How you know you have picked the right Legion

Salamanders were essentially just an extension of my 40k army, which I started with codex Armageddon. The chance to actually paint and field vulkan was too much to pass up. On top of that I just love the legion - they are honourable and humanitarian, but have an inner rage and outer brutality. They have a tribal look, and a stunning aesthetic. They are endlessly punished, but remain loyal to the last. They get very little glory, but don't require or desire it, and remain widely respected by other legions. Vulkan is one of the strongest, and potentially brutal primarchs, but also the most human and desires least to be a warrior (bar Lorgar). I also like green.

I know all of the other legions are awesome in their way, but I'm very happy with my boys. If I ever did anything else I think it would be a pre primarch crusade era force - something almost free of restrictions, with lots of fluff freedom. Dusk raiders always interest me. But, this is a long way off!

You'll know because it'll just click into place in yer brain. Now, I did something either incredibly smart of incredibly stupid, (time will tell) where the story I came up with for my VIII Legion Crimson Sons lets me add little bits of other Legions here and there as scattered pockets of loyalists join up with them. That way, if some new shiny thing comes along that I really want, I don't have to worry about trying to fit a square peg in a round hole as far as the fluff goes to include them.

LotD helped me decide on 40K over a different table top wargame. Of course, I quickly realized I couldn't field them alone, so decided to run them with Fire Hawks (fitting). Chance meeting with a fellow 40K newcomer at a second hand book store put Salamanders on my radar. Got sucked in, and haven't looked back.

The clincher was, during the summer, having to take care of some bag worms nesting in a tree behind my house. A saw, a little gas and a lighter later I realized a fire-based chapter was the right choice.

I have 3500 points worth of World Eaters. :P

I enjoy the lore about the World Eaters during the Horus Heresy. They may have degenerated into Saturday morning cartoon villains by the time of 40K, but they were an interesting Legion with an evolving history during the time of 30K. Besides, they were there when the first blow of treachery was struck at Isstvan III and they would be there to see the curtains fall at the Siege of Terra.

Then there is the possibility of getting a model for Daemon Prince Angron as soon as Book VI comes out... :D

Unlike 40k, where I can pick a chapter/force of my own design and then use counts as, in 30K i'm bound to use particular tactics according to the legions. I loved he Alpha Legion, and always have done since I saw the Terminator in the old Index Astartes, but the Ultramarines are rapidly looking awesome, and I'm still having a love in with Daemons and the Word Bearers, while I'm sure when the White Scars become available, I'll be dipping into the Bikes.

And lets just hope that they don't come out with things like Feral Orks in the meanwhile with Cyboars. I'll be on them like a fat scottish lash on deep fried chocolate coated bacon wrapped sticks of lard.

I change my mind so much, but there are 2 I ussually swing back round to, Alpha Legion and Raven Guard, basically my favourite chapter and chaos warband. I should probally just work on them, they both appeal to me in terms of character and style.

I don't think I'm ever going to pick sad.png

NOT WITH THAT ATTITUDE YOU WONT! NOW SIT DOWN AND PAINT ME 50!

I don't know how to change my attitude though haha.

Go talk to your Chaplain. Sounds like you need more [rightEOUS ZEAL] and [FURY OF THE EMPEROR].

There's a consul for that.

But painting up some test marines is a great way to get a feel for hwo they look on the table. Can inspire you. Worst case you use them for Alpha Legion for the rewards of Treason RoW.

[JUST AS PLANNED INTENSIFIES]

I didn't choose a Legion, I chose Legions.

I envy those people who only like one Legion in particular, and dedicate themselves to that one Legion. Even if it's just because they only have a budget for one. I cannot choose just one.

The Vaunted First has a special place in my heart, due to my love of Chivalric Knighthood, and medieval times. Plus, Space Knights man, Space Knights.

The Stone Seventh because sieges appeal to me, I've always found them interesting. The particular force that I've been building up is a siege breaker army, with lots of breachers and trench-clearing flamer squads. And vindicators. And thudd gun rapiers.

The Murderous Eighth, three letters. A.D.B.  The Eighth will always be my main, even if I am taking a small break from them.

The Exalted Sixteenth, I only plan on doing a small force of these guys, simply because I love the Reaver models and rules. Plus, Horus.

The Unholy Seventeenth, the complete underdog. The Bearers were not one of my favorites when I began looking for Legions to get into, and after reading The First Heretic, I liked them even less. Lorgar, the whiny primarch with daddy issues. But as character development went on, Know No Fear, Betrayer, Mark of Calth, the Word Bearers began growing on me. Plus, add in FW's amazing metallic red color scheme. Likewise, Lorgar's model I hated at first, but now it's probably my favorite Primarch model so far. So simple, so regal, so epic.

The Mystical Twentieth. What can I say here? I'm Alpharius.

Unlike 40k, where I can pick a chapter/force of my own design and then use counts as, in 30K i'm bound to use particular tactics according to the legions.

Better pray the artist formerly known as Heathens doesn't see this, as I'm sure he's tired of reiterating the fact that you're not limited in any way, shape or form when it comes to legions and the tactics you use. In a legion of 100k+, you didn't have just breachers, or just tactical, or just assault. Just because a force excels at something, doesn't mean they are pigeonholed into that one role. If so, they would be ridiculously easy to counter.

