adamantium_wang
Thanks for the likes and comments guys, helps keep my motivation puttering along. Took a few pictures of Squad Tacitus' plasma cannoneer: http://i.imgur.com/RGp7i1k.png He ended up going together rather well thanks to the aforementioned gaggle of magnets I used on him: http://i.imgur.com/G248UTn.png http://i.imgur.com/Cj20Uq6.png I wanted to put him together so he'd be useable in a game but easily taken apart so I could paint him properly. I'd tried pinning metal models like him before and they are an absolute nightmare to assemble normally, let alone in a way that could be easily broken down. Starting to drill holes for the pins lead me to consider just drilling holes for magnets instead, which ended up working much better. There is enough grab on them to hold things in place while I glued the left arm but enough give to slide things around to ensure a good fitting. I used 2mm round magnets for the wrist and the coolant feed and 3mm ones for the shoulder and back pack. All Marine backpacks take a 3mm magnet rather neatly where the connecting peg is with minimal work. Dude is quite sturdy; I can dangle him by the tip of his cannon and the whole thing holds together tightly. Now to paint him. http://i.imgur.com/3eUZjKm.png I like my plasma coils blue but there is more than enough of that on the minis as it is so I was trying to come up with alternatives. Green would seem the first choice but I wanted to use green for the glow on my bikers' grav guns and would like to keep the effects distinct. I was thinking of either going up to purple or down to orange. Any thoughts? Anyone have a preference for either/or? e: And as soon as I post this he snaps at the waist. That'd be right. MagicMan
You're a brave man using the metal Plasma Cannon! Those Metal heavy weapons have never fit properly.I've seen Orange work suprisingly well for plasma coils on Ultras. Or yellow. They're both good, strong contrast colours. You can get away with blue coils and blue armour if you go extra bright, though. adamantium_wang
"Have you ever seen what a bolt shell does to a person? Throne, have you ever seen a bolt? Come, sit here a moment and I shall show you the tools of my trade. These are the weapons with which I prosecute the enemies of Mankind and the armour that protects me from their spite. Here, my vambrace. Cool to the touch, is it not? Ceramite earthed and fired in the mines of Espandor and molded in the forges of Konor. Harder and lighter than steel and itself is proof against nearly all the personal weaponry of lesser warriors. Carried on an adamant frame and moved by artificial musculature that is connected through biological and technological marvels to be an extension of my own body and will. At my back is housed the stacked atomic chain that powers my plate and its systems. And pervading all is the honoured machine spirit that keeps me safe and allows me to kill as I please. All of these pieces were crafted by Chapter artisans to my specifications and are the nearly all belonging to the same suit of Mark VII plate presented to me upon my initiation. All save for my Ultima pauldron. This was worn by my Brother Telemach who fell against the cursed Eldar at Commrath. He and I came up together from the same intake at Iax and we fought in many campaigns together. I honour his memory and service these last ninety years by bearing his wargear into battle now that he cannot. I've been rather fortunate to have kept myself and my plate relatively whole. You see Tacitus over there? He bears his own Mark VI greaves and pauldrons, but you see his breastplate? That is an ancient piece dating back to the dark days of the Scouring. Second Sergeant Commodus bore it before Tacitus and Leto before him, and Xerxes before that. That plate has been handed down over generations of Astartes and forms a tangible link to our past, to our ancestors and to our beloved Primarch. That link reminds us of who we are, what we are to do. We fight all the harder to honour the memory of the honoured dead and the spirits of the wargear they bore." - Conversation with First Sergeant Ixion, 310978.M41 ----- The remainder of Squad Tacitus are base coated along with their ride: http://i.imgur.com/kepL0D8.jpg?1 I think I might try orange for the plasma at first. If that doesn't work I'll try out that bright blue that you posted, MagicMan. Either way it looks like I'll have to start playing around with OSL to make it look a bit more convincing, especially if I have to go really bright with the coils. Dosjetka
