It was probably these videos; I used to keep a link to them in my signature block:

Hopefully these two links will work.  This two part tutorial on how to magnetize infantry models was especially helpful to me.

Okay, here's the Ulrik I'm doing for our one modle challenge. Yes, I tried to stick as much crap on him as I could. Try to guess where it's all from and then check the spoiler to see how you did!

Don't worry about the blue green stuff, it's just holding him together to check how it all fits.

@Argyle: Yes, painting will be a challenge. Good thing it's for a painting challenge!

@Ulfgrim Alvsbane: I hope so, my painting is getting better, but I still take a long time to get results that others here seem to knockout in an hour or two. Thanks for noticing an area I could improve- there are so many little things you can miss when doing a complicated project. I thought I caught the last one when I noticed I never trimmed the mold lies on the backpack.

Okay, so here he is, the completed kit-bashed Ulrik for the painting challenge. This was my first attempt at black armor, and I think it worked out well so here is a quick rundown of what i did:

Spray paint, black. Watered down Eshin Grey base, concentrating on flat areas and keeping out of recesses. Asurmen Blue wash everywhere. 50/50 Eshin Grey/White Scar broadly hitting all areas of highlight. Asurmen Blue wash same areas. White Scar more precise highlight, but still hitting everywhere but the upper legs. Asurmen Blue wash. Cleaned up some areas with odd transitions or uneven highlights with touches of white scar and another wash until happy.

He was not all put together throughout this, that would have been exceedingly tedious. I was going to write up more on each part, but by the time I was done with everything I have only a vague recollection of what happened! Lets just say it was a lot of back and forth, try this, try that, oh that looks good, move on to another piece, come back to the first, etc.

I do like this Crozius Arcanum, but couldn't get the effect I was going for- if I can't keep myself from touching him up a bit more I'm starting back here.

In addition to all the parts in the crazy chart picture, I also used the chain I cut off the Crux Icon and attached it the the ruby and chain section of a second Crux Icon (which was removed) to suspend the knife from his belt. It worked out very well, but was a pain to paint and position all those tiny pieces.

That's enough from me for now. Comments, criticisms, and questions welcome.

Looks really good Maddog. That crozius is constructed very well. Most kitbash /scratchbuilt ones just end up looking like what they are....parts thrown together. That one really has a proper look to it. The knife on chain is great also. I can imagine a lot of cursing took place cutting and gluing that together... no fingers stuck together?

That pose... for myself anyways (not sure if it was intent or not) really makes me feel hes at the fore front chanting his brothers into a frenzy.

Painting is well done but it is here I have to pick on you for one thing...and I hate doing it lol. That gun barrel! If you dont have a drill bit of proper size it would really benefit from a dot of pure black and a highlight around the rim to convey depth. Other than that great job. I dont envy the task of picking out that many details!

I was going to start drilling my barrels, I've got the little hand drill for my magnets that I've become quite proficient with, however, my smallest bit was too large. I have to go buy a smaller one, and if you've been reading this thread you have some idea how cheep I am! If you or someone out there can tell me the size, that will be one less excuse I can use to keep from buying one :)

Hey I know exactly how you feel. I hate dumping more money into this hobby with how much I'm already spent/spending on models alone! I have seen paint used to effectively create the illusion of a hollow barrel. Worth a shot.

If you do decide to grab some I use a 1mm, 1.5mm or a 1/16th" bit. If used just for plastic barrels they will last a life time. If you start drilling pewter you will have to replace them from time to time. Heres a not bad deal on CMON from Army Painter https://www.coolminiornot.com/shop/tools-and-misc/hobby-tools/the-army-painter-hobby-drill-bits.html.  You can probably find a better deal but that was the first one I found through a company I recognized the name of.

Definately! I picked up my 1/16" bits at a home depot for about a buck a piece. They work but have little room for being off center at all. The only place I could find the smaller 1mm or under bits were hobby stores and they are a touch pricier. Maybe able to get smaller than 1/16th at a hardware store in your area I just wasnt able to in mine. Look for 3/64" or 1/32".

R_P_R said "all the cool kids are bumping their WiP threads" and I didn't want to miss out.

As I've said in other threads, I ran out of steam while running into difficulties with some TWC models I was putting together. The forum challenge and some help from fellow brothers here got me going again, but I am still avoiding those TWC (well, I sit down at my work table and look at them for a half hour before I pick up my iPad and check out the forum again!).

I thought maybe some fluff writing would help me, as I've neglected that side of the hobby for some time. Of course, it's because I've been inspired by several of you. I'm no master of fluff by far, so it's taking a little time putting together events and back stories, but it's brining an entire new element of the game to me, so thank you all and here's a beginning.

