The bases, in answer of a PM and dantay_xv. I've always done this last, with finished model attached- paint PVA glue onto the base (I use Elmer's Glue-All), add rough sand/small rocks, add fine sand/dust (took mine from smooth corner of a dirt road, and the fine stuff from runoff in my driveway after a heavy rain), let set for 15 min or more, paint glue over again, let set long time (over night), paint white with hint off blue (old space wolves grey, I think watered down 1:1 mix of Ceramite white and Fenrisian Grey would be comparable), fairly heavy dry brush white, that's mostly it. I did use some glue and snow flock on some areas, but after it dried fully you can't tell a difference unless right up on it.

The stumps- cut short piece of sprue, glue to temporary working surface (old juice bottle cap for me), line with that horrible product- Testor's Contour Putty (really, it's awful, but cheap so I still use it on everything), let it dry for a while (until not wet and sloppy, 15-45 min), then start pressing lines with hobby knife, the stuff will still bubble up and move around, butt retainers some impression and the folds compress and start looking like tree bark fairly soon. Let it dry/harden a few hors at least or overnight. Sometimes I base cote it white, some times I skip that step. Generally, I paint only with washes (agrax earthshade and nuln oil make a good gray). Snap it off and glue to base.

The big tree is a bunch of sprues of different lengths and was to big for that only wash technique to work so I did have to paint it gray with light wet brush and another wash or two to blend. The inside of the tree was all agrax I think.

Okay, not directly 40k work in progress, but thought I'd make a light box if I was going to be posting a bunch of pictures here. Everything I'll be doing is on the cheep, so cardboard box with holes cut out covered with parchment paper (bought some a while back for a wet pallet, and seemed like it would work to disperse light).

Procured from ebay, also on the cheap, chaos hounds Fenrisian Wolves. There are ten, but just a shot of before and after Testors, the horrible yet chaep (noticing a theme...), contour putty to give them more fur and cover horn holes and chaos body markings.

Well, -2.5 °F today so no spray paint for the wolves. Luckily I never have just one project going! So, more ebay, this time some poor SM Bikers have won the honor of becoming SW Bikers!

Simple Green bath for a day, scrub with standard issue weapons cleaning tooth brush and hit tough areas and recesses with tooth pics. I shoved the old bases in to keep the bikes from floating. Probably back in the bath a time or two again, but we'll see.

Well, you never know for sure what you're going to get from ebay.

I've done this plenty, but the paint normally comes off more in pieces rather then fading away like this. Maybe they were airbrushed or had a different kind of paint. The biker came off of one bike, and the other started dropping pieces as I scrubbed away. Guess I'll put the big pieces back in the bath and see what happens tomorrow.

photobucket is being a bucket of something other than photos and won't let me resize this, but...

Since that didn't take too long, I thought I'd put together a heavy bolter turret I could use on a razorback (I had bought razorbacks when I needed rhinos, made a couple las/plas and the rest has been waiting years for me!). Anyway, I got a day off and I think I'm going to figure out how to put one of these bad boys on this soon to be repurposed missile toting space marine Wolf (surprisingly, he was not acquired from ebay, but I did buy him of a local Dark Angels player). If I can't figure something out I'll go for the scout HB.

Still too cold for spray paint and likely will be for a bit. I think we got up to 0 °F for a high. Not much progress on the bikes, but after looking at the pictures enough came off I'm bathing them again.

My new HB LF, is coming along however.

I try not to use the Dremel, but needed to get the missile launcher off his shoulder. Cleaned it up and took the squad iconography off with the knife. I guessed I could keep the wires working back into the shoulder pad, so that stays. The the missile trigger and handle assembly I'd have to mount right behind the belt for the HB, so I removed some circles there for a flat surface. I also had to shape the cooling fins behind that to match the lay of his arm.

Next, I try to see where the other hand is going to fit by positioning pieces. It helps to have some poster tack available to temporarily hold some pieces together as you check how they are going to align with others.

After this I see I'm going to have to cut into the female slot originally intended to join with the other HB. After I did this, I didn't like how static the belt seemed. I was thinking of finding some way to link it in with a belt and backpack for the TDA assault cannon, or replace the hole thing- but decided against it. I heated a cup of water up in the microwave, dunked the belt in for a bit, took it out, bent it slightly, and repeated until it looked like I wanted. This ended up changing the fit and I had to play with it awhile. I ended up needing to cut all of the slot away, save for the farthest forward wall. I also trimmed the half circle barrel portion of the missile launcher away from the targeting system and left hand.

I had to do some more cleaning up of the marine model. I cut away most of his pouch to allow the belt to wrap nearer the body. The last thin I had to do was trim a little off the left wrist on the model and the gun so they'd fit snugly in the slightly more oblique angle I found work best for the HB.

The belt wraps neatly up to the back pack mount and will be covered up nicely with a piece of wolf bling or putty.

He's not glued yet, still using the poster tack in that shot. The belt is touching most of his upper leg and the gun itself will be in the way for painting/washing. So... shelved with the wolves until it gets above freezing and I can spray paint the base coat.

I'm done trying to strip the bikes as well, and they to are ready for the self to. I got enough paint off that I doubt any detail loss will be noticeable and I cleaned up the mold lines. I might try to pop at least one of the heads off yet (to replace with a Space Wolf one).

Thought I'd make another HB conversion with the scout one I've had laying around for years. I cut the tubes of the bottom and the hand off the back. Standard bolter toting power armor arms for reference.

That was about it, put HB where bolter would go. I did shave a slight angle on the HB where it would link up with the trigger hand.

The only problem is you are going to have to use a shoulder pad with a notch in it like the one pictured here, as the HB butts right up where a full pad would be.

Been inspired by some of the fluff writers around here and have been working on my own. That, and I put together a land raider, has kept my hobby time away from here. I did keep the sponsons and add-ons off the land raider until I get all the other options I want to have available to magnetize, and will probably post that here at a later date.

So this is a handy way to make bases heavier. I first did this with steel shot liberated from shotgun cartridges, but ammo is expensive nowadays, and sand should suffice. Simply fill bottom with sand, top with lots of PVA glue, wait a long time. I did these yesterday and was still able to push the few larger rocks that kept the base from sitting flush into the sand/glue.

It is supprising how much something simple like this speeds up game time, not having to pick up top-heavy models falling over in movement or piling in/removing casualties in assaults. Plus, then you can give models huge unwieldily heavy bolters!

Yes, thanks for pointing out the nickel trick. I think they're done now after a few days, but why rush back to them with so many other half-done projects sitting around, and more to start! Since I got some bits in the mail, I'll try magnetizing some models backpacks to be swappable for jump packs. I got 2 sets, standard assault jump packs and some vanguard veterans jump packs. There is a lot less clean up of mold lines and such with the vanguard set and they also had less of a gap between the two halves when put together. The assault ones had huge enough gaps I thought I better try something:

http://i1281.photobucket.com/albums/a514/rgrmaddog/image_zps69gkumpr.jpg

I ran my beloved Testors putty down the sides and glued the top and bottom.

I let them dry a good while, half hour or so, then ran the knife down the side to remove the excess. The rest was what I could remember from a video I think I found here, but could not find. Magnets go in the top of the jump pack slot. On the model you cut half the backpack stud off to make room for the hole you need to drill and keep a guide post for whichever pack he'll be wearing.

And you are done:

It's up to you!
