how do I paint them?

A) IW colours?

B. AL colours?

C) AL colours with a nod towards the IW

D) Something else?

Help would be appreciated guys!

I feel it's more about the Alpha Legion using the wargear/skills than the colour of the unit imo. Lets take a look:

Hardened armour - Mk3 or perhaps a more bulked up mk4, such as the Destroyer models?

Heavy bolters with shrapnel rounds (if used) - A different clip/drum/belt?

Tank Hunters/Deadly Aim - Some extra targeting equipment on the helmet or gun?

If it were me, I'd paint them as Alpha Legion but model them specially.

I would paint them either as "pure Legion unit", so Iron Warriors without any sign of the AL (otherwise it wouldn't make any sense oO) OR as pure Alpha Legions with specific equipment (f. e. cataphractii terminators with cyclone launchers, but with AL iconography and without IW bits)

I think it depends on your personal background for the unit. Are they marines recalled from spying on the iron warriors? Did you legion launch a covert mission to steal the tech or the plans? Or did the legionaries serve with the IVth legion for some time, and use the opportunity to learn the Iron warriors tactics and the capabilities of their wargear, which they've reverse engineered?

Option one lends itself to a full IW scheme, option 2 to a full AL scheme, option 3 maybe to a mixed scheme. You can justify whatever you want, the question really is what you want to paint, and what you want the background to be for the army.

They're MKIII, I can add some bits to them to look more veteran and an expert in their area.

I was thinking AL colour scheme with Hazard stripes on the shoulder trim?

I think hazard striping the weapons would keep them wholly AL while still adding some IW flavor

What I always wanted to do with Alpha Legion was paint their Legion colors on, then use some hairspray (or ironically chipping solvent from Vallejo), let it dry, paint the Legion they're impersonating, then go back with some paint thinner and chip the top layer away, showing the AL coloration underneath. Always thought that would be awesome for a Kill Team or something, but when the rules came out to actually use other Legions' Elite Squads, I think it would work just as well. Otherwise, just do them in AL scheme but give them unique wargear, etc. to match the rules.

If I was doing Alpha Legion I would paint them in Alpha Legion colours, representing stolen tech. But that's because I dislike the whole sneaky sneaky dress-up Alpha Legion. If you like that thing then if you paint them in their legion colour some little sign of the Alpha Legion would be cool. Either a subtle marking or their 'true colours' showing in chips.

I've always wondered why people insist on using the original models or the original Legion's look or colors when using RoT...

The XX have stolen blueprints and adopted the strategies of their fellow brothers; they didn't just steal suits of armour and other gear, they actually copied the design and made altogether new suits. So for example an Alpha Legionaire wearing Artificer Armour and fighting with a power sword can very well adopt a Templar Brethren fighting style without having to wear a tabard to do so, and AL terminators can wield storm shields without adorning them with salamander scales...