It is Time

Harsh winter winds assailed the frozen and rocky land scape as a gray sky concealed the precise location of the Wolf's Eye. There was no movement, even the snow wished not to drift in the frigidness, forming a layer of ice across its its now united surface. Oort Allslayer, the Raging Wolf, who had come to watch over Ragnar Blackmane's Great Company, peered across the vast still oceans of white and rock. His eyes, a frozen blue, consumed all he surveyed and returned only a vacant smoldering to those brave enough to stare into them. He yearned for the return of "the Young King"; to no longer be burdened with the yoke of leadership over the "Gifted One's" Great Company while Ragnar, himself, continued his great hunt. It was nearing a decade since Ragnar departed in search of further honor and glory, and years since his last contact.

Oort maintained his gaze over the Asaheim mountains as footsteps broke the snow behind him. Soon the familiar sent of metal, flesh, and fire washed over him as his half-brother Ockham approached.

"It is time." beaconed Ockham. The words fell from his metal lips, clanking upon each other in the air.

"Even in the dead of a Fenrisian winter, you smell of summer. Not long away from the Isles of Iron and your lava forge?" The contempt woven within these words was not judgmental, but a reflection of their rivalry. A slight against Ockham Ironfangs, who had been separated from his lower jaw, right arm and legs before the Iron Priests recast him.

"Not long; and they are not my forges, but a task I was bequeathed when the need arose and I was best suited to fill it. Not unlike your current roll," countered Ockham with the same tones of brotherly disrespect. It was only a few centuries ago Ockham and Oort had left the long hall of their tribe together in the company of a Sky Warrior. They had fought and drank without peer that night. Oort, because it was his nature, and Ockham, because he had always been in competition with his brother- only one season his senior.

"You are truly... a great bastard," stated Oort through a rare smile as he broke his gaze and turned to embrace his brother. A stoic expression returned to his face before acknowledging "It is time."

Getting ready for ETL. I still don't know what I want to do exactly with my TWC, but know I'm going to need some cool weapons! So here is my Krakenbone sword for Oort and 2 long thunder hammers, at least one for Ockham (the other may be an additional IP, or HQ, or regular TWC). TWC dude there for scale.

Okay, I had to pick up some files to clean up the mold lines on my old metal models. They've been sitting around forever waiting for me to do that before painting, and figured ETL was the best chance to motivate me to get it done.

Since I was buying stuff at the hardware store, I finally picked up a 1mm drill bit for those barrels, Argyle, and the 1/32 collet my hand drill would need to hold it.

http://i1281.photobucket.com/albums/a514/rgrmaddog/image_zpshsxct8ff.jpg

So, filing mold lines and drilling barrels is all I got done today, but I wanted to include this pick for anyone out there needing some reference to make the jump.

Written between primer and base coats:

More Army fluff. No one seemed to care for it written as a story, so I'll get most of it out. This will also be easier than matching all the specifics I would need to. What it was time for, in the first fluff post, was a gathering of Grimnar's war council to determine if Ragnar should be replaced having been gone so long. Ultimately, Oort would continue leadership under the watchful eye of Ulrik. This would allow me, fluff wise, to field my models already painted with Ragnar's iconography, my own Wolf Lord, with IP, and Ulrik.

The council meeting would also frame the tails of Oort's and Oakham's backstories. Oakham, my IP, lusting for glory gets so nearly killed as a blood claw he ends up back at the Lava forges for serious augmentation. During his recovery, the kraken hatch that kills many priests and elevates Arjak to the his current position commences. With so many IP's dead he is asked to ingest their brains and learn their trade. I thought this a fitting and fluffy way to get my warrior IP.

Oort, his lust for glory and honor dulled by the near loss of his brother, nonetheless continues to be propelled through the ranks due to his remarkable talents with sword and bolter. His pack, however, is eventually wiped out, further isolating him. He remains a Lone Wolf for the vast majority of his years. It is only after being recognized several times by Ragnar, that he can no longer refuse a promotion to his wolf guard. Shortly thereafter he is again promoted as Ragnar asks him to lead in his stead while on a solitary mission.

Oort knows his saga is written in the blood of his brothers, and would seek no more glory could he choose. As such, victory is paramount under his guidance. This virtue, calling for tactics and resolve, is mistaken for cowardliness and he is called to Grimnar's attention, thus further necessitating the war councils inquiry.

I thought this a good backstory for my Army, allowing me to forego a headlong rush into battle should I so choose, while echoing a bit of my own apathy for war.
