The moment of no turning back

Emperor's Furor

Anyone else come upon this, what I mean by the title is when you purchase some models with the intent of doing a specific legion only for you at the last moment to reconsider your choice, I get this everytime, sometimes I overcome it but then later regret. At the moment I'm on the verge of doing Alpha Legion, have the Contemptor up and ready to be painted but I'm questioning it now.

Yep. I still haven't decided fully on what legion I want to be my main legion, and I have a SoH Contemptor, 5 Reavers, 10 Tactical Marines with SoH shoulder pads and a Primus Medicae, and sometimes I wish I'd bought stuff for a different legion. I think I'm gonna make a detachment of SoH to ally with whatever main legion I choose, and do detachments like that of other legions I also like.

But yeah. Not even just for HH stuff, I have loads of GW stuff that I'll probably never use spread between lots of armies both fantasy and 40k, stuff for 7 of 9 Infinity factions, 2 Malifaux starters from different factions, stuff from 4 warmahordes armies... I'm very indecisive :/

I faced this very feeling a few days ago. I've been planning my Imperial Fists force for the Battle of Phall for a while now. Made my lists, decided on my purchases, got my free shipping voucher ready.

Then as I went to call Forgeworld, doubt began to creep in. My true allegiance lies with the mighty First Legion. Would this prevent me from building up the force I want of Dark Angels? Won't this make it harder to do my Ultramarines vs Word Bearers forces? Am I really sold on Imperial Fists?

Yikes, heavy stuff. I re-read Crimson Fist and called yesterday morning to place my order. It's happening.

This means that Alan Bligh is doing his job well. Your wallet shall cry out in pain.

There is no hope, no time for peace. There's only spending.

I'm on the edge, I kind of like the Alpha Legion and I think there's more to come from them and some big surprises and they kind of work well for a small elite force which makes buying them easier, however I've also, ever since I was young, loved the idea of a space marine legion, not just a codex astartes force set in 30k but a big ass legion with banners and old style equipment. There's that sense though of "is doing something like that practical?" especially when you also factor in the ultramarine fluff isn't as exciting as the Alpha Legion fluff to me. Even until very recently I was considering the Raven guard cause I like Gav Thorpes books but I just don't enjoy painting black models, I want a bit of colour and blue is my go to colour.

I thought about this question for a long bit. The question, of course, being about which legion should I choose. I went with my "fluff-dar." When in doubt, I remembered that I wanted an attritional force; a challenging legion to paint; a bad guy group. These wants, nay, needs, kept me in the right direction.

Attritional warfare has always held me in its proverbial sway. Two forces grinding together, neither wanting to stop until everyone is dead or dying, fascinates me. Who does attritional warfare the best? Soviets (History majors, I will spar with you later over this...and win). They still do it to this day but in the guise of democracy. Battling over territory, making deals for the stabilization of their people, and then proper killing when they need to do so. In terms of Space Marine Legions that we know, how many excel at this (the killing part, of course)?

When I say challenging to paint, I don't mean taking a "leap for mankind" kind of paint job. It seems that my models are all painted similar: earthy, dirty colours that feature an off-white as an eye-pleasing standard. My Beastmen, for example, all have one colour in common. The Iron Hands force that has been produced by my hand utilizes it, too, and so do all of my Legions of Chaos. That colour is off-white. Well, the legion that chose me is covered in it (and every other piece of dust and grime in the galaxy). Here's the important part: they may be an "off-white" colour to everyone else but, to me, it is a huge chance to improve my painting skills and hopefully "level-up."

Looking the Emperor in the eyes, looking at Horus, shrugging, and then they keep their stare with Emperor whilst producing the "v" for Victory! on one hand and walking over to the traitorous cause. That's something fresh for me. For years, I've been loyal to the God-Emperor of Mankind. In 40k, I play The Imperium of Man. Yes, you read the correctly. I play all the "good mostly human guys." That's not to say a little Chaotic dabbling didn't take place when I was in college (I mean, who doesn't try it once?). So, for me, taking on these guys is going to really flip my noodle.

In a few weeks time, there will be a WiP Thread posted (and updated!) all about the Death Guard. I didn't foresee doing this either. This whole forum is new to me and, as I have stated in another thread, I absolutely love it. All the guys and girls here are so helpful, so ready to lend an eye, and will give you free advice so that you don't have to make a monetary mistake in screwing-up a model.

TL;DR? Well, aren't you the little rude grox? Seriously, men and women, go at it from this perspective and you'll find the correct Legion for you. The perspective? Oh, yeah! Here you go!

1. Choose that which pings on your "Fluff-dar" for ultimate background and start-up fluff.

2. Challenge yourself! Yeah, you'll have some set-backs. You may have a whole censored.gif ton of mistakes. Remember Saint Ross' words: "There are no bad mistakes, only happy accidents." Hail his holy name. Anyway, in the end, you'll have a whole new swathe of fancy painting skills and something great to show for your effort of "leveling-up!"

3. In which way have I not expressed myself through my art medium of choice? If you pick the "same ol' thing" then you won't be expressing yourself fully. Well, you are. It says "YOU'RE BORING!"

I hope this helps!