For a real world example, my beloved USMC was intended to conduct mostly expeditionary/amphibious operations, but I guarantee you the insurgents who held Fallujah or Marjah wouldn't call them bad at extended ground warfare.

Good advice, but that wasn't what I was getting at. I can't really pick up and start painting my World Eaters Green and Yellow with Griffons Rampant as their heraldry, as that's "not 30k", that's a counts as using the rules; in 40K that's "allowed", but if I'm collect Dark Angels, I should largely expect to be painting in DA colours. I don't have ~700 unknown chapters with which to base my background within, I have 18 finite chapters with which to base my background and colours on. While there were undoubtedly Iron Hands Wrath of Angels formations (and it's actually a very strong force, strangely), the background for the force itself isn't as free as it usually is. It's like "forcing" 40K players to choose between the 9 1st founders.

I picked the War Hounds for a number of reasons:

- They have a certain mystery about them

- I really liked the old World Eaters before this Forge World retcon, so the War Hounds were like the World Eaters of old to me

- Their symbol is cool

- They have the colour scheme of the Epic World Eaters which harks back to Rogue Trader where it all started for me.

They may be simple reasons, but they keep you going when you see a tonne of blue to paint and no end to it...!

-stuff-

You're certainly allowed a little "variation on a theme." We've been given all kinds of avenues in the fluff to make of our armies what we will. We've even got future second founding chapter heraldry on display in the HH books. You want loyalist traitors or traitor loyalists? Easily done. Different heraldry? Piece of cake. Different color schemes? Easy as pie, just look at the examples in the books and even here on the B&C. As a last resort, for those few who really want to branch out, Forgeworld gave us the two lost legions to run wild with.

If that's not enough, and you want lime green Howling Griffons with World Eater chapter tactics and an Ultramarine special character... well then, you're honestly better off in the land of 40k.

*note: I used the pronoun 'you' in a very general sense. The above is not meant to tell you specifically to go back to 40k.

When you remember for the longest time that you absolutely hated the idea of bile putrid snottyness infesting the game world of your clean mean fighting space marines with a passion, especially with the cross over from fantasy feeling so very incompatible - the simple ugliness of sickly green and disgusting creatures - men turned to nothing more than an infested carcass of chaos infused plague disassociated from anything remotely human.  (seriously, if you had asked me just before 3rd ed came out what I thought of Nurgle, I would have put them bottom of my go to list for armies since I couldn't relate to them at all, that and I hate painting white)

...and yet... the mysteriousness of those spiked-helmeted marines trudging through the trenches and across the open fields, bolters in hand, sometimes with the googly eyes of some early warfare gasmask, reminding me of our own fascinating history, finally won me over and had me looking for the fluff to take in like some History channel documentary. (this was about the time FW made the DG torso models)

The Death Guard fluff, their founding and history from chapter approved, had me gripped from the start.  I don't like what they became, but as history reads it wasn't a choice for most of them.  From my understanding they were once men tried and tested in warfare and without the snobbery associated with those who like to keep their metal polished in bright colours.  The fact that through their own written history I have been won over enough to purchase both a 30k and 40k army says it all to me.  They aren't Mr Awesome with the flashy new speeder bike and golden wings, they are the soldier doing what they do best with an unyielding determination that doesn't stop to wipe mud from his boots.

That and they have the coolest looking Tart'inators so far :)

TL:DR - When you now own a 30k+40k army of the same legion, even though you once hated them with a passion.

For a real world example, my beloved USMC was intended to conduct mostly expeditionary/amphibious operations, but I guarantee you the insurgents who held Fallujah or Marjah wouldn't call them bad at extended ground warfare.

Semper Fi, devil dog!

You know, what LongGone said and has been saying about "variations" has my brain doing a happy dance. A blurb, if you will:

A squad of Death Guard Seekers sent to kill a particular consul set off with orders to get the job done, regardless if they survive or not. Man can I dig that! Just think: waiting in no man's land for months, watching your brother legionaries fight the good attritional fight. They lay dying, festering in the hot sunlight as the enemy crush the last life from them, their line on a map moving towards your equally unimportant line. Then, when they sit around and gloat about what they have done, you strike. Bolter rounds slamming home with a crack and wet thud as they explosively snuff out lives of the true traitors. Amidst the chaos, the target comes into view: resplendent in a crown of horsehair. All it takes is one shot and he dies, choking on what should be sustaining his life. It is a sweet irony as you're torn apart, Veterans hacking you apart with any number of power weapons. All that matters were the orders and, the best part, you fulfilled them.

Alright. I'm off to go write some fluff. Cheers!

Man, there's some outstanding posts in here.

I chose the HH Night Lords for several reasons. ADB got me, along with so many others, with his writing prowess in several of his novels. Moving me to both love and pity their character and what they are/have become.

Another was that although I ALWAYS have played loyalist chapters In 40k I wanted something with a more renegade feel that wasn't actually a CSM army. I run my Night Lords as Pre-Isstvan so they're still, in my opinion, "loyal".

That being said when DA finally get rules/models I will undoubtedly begin to collect and build a force based on my first love in 40k!

I'm super touchy with my painting which is the biggest problem with my choice of legion, if I'm not happy I can paint them to a standard acceptable to me then they are off the table, which is a real pain as it means a lot of my favourite things fluff wise are off the table :(
