Bit Boxes

Recommended Posts

I'm at the point where I've accumulated enough GW 40K items that a plastic baggie is no longer getting it done as my bit box. So who's got the best bit box, and what is it? A tackle box for fisherman? A box for screws and stuff from a hardware store?

I want a box where I can separate out my bits into categories- chest, legs, pistol, melee weapons, rifles, backpacks, jump packs, etc.

For 40K and similar games, I keep loose parts for figures in a set of screw drawers like these:

Complete sprues that still contain a lot of parts (or big ones), I keep in a Land Raider box, together with loose parts for vehicles. You could use multiple boxes to keep things organised — one for Space Marines, one for Orks, etc. — or just throw everything into a single box, depending on your preference, available room, etc.

I used plastic bags for ages, but eventually it got a bit ridiculous; then my girlfriend got some plastic drawers from Muji to store her makeup, and I realised I could do the same! They're absolutely brilliant, save a lot of space and everything is nicely categorised in little boxes, which makes it a hell of a lot easier to find what I'm looking for; plus I don't lose anything from bags splitting. Well worth investigating.

I had the good fortune when I moved into my aunt's old house of finding a craft/shop drawer unit. 4x4 drawers, each 1"x1"x3" with 2 dividers per drawer. A quick label and my bits have a nice place to sit with their similar buddies.

...now if only I could find a similar set-up for all the larger bits/still-on-sprues/boxes.

A baggie? Just one?

I have used the parts trays or tackle boxes like you see fly fishing lures kept in but some bits are always too large. The same for those stand up nut and screw bins. Spare Daemon Prince Wings just wont fit in those.

What I have now (and I like it so far) is a nested system. Bits go into small bags according to what they are. All the left over heads go in one, pistol arms in another, etc. Those go into larger quart sized bags with one unit type per bag. Those are then put into a large model box according to the army which are usually the Battalion force boxes. Finally, those boxes are kept in a file cabnet along with any molds, special bases or what not that were used when building the army.

That's most of the stuff at least. My Sisters of Battle are kept in a small tuperware type box that you would use to pack a sandwich for lunch with. Ths is lined with foam and keeps the few metal models safe and snug. The rubber molds, cast bases, wax stamps and other things related to the army have their own storage bin but I actually have very little in the way of SoB left overs. Its going to be that way with full metal models. I don't bother keeping the vehicle icons since I just make more as I need them.

Plano offers a great bitz box. They are used for tackle, screws, or anything really. I guess they didn't know what the best use for them is. Anyway, they come in clear, non-pourous plastic that won't damage your bitz over time (gaseous tinting and the like). They are ~4.80-15.00 USD.

My wife gets mine usually at Wal-Mart. Also, Bass Pro Shops online carry them. For an alternative, buy some of their in-house brand and save some cash. From what I can tell, they are the same as anyone else's clear, plastic boxes.

Here's a link to what I'm talking about: http://www.basspro.com/Plano-Double-Side-StowAway-Utility-Boxes/product/74077/

If you're worried that you can't get to the bitz on the bottom of the sections, build less or buy more boxes.

I mostly don't take things off sprues until I'm ready to use them,

Though I do have a bitz box for all the parts where I've changed my mind on whether to use them. It's just one of the sectioned-off plastic containers that the old metal squads used to come in.

I use one of these:

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Stack-On-39-Compartment-Storage-Cabinet-DS-39-12/100023878

Cheap, plenty of room, and so many bins to divide things into.

That's actually the exact thing I use to sort my bits. Give plenty of space to divide up the different types of parts (Marine arms, backpacks, special weapons, close combat weapons, Tau bits, drones), plus the larger bins at the bottom are great for storing the extra vehicle bits, although one of them got dedicated to exclusively bases. Never realized quite how many of the bloody things I accumulated...
