TDAWG army - suggestions and thoughts

As of late I have stepped away from my beloved Dreadnoughts and Heavy Armor and have looked at one of our lesser used units, TDAWGS, as a army basis. Is a TDAWG based army worthwhile? Will it need to be mixed up with Thunderwolves and other things for maxixmum effectiveness? I was thinking of making some wolf claw/ ss TDAWGS and just got done making a 5 man combi-plasma bomb group with shields and chain fist and wanted to know what everyone thought of this idea.

Personally i think that Termies currently are just not worth it.

What you get for the points just does not cust the mustard.

Look at a TWC, 12inch move, 2 wounds, plus 1 wound, plus 1 toughness, rending and move through cover. Hammer of wrath I think too?

For 7 less points you get a terminator. Rally no comparison at all. they are way over cost for what they are. This is why they do not get used alot and you dont see them in Winning comp lists.

Personally we home rule that TDA give +1 wound to the profile.

Yeah must admit I'm in agreement with Spazmonkey. I really, really want TDAWG to be good. I've got about 20 and would like to field them but they really don't seem to be viable. For what you get there are much better options and though a 2+ save is nice it really doesn't seem to get me anywhere when people start throwing handfuls of dice at you.

That's what I was afraid of, I have around 36 termis (I have a problem...) and I really want them to be a great unit. Maybe gw will fax them soon to up their quality of life. I love the idea of my heavily armored termis plodding, dropping, or (shivera) teleporting onto the field amidst swift bikes and wolves.

I disagree (I know, shocking...) but I like TDAWG. They are great as a distraction and alpha strike.

I like to run this:

3x combi-weapon/stormshield, 1x combi-weapon/wolf claw, 1x combi-weapon/chain fist inside a drop pod with deathwind upgrade.

It is pretty cheap due to the free stormshields and they can do something after they fired their combi weapons. I like meltas because I have other units, but if you have a pure TDA army plasmas are good.

I would also recommend getting allies to get Grav-Centurions, which are basically bigger TDA.

A Land Raider is not bad either. AV14 is hard to move, even these days. A lucky shot will still finish it, but that is not a regularity.

One thing you need to remember, that you need good fire support to run TDA. Sicaran Battle Tanks, Centurions or Long Fangs with TDA leader are good for that.

Immersturm hit it on the head. I think that enforce, TDAWG are quite powerful. Free Storm Shields shine, cheap combi's, and they look so god damn cool!!

I also have a problem with TDA, I am nearing 50 of them currently, not including HQ/named characters... I started 5th Ed with LoganWing, from there it was down hill. Or up, depending on how you look at it!! HAHA

True, they are not comparable to TWC, but why would you do that?? They are different packs and serve different roles on the battle field. IMO, which yes is biased, they are the second best unit out of the codex for the reasons I mentioned above. Especially if you compare them to the last codex, which I think is a fair comparison. Just like the comparison of TWC between the two books.

End of Line

I have about a dozen WG Terminators with various weapons loadouts.  Some may now be less than optimal, but I love the way they look and they are fun to paint.

When I realized I had extra bits left from the two boxes I'd built, I ordered some legs and torsos and the few weapons/shoulders/helmets needed and I've got parts on the way to build a squad of Void Claws and a squad of Shieldbrothers, all for about 30% less than I'd have paid for two boxes at retail.

GK are not an objective army. They either do a shunt punch or play nemesis detachment (or both) to overload pressure on the opponent.

WG TDA do the same in their own way.

I can recommend two allies:

1. IG. A platoon gives you an excellent amount of smaller squads in one FOC slot together with their transports. They play the objective game and support the army high a spam of high S shots.

2. SM. Scouts in LSS are great for capturing. You also have access to Grav Cents which you can put into your pod to support TDA with MOAR DAKKA.