Or you could try purple. It also looks pretty damn good. Either way, I'm really liking your Ultramarines. They're rather simple, but they look good. That's something I've been trying to achieve for far too long and yet have failed. Perhaps I should invest into an airbrush, just to get those basecoats on smoothly and quickly, despite my revulsion with airbrush-style painting. adamantium_wang
Thanks mate, I'd definitely recommend an airbrush simply for the amount of time it saves. As you said you don't even need to be fiddling around with gradients, you can get a beautifully even coat over a small or large surface in seconds. I couldn't even consider doing vehicle base coats by hand any more. The time and effort versus the result you get is just incomparable. e: I just saw that you're doing Fists =] If you know someone that has one see if you can borrow it for a bit and try it out for your yellows. Just remember to varnish after you're done with your base coats so you don't end up accidentally rubbing your work off. adamantium_wang
Hey folks, thanks for the kind comments. Sorry for the gap between updates. I've been waiting on a few things to come in and been putzing around with some experiments that turned into failures. I'd placed an order for some 32mm bases for my infantry and while waiting for them to come in decided to try a technique I'd seen suggested on YouTube somewhere: Using watercolour pencils to highlight vehicles. I snagged a small range of blues and greys to try on a Rhino I had undercoated and got to work. While it was very easy to create edge highlights with them I had several issues with it: 1) The lines looked very very chalky and at odds with the paint highlights on the infantry, 2) They rubbed off very easily which necessitated nearly constant reapplication which led to 3) The pencils being just hard enough to scrape and chip my undercoat off the Rhino, even through the varnish I had applied Ah well. I can see some use out of it but for the time and effort I'm better off just using paint on a thin brush. Which I started to do but got quickly discouraged as I really don't enjoy painting vehicles, especially when I have infantry unfinished, which I didn't really want to work on until my bases came in. So I decided to take another tack and try out some Citadel Agrellan Earth on the bases I was going to be using for my bike squad with some cork for stones: http://i.imgur.com/cN8uYv8.jpg This stuff is basically cheating. I like the contrast in the cracks but things seemed a little flat. I ran some experiments on other bases to see if washing would add some depth to them: http://i.imgur.com/xFMGf6O.jpg Sorry for the blurry photo. I threw on some Devlan Mud and Gryphonne Sepia and left one alone as a control. The acrylic washes seem to completely overpower the colour of the base, so I think I'll just leave them be for the moment. In the meantime I thought I'd get to work on building a character I'd missed, Command Sergeant Marius Pullo: http://i.imgur.com/JNc8arh.jpg Needs some greenstuff under his arm and I'll either turn that shaved down tabard into mail or just cut it off and stick on some pteruges. Pretty pleased with how he's turning out, his hands are both magnetised so I can have him with a bolt pistol in the normal squad or slap a flamer on him whenever I include the company standard. The idea I'm running with is that while the First Sergeant is the most experienced sergeant in the company the Command Sergeant is the most decorated. Both of them have a role to assist the Captain but approach their job in very different ways with different duties and responsibilities that creates more than a little friction between them. Today the order arrived and I wasted no time getting to work. http://i.imgur.com/SC1iMXh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/VE5QvRm.jpg Immediately pleased with the results, the Marines look much more at home on the larger bases without their feet hanging over the edges. A couple of things to do: get some yellowed static grass to add to the dry broken ground and some bits to cut up and mount. Now that I have all this real estate I'll try to use it creatively. And, of course, a decision to make: http://i.imgur.com/zByo6n5.jpg Earth or black rims? E: I really need to get a proper lighting set up. the texture on the bases looks much more like the earlier photos than the washed out latter ones. adamantium_wang
