Nova_chron
As the title says I'm thinking of starting a world eaters legion force this year and would love some input beyond the basic two tactical squads and an HQ. I tend to play heavily mechanized BA armies so something similar would be right in my wheel house. Looking for some advice from those more experienced with the legion on painting that white and thoughts on good places for chain axes because I do not like the FW ones Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302881-starting-world-eaters/ Share on other sites
Slips
! Your starting World Eaters and dont have badge: Yet?!?!? Fall in marine, and inscribe your company's glory and honor upon the Brass record! Also, within, you'll find more people in a position to aid you as well as here in the 30k section! http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/294527-gods-of-the-arena-world-eaters-glory-everlasting/ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302881-starting-world-eaters/#findComment-3937808 Share on other sites
Daemon2027
You don't need two tactical squads, there's assault squads and Breacher squads and some rite of wars allow other option like terminator or veteran squads as troops. That includes the red butchers. Â As for HQ there is a lot of choice thier to, although you will need a Praetor if you want to us a Rite of War. Â Welcome to the Heresy, choices are endless. Slips
For Starters, do you have the books? Getting to know what we can/cannot take as well as what differentiates us from 40k CSM/C:SM units is key to getting a firm grasp of 30k. If you have particular questions, we're here to help! Â Next, Do you plan on using a Rite of War? They Are: -Pride of the Legion: Terminators and Veteran Tactical Squads become Troops and either/or must fill you compulsory troops. Downside is you cannot take other Legions as Allies. Â -Orbital Assault: Everything HAS to take a Drop Pod or Deep Strike Capable Vehicle and Terminators can Deep Strike. No Fortifications everything HAS to start in a Vehicle. Â -Armored Spearhead: Land Raiders are Dedicated Transports, Tank Shock does a Further -1 to Ld, Everything has to fit inside a vehicles (you cant have more units than transport capacity) no fortifications. Â -Angels Wrath: Jump infantry gains Hit & Run, Storm Eagles are dedicated transports, no tanks, everything has to be in a flyer, jump infantry, jetbike or skimmer, no fortifications. Â ... Â These are just the Generic Ones but if you want to take one, even the Legion Specific, you'll have to take a Preator or Equivalent Character with "Master of the Legion" Â You can equally decide to not use one just as well. Â Decide on what you envision and we can work from there. jumping goat
Why don't you like the Forge World chain axes? They are very detailed and it's pretty easy to drill through hands to fit them in. I'm using them for my World Eaters army. I have been cutting off the spike on the end because it looks too fancy and wouldn't be practical. Slips
There are also, technically 3 Chain Axe sets: Â http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/The_Horus_Heresy/Legiones_Astartes/Space_Marine_Legion_Army_List/LEGION_ELITES/Legion_Terminator_Squad/CATAPHRACTII_POWER_AXE_SET.html Combi-Bolters though... http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Chaos/CHAOS_INFANTRY_AND_ACCESSORIES/CHAIN_AXES.html http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Space_Marines/Space_Marine-Infantry-and-Accessories/LEGION_PHOBOS_CHAINAXE_SET.html Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302881-starting-world-eaters/#findComment-3938164 Share on other sites
jumping goat
I have purchased a set of Sons of Horus reavers to spread through the rest of my army. The reavers chain axes are much thinner with very long handles, great for a bit of variety. The reavers helmets have a brutal World Eaters look to them. Â I think Rampager excruciator chain axes and terminator chain axes make good "count as" power axes for sergents, veterans, assault marines ect. Â I have been using the Forge World Death Guard painting guide for the white but giving it more White Scar on the final layer. Then very lightly drybrush with Leadbelcher. White 4x4s that have been roving through the bush don't look white, they look more like the colour of the Forge World Death Guard. Â I will post some pictures of my army when I have more done. Relict
Would this be the white you are looking for?  I've always considered unpainted ceramite to have a dull, slightly off-white color. The difference between the WE white and DG white is the wash.  http://s23.postimg.org/qk9ngrt6j/Full_Size_Render_1.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302881-starting-world-eaters/#findComment-3938877 Share on other sites
Nova_chron
I'm planning on getting the books this month (little red ones) and eventually will play around with rites of war initially I'm looking for a balanced list of assault heavy my biggest issue is I really like the idea of massive tactical/reaver blobs with vehicle support kinda like I envision the legion from reading betrayer. Sorry it took so long to get back this past weekend was busy what with turnin 24 and such. My birthday gift is the red books Would this be the white you are looking for? Relict
Weathering, you say?  Why, like these fine gentlemen who are most definitely mid-campaign (in the middle of a ferocious boarding action and hunting down the scattered Raven Guard survivors in the aftermath of the Dropsite Massacre, respectively)?  http://s24.postimg.org/xlpw70bg5/Full_Size_Render_3.jpg  http://s24.postimg.org/o2g7djnxx/Full_Size_Render_4.jpg  You know, I think the only reason the World Eaters used to wear white was so that bloodstains showed up better. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302881-starting-world-eaters/#findComment-3939779 Share on other sites

