Getting Started with the XIX

Ok so i'm about to embark on another Legion - that of the XIX having completed a significant amount of both XII and XX miniatures. I'll always add more toys to the World Eaters and Alpha Legion as I can't stay on one project for long but being a HUGE Raven Guard fan having collected them in 40k for a long time means that I'm stretching into their legion rules as my next long term project.

My questions is - what essential units do people consider for the RG? I know the standard 40 x Tacticals are a solid choice but what differentiates that choice from using say, 3 or 4 10 man assault units?

So far i have 3 x Drop Pods (from my 40K army and easily resused) a Jetbike Praetor modelled using Sammael and 10 MkIV assault marines. Where would you suggest i go from there? I know I need more troops to make them legal but suggestions will be very welcome!

Mor Deythan are probably the best RG unit along with the Dark Wing Storm Eagle (an SE with Stealth? Yes please!) so they would be a good addition; though they have no models yet.

Dark Furies are expensive but, if all upgraded with Raven Talons (thus a 10 man squad costing ~400points @_@), you have 3-4 MC, Rending, Shred LC attacks on the Charge per marine. With all that rending, even 2+ units will have a hard time.

2x20 man tac blobs is enough for any legion. Depending on how you build, you might only end up using half of them as compulsory troops.

Jetbikes are a decent investment but, due to their cost, you might want to get a JB Primus Medicae (FNP) at the very least and maybe another consul such as a Chaplain or Librarian for added support. Downside is, it makes the unit an even bigger target.

However, with Squad wide Melta Bombs, up to 3 Volkite Culverins (Best Option imo) and 6+ Heavy Bolters (depending on HQ attachments) they make for a pretty good unit when you consider that they'll be (with a PM) 2+ T5, FNP + Jetbike Speeds while HQ's will be T5 TEQs with 2-3x the speed of terminators.

These will break the bank though, a unit of 3 legit FW bikes costing ~72 Pounds (you have 3 pounds per bike by buying them this way) :x

Talk to, among other RG fans, Nusquam about 30k RG - easiest place to find other RG would be in their Tactica thread: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/290168-raven-guard-tactics/

I only ever use 2x 10 Tacs w/ Extra CCW.

Mor Deythan and the Darkwing are amazing and always make back their points in my game.

Biggest thing to remember, if you use the RoW, you only get 1 HS so I usually use either the Sicaran or Whirlwind Scorpius

Cheers both, some good thoughts. I think I will invest in some Mor Deythan shortly. Thinking Combi-weapons (plasmas) will be a lovely choice and can use the MkVI conversion pack.

I do love the Jetbikes so that's another solid choice to add to the shopping list :)

I feel honoured! I agree with everything Slip said. It's hard for me to make a list without a unit of Mor Deythan. I've had a lot of success with combi-flamers. Fatal Strike gives them Rending, and psuedo-shred from twinlinking a template, and they already ignore cover. The Sniper version is also solid, much better than Recon Marines. Another unit I love are Seekers. Take our RoW and put them in a Pod. Expensive but brutally effective. Dark Furies, while expensive are very points efficient. As far as troops go, I usually take x2 10man tac squads with a vex. The rest is put into maximizing alpha strike potential and mobility. Especially since Mor Deythan are now scoring and Seekers always were. Our Moritats are sneaky as well, give them the Phasewalker relic, infiltrate in a good spot and go to town.

Our Characters are also top notch. In normal games I always take Maun. His rules offer great synergy. The new Delegatus Consul also offers us a way to get our RoW in smaller games where going first is huge and most of Mauns rules may be useless. Speaking of new consuls; the other new one the Praevian forms a unit of battle-Class automata and if you're  RG the automata gain infiltrate and fleet. Surprise giant robots!

Kaedes Nex is the king of moritats. His name even translates to "Murder and Death".

A Fire Raptor is a good choice too. Can target 4 units a turn and has effective weapons, always opt for the Autocannons.

I would go with chapter house studios combi weapons on your mor deythan. Then you can just mix it up.

You are also going to want to do a man and a nex

I use anvil industries myself. I bought two squads of their "Alpha Strikers" units for my Mor Deythan.

I've started a living tactica for RG on my blog, where you can find some 30k modeling and painting too if you want to take a look.

The ones from AA come with premade holes for magnets and you can purchase them along with the kits. More bang for your buck and great quality too. The amount of time I recommend them I feel like I should get paid for it ha. I've also had horrible experiences with Chapter House personally so I avoid them.

Just had a look at AA stuff - look really good actually as a fit for the Mor Deythan. I'm currently pricing up getting the 30 man tactical bundle to give me a solid base for troops and then I can start playing with toys. I figure with those and thee three drop pods I have ready to go that gives me enough to form a solid base.

Nusquam - your blog on the tactics is a great read and I think the key takeaway for me was flexiblity so I will diversify but I think some infiltrating and some dropping in fits my mass Alpha strike approach.

One question I did have for everyone was the merits of Terminators? I like the idea of Tartaros pattern ones for some heavy hitters and if Corax is used they could be scary quick with a 6" run (rather than using Cataphractii) Would a Spartan with 10 of those be a solid Elites choice or does this feel a bit too un-Raven Guard like I wonder?

I think using the ROW a Fire Raptor makes great sense. I've got one so luckily I can proxy until I can afford another so I can assess the benefits!

True.

Thank ye.

There are a few examples of LRs and Spartans in Book 3. They're definitely not bad bad but since our termis miss out on infiltrate there's no shenanigans to be found with a Spartan DT unless you attach an IC and outflank. But the rest of the army could could infiltrate or pod in around them to support them. It's not they can't be good, they just suffer from "other legions can do them better" syndrom. There are a lot of stories about some legionaries sneaking in and using a beacon to teleport Termis. Wish there was some wargear that did that.