Welp. Real life has gotten well and truly in the way and left me with little time for hobby work. Things seem to be calming down a bit so i finished off the combat squad I'd been doing and took some shots: http://i.imgur.com/q3co7nY.png http://i.imgur.com/zz7Mq9H.png http://i.imgur.com/Ox5Vj43.png http://i.imgur.com/RUluTml.png I think the tufts work on these bases. I was going to go for something darker but the yellow-green provides a bit of a contrast from the cool tones of the armour and the warmer base. The last marine doing a "Brother, Where's My Bolter?" act is waiting for me to get off my ass and buy some HH-era bolters that I'm going to scatter around here and there. I figure the Ultramarines probably still have a good amount of Heresy-era relics that see fairly regular use. I'm going to try and make some time to get to work on the other 5 next week and finish up the squad. adamantium_wang
Small update: Work on the second half of II Squad continues slowly but steadily. I have an order on its way here and thought I'd take a second to try and spruce up the Captain's Shield Eternal. I thought about using the combat shield from the Assault squad sprue as a basis for it but it turned out a bit to short, so back to the good old sergeant's storm shield it was. The 6th edition codex has this to say about the Fifth and Galenus' heraldry: http://i.imgur.com/gr0Befu.jpg Double-headed eagle with a roundel on it. I can do that. http://i.imgur.com/pE1C4Nb.jpg Bam. Simple but hopefully effective. adamantium_wang
Revisiting Galenus: I had a decent tax return this year so did what any responsible adult would do and blew a bunch of it on silly man-dollies. http://i.imgur.com/bbvGsNd.jpg http://i.imgur.com/LNFGE3D.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Wj8ElG5.jpg Just tacked together at the moment but so far I'm liking it. The Praetor model uses the MkIII plate which I love, is posed better and allows me to add better arms and use more modern pads. The V Company banner heraldry is repeated on his right pad (from the Sternguard kit) while the left is the ornate MkIII-ish pad from the new Ultramarine upgrade pack. What do you guys think? adamantium_wang
Small update: sadly the miniature photography isn't working out at all and I have to go back to the drawing board. For some good news I managed to get a game in last weekend where the painted squad performed admirably and helped to secure a razor-thin victory for the Ultramarines against their xenos opponents! They scrub up pretty well on the tabletop. http://i.imgur.com/guygmCf.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302778-wardens-of-the-eastern-fringe-an-ultramarine-blog/page/2/#findComment-4284833 Share on other sites
adamantium_wang
Hey guys. I've actually managed to be not entirely idle the last few months. A friend has convinced me to have a crack at a nearby 40k tournament and so I've been busy trying to get 1500 points up to a three colour minimum. This isn't the way I usually paint so its been a bit of a challenge to adapt, but I've been trying to do this in a way that looks good enough on the table but still lets me go back and detail them at my leisure. Blue and white airbrushed basecoats: http://i.imgur.com/r9AJOjC.png Agrellan Earth basing: http://i.imgur.com/PPqJm2A.png Chaplain and Storm Raven (with clear red tinted windows): http://i.imgur.com/8RfSlWr.png The lack of fine detail irks me a bit but I have to remind myself that they're a means to an end: being able to play games with them while still being able to snazz them up later. Over the long weekend I plan to block in the black and metallic areas of them all and maybe do the eye lenses if I have time. The list I'm building towards is: Chaplain w/ Crozius and bolt pistol Command squad w/ flamer, power axe Champion and Apothecary 10 man Tactical squad w/ combi-plasma, plasma gun and plasma cannon in a Rhino 10 man Tactical squad w/ combi-plasma, plasma gun and heavy bolter in a Rhino 10 man Tactical squad w/ combi-melta, meltagun and grav cannon in a Drop Pod 6 man bike squad w/ combi-grav and 2 gravguns 6 man Devastator squad w/ 3 grav cannons in a Drop Pod Storm Raven w/ twin lascannon and twin multimeltas Basically a Demi-company with air support that works with a standard FOC. Tournament is the 9th of March so I'm on track to have things passable by then.
