Frostmourne
Hi, As some of you know i have been pulling together a Templar List for the last few weeks to participate in a local 40k Narrative Campaign scheduled to last 6-10 months. Last one lasted 9. Today was "Lock in" day for peoples teams, and the Imperial Team filled up before i was Awake. I had a Facebook message from the Organiser saying he knew i hadnt made any purchases yet, would i be willing to switch ideas to a Chaos Legion, as he still wants a Legion invovled, and not have to make someone switch to the traitor camp and have Chaos Space Wolves or Iron Hands or anything. SO, i have top have a decision by the end of the day, has to be a Traitor Legion. Narrowed it down to a Death Guard Pride of the Legion or Reaping army. A Pride of the Legion Emp Childrens Army. Or a Night Lords Army using their RoW. Death GuardLove them in 40k, played them since 3rd edition. Love the idea of 2W termies, and lots of them, with PM for FNP. Heavy Support choices behind Aegis Line providing Fire support with some Ordanance thrown in. Emp ChildrenI LOVE the models, but the rules seem a little hit and miss, and not as brilliant against 40k armies, however Eidolon is a boss. This would be as many Phoenix Guard as possible with Eidolon and some Small Vet Squads. Mobile and zippy. Not a great fan of the jetbikes however. Night LordsLook stunning, have some fun rules. Sevetar is another Boss. 30 Terror Squad Marines with Volkite Chargers is sick. Raptors are cool. Problems i have are finding things to flesh the army out which fit the fluff, Alot of fear based rules will be waff in 40k meta, and painting them will be hard as. Any thoughts, ideas, inspiration, experience of playing against 40k with these armies?Im not Opposed to the other Legions by the way, Apart from SoH (As a local guy has a huge army, i like exclusivity, even though 30k isnt that prevalent around here) So any suggestions would be grand. Also, if this is in the wrong sub forum, i apologise. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302779-friday-morning-hobby-crisis/ Share on other sites
Castiel
Night Lords or Death Guard I think sound like the ones you are keenest on and both have some beautiful models. I'd probably go Night Lords myself, but that's because I saw the new Sevatar model yesterday :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302779-friday-morning-hobby-crisis/#findComment-3935781 Share on other sites
Frostmourne
Haha yeah i'll be honest thats what brought them into my view as well. I loved his rules, but his model is 50 shades of awesome. I think i would have most fun with them yeah. Chaeron
You don't see that many Heresy NL armies in comparison too - so might make a nice change! Slips
If you were to run PotL EC, you'd still preferably run Eidolon with Palatine Blades with/without Jump Packs and Phoenix Spears. I'd head down to the EC tactica Thread and ask around, they've got it figured out. PotL DG means you'll be fielding a LOT of Terminators and a LOT of Land Raiders. With how Maelstrom works, you might end up running these as Terminator MSU with Anti-Air (Contemptors / Dredeo). In a 2k list, having 3-4 Land Raiders means you probably wont be lacking in anti-armor. Its that or your running very few large squads in Spartans (at most 1-2) with Anti-Air. Less tactically flexible, however. Night Lords Terror Assault will be more Infantry Heavy (forced 3 Terror Squads) with a very limited motor pool (1 HS Slot). Look around the list building section, there are a few lists you could use as inspiration. Frostmourne
Thanks Slips, and yeah you are right on all three cases. And i would rather have Terminator MSU rather than a few large squads. Which in people oppinion would be more fun/ more competetive? DuskRaider
I play a Pride of the Legion Death Guard army... The Legion rules don't necessarily do much to improve Terminators... except maybe the Flamers (especially in ZM), but you're still a Fearless Terminator army that can't be pinned and pretty much walks up the board (or rides, depending on if you're fielding Spartans) and pulverizes whatever is in the way. I have a Spartan and love it so much I'm intent on picking up more, and honestly if you're fielding a Terminator heavy army you should be using them anyhow. Consider Primus Medicae in Cataphractii armor to ride with Terminators, there's nothing scarier than a bunch of 2+/4++ FNP Terminators. Also remember, Terminators can take Volkite as well. Deathshroud are terrifying for enemies in CCW too, so remember to take them... Grave Wardens are also a good anti-infantry choice, they fit the PotL theme. They're Heavy Support, but also get Spartans as Dedicated Transports. Frostmourne
The problem i have, is i have a budget of around about 500 pounds UK to spend on this project between now and March and has to be completed, Spartans are good, but i can only afford 1 really, any more is just too much. And i would rather not just use a LR as a Proxy. I think they would all be very fun to play, and very fun to create and paint, so thats a tick across the board. its more of the "Which would i find MOST fun to play"My worry with EC is that they will die to shooting. My worry with DG is that i wont have enough CC. My worry with NL is both. DuskRaider
They're Heavy Support, but also get Spartans as Dedicated Transports. if you play with pride of the legions, they are troops and/or elite choices, as per LACAL I thought only Elite Terminator squads were made Troops... Grave Wardens are Heavy Support. I'd love to hav them as Troops, though. You could run PotL without Transports, the only issue is that Cataphractii are S&P, which means you're not moving very quickly and the enemy will always be one step ahead of you. On short boards it's not as big of a deal, I suppose. I'll often throw in 2 squads of maxed Legion Tactical Marines just to soak up fire, run ahead and catch enemies before they can get away, or to spray an enemy unit with FotL. As far as your Night Lords, one thing to remember with Drop Pods is that you do NOT have to disembark the turn they come in... so they could, in theory, hide in the Drop Pod and try to ride out the turn they drop. Frostmourne
Yeah I dont think Grave Wardens can be troops to be honest mate, sorry. Oh, so, whats the benefit of just chilling in the Pod then? After doing some research, i have come to a few conclusions. DG seem to be easy to use, but maybe not..fun? EC seem fiddly as all hells, fun, but fiddly. And as i hate Jetbikes i may be nerfing myself by not using them? NL are awesome, but with 8/12 opponents having ATSNNF, it just seems silly.. Fire Golem
If you stay in the pod, you get an extra turn of safety before you can assault right? Slips
The reason for wanting to chill in a pod is having an AV12 Wall between you and their bullets. EC are especially great against low Leadership armies since their main deal is sweeping you after combat. They're also pretty flexible. DG are a Sledgehammer. Plain and Simple. Night Lords are that over-sized gore splattered Scalpel you see in horror games. Alpha Legion are a Rubik Cube that solves itself by making you solve it by solving you....I think? Raven Guard are the Scalpel. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302779-friday-morning-hobby-crisis/#findComment-3936192 Share on other sites
Frostmourne
So can you come down in a Pod turn 1, wait, then disembark turn 2 and Assault? No way?DG are pretty awesome, no lies. EC would look better on the table, but might wind me up with how "Fast" they have to be. NL i think i would do if i could find i list i like, i like Terror Squads all with Volkie and a few Dreads and Tanks bringing the rear. Ask them about it. They no more than I do. DG might be the "cheapest" force to build since Terminators and Land Raiders are Points Dense. You also got peeps like Aita for painting inspiration :p For the NL, head down to the Murderers Call and ask around; while I can help a bit, they know more of the specifics.