Allart01
In any Heresy era list, 20 marines are gonna be your minimal starting point. In a World Eaters "typical" list, which is to say "using the World Eaters row" you'll have to triplicate that number. Add Apothecaries to your blobs for durability, and some fire support - I personally love contemptor mortis. Nova_chron
Yeah I'm feeling big blobs of revers as the core... But what really gives the world eaters the flavor you know? That's what I'm after.... For my BA it is always the squad of death company spends the whole game dieing in combat but to Me there is no one unit that embodies the way I see the Blood Angels beter Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302881-starting-world-eaters/#findComment-3939873 Share on other sites
Relict
Some ideas (that I wish I knew when I first started my WE army):  - Instead of getting the standard Mark II/III/IV tactical squad kits, try mixing in some despoiler kits. They tend to be in more aggressive poses. I would spend the +2 points per model so each tactical marine has a bolter, bolt pistol, and CCW (which can be a chainaxe).  - The Rampager squad isn't fantastic crunch-wise. I think that particular kit would be better used if you parted it and sprinkled the parts among your tactical squads to give them some extra flavoring. The WE also have Legion-specific head and chest pieces - check those out.  - The Red Butchers are an excellent unit and if used correctly can really shine.  - World Eaters preferred firepower and speed above all else in their vehicles. The Spartan assault tank is THE go-to choice for getting a full Terminator squad into the fighting. Sicaran tanks are fast, powerful, and excellent for their point value.  - As for sprucing up your vehicles... Take a leaf from the (human hide bound) book of our Night Lord brothers. Put some trophies on them. Nothing too over the top (think the 40K Chaos Land Raider), but a few Loyalist helmets strung up on chains would look great. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302881-starting-world-eaters/#findComment-3939944 Share on other sites
Nova_chron
Thanks for those ideas Relict I saw a lot of the upgrade kits and I think after sprinkling some of the World Eaters helmets I'll have some loyalist helmets on chains. Grotsmasha
Khârn, you should get Khârn. The sculpt is pretty awesome, if you don't want to use him as Khârn you could run him as a regular Praetor...  Cheers, Jono Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302881-starting-world-eaters/#findComment-3940116 Share on other sites

Relict
A word about assault squads.  I know not many power players use them due to their point cost, but I think they are viable in a World Eater army. First, they fit the fluff quite nicely. Second, they can take melta-bombs. Those are probably the only useful melta weapons in 30K. Used correctly, they can be quite potent against enemy vehicles and walkers.  Besides, you can outfit all your assault marines with chainaxes free of additional point costs. This may not mean much against another Legion, but it is devastating against say, an SA or Mechanicum force. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302881-starting-world-eaters/#findComment-3940894 Share on other sites

Nova_chron
So I'm just wondering what do you guys think is a good starting purchase I was thinking 10 despoilers and a world eaters upgrade set. Relict
Well, first you need an HQ. I suggest buying Khârn himself and equipping him with Gorechild (the only constraint being that he can't have Gorechild if Angron is in the same army).  Cataphractii Terminators are a worthy investment. I recommend going one step further - get yourself the Red Butchers kit (five minis). If you like them, you can always get five more to make a full squad of ten with your next order.  Contemptor Dreadnoughts are likewise a very solid Elites selection. You should get the World Eaters one and outfit him with twin CCWs (either powerfist or powerclaws - they have different built-in weapons). This grants him an extra attack. Get just one for now. If you like it, you can either give him a missile launcher (good for softening up infantry before he closes to melee range) and/or get him two more buddies so you have a Contemptor Dreadnought Talon of three down the road.  For the Troops selection, I suggest taking advantage of one of the FW bundle deals. Get yourself 20 Legionaries in your chosen mark of armor. Outfit each with a bolter, bolt pistol, and CCW (you can either put those chainaxes in their hands or mag-lock them to their backpacks). Sprinkle in some WE-specific pieces to spice them up.  So that gives you an HQ, two powerful Elites, and two tactical squads for troops. Paint them and you will be ready for the tabletop. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/302881-starting-world-eaters/#findComment-3941825 Share on other sites
