Stoic Raptor
That's immaterial to the fact that the Wolf Lord's successor is chosen by and from his Wolf Guard. Space Wolves being what they are, do you think any of them would rather be a loner than command the Company? The best way to avenge your fallen Lord is with 200 screaming Wolves at your back, not to sulk off on your own. Regardless, even if you know you wouldn't be selected, there's the obligation to help select the new Lord. Let's stop thinking of Wolves as 21st-Century humans who sulk and pout when things don't go their way. These guys are a lot more fierce and vengeful than some people are giving them credit for. Lone Wolves are the exception, rather than the rule. Do you think any of them die old and in bed? Of course not - each and every one of them expects to die in battle some day, and none of them wants to be the first to fall. Each and every one of them intends to be the last one standing. The longer one lives, the more likely he will be the last of his pack. Logan Grimnar was once a Blood Claw - and it's a certainty that all of his pack has fallen before him. Just because your pack leader or Lord dies, doesn't mean you feel responsibility for his death. Remember, the leaders are supposed to be the best warriors of them all - if Krom falls beside most of his Guard, I don't think his remaining Guard would have these human feelings of guilt. Any Wolf Lord who'd select someone prone to guilt-ridden self-flagellation is going to die soon enough anyhow. It's a lot different to lose the pack that you were inducted with - the people who survived the Blooding alongside you, who drank with you from the Cup of Wulfen, who were elevated from Blood Claw to Grey Hunter and maybe to Long Fang... that's like losing everyone in your nuclear family. I think the Wolf Guard are surely the most hardened, battle-scarred soldiers in the entire Company. It's as certain that all of them have seen some of their packmates fall in battle - one does not achieve great valor with no risk - so I'm unconvinced that most of them would go Lone Wolf if their Lord died. marvmoogy
Well, one of my Lone Wolves has a back story of exactly what I wrote - he is the only surviving member of the last Lord's retinue and bears the responsibility for his death. He is now unleashed as a furious weapon of vengeance to being to justice those who killed his previous lord (so I have decided I only play him against Eldar). I guess this is one of the great things of our hobby....everyone is entitled to their own opinions to fluff and no one can be 'wrong' for having an opinion that differs from someone elses Afterall, it would be a very boring place if we were all the same. Stoic Raptor
Absolutely - that's cool. Forging the Narrative is an underlying principle of the game. It's certainly not an impossibility, I just feel that it's the exception rather than the rule. And I think the one thing we can all agree on is that Lone Wolves are pretty cool - and one of the great unique units in our faction.
