Need help with deciding rank names

I like making background for my force as much as I like playing with it (which is good since I haven't had a game in 2 years).

However I need some help in organising my force. I have the basic organisation sorted out, I just need some help with names for ranks within the cohort.

Here is what I have so far:

Cohort

Command elements

Praetor

Honour guard

Senior command officers

Armour, Reconnaissance, Siege, Fleet, Line, Ancient

Plus command staff for each officer

Other command elements

20 phoenix guard

Palatine blades (numbers vary between 5 and 20)

Probati captain

Primus medicae and 10 apocarthcary

Master of the forge and 15 tech marines

Centuria I

Centurion

Command squad

5 10 strong terminator units

Centuria II through V

Centurion

Command squad

Two battalions of:

2 20 strong tactical squads

1 10 strong support squad

1 20 strong assault squad

1 10 strong heavy weapon squad

Centuria VI

Centurion

Command squad

5 10 strong jet bike squads

10 land speeders

Auxillia

Armoury

10 land raiders (assorted)

40 rhinos

5 predator squadrons

2 sicaran squadrons

Reconnaissance

6 10 strong recon squads

2 10 strong seeker squads

Siege

3 20 strong breacher squads

4 basilisk batteries

2 Medusa batteries

2 whirlwind batteries

1 scorpius battery

4 rapier batteries

Fleet

VIII cohort (centurion, command squad and 180 marines for ship protection and boarded. Multi specialisms including tactical, support and breacher)

1 assault barge

3 strike cruisers

1 heavy cruiser

4 cruisers

30 escorts

1 forge ship

Ancient

6 contemptor patten hulls

4 mark IV pattern hulls

Probati battalion

Destroyers (numbers vary due to regulation infringements)

Ignoring vehicle crews I have about a chapters worth of marines in my order of battle (and one day in my collection) which seems like a good number for small legion force leading an expedition.

What I need help with is rank names for the lower officers.

Each squad will have a senior and junior officer, with the junior officer taking charge of half of the squad in some battles (when I take two smaller squads rather than maxing out a single choice)

I don't know what to call them.

Also the tactical squads and assault squad will also have two further lower ranking officers in charge of 5 man sections.

So in concluding. I need help in deciding ranks for the senior officers in each squads, his second. And in the cases of 20 man squads, ranks for squad leaders (maybe squad leader will be a good candidate).

Thanks for the help.

You seem to be using a Roman Command Structure therefore as far as I'm aware the senior sergeant (Command Squad) of each century would be an Optio, the squad leader would be a Decanus (literally leader of ten; although in the roman army leader of eight.) Not aware of what the assistant squad leader would be Sub-Decanus perhaps?

Reading further Decanus was the first rank step in the Roman Army so there would be no formal title for an assistant squad leader.

Hope this helps.

Assuming from the inclusion of Phoenix Guard that the Legion you're using is the IIIrd  , images in Betrayal identify EC Legionaries as bearing the ranks of Prefector (the marine in question is a member of the Phoenix Guard, although this is also the name given to the squad leader in the Palantine Blades unit profile), Decanus (this guy served as an Equerry to Fulgrim) & Decurio (who is described as a 'strike leader' at sub-company level).

Also, this might be useful:

Yep I am using the glorious IIIrd.

I think I will be going for

Breacher, tactical and assult units

First sergeant, sergeant and two prefectors

Support , squads, jet bike, recon and seekers

Sergeant, prefectors

Terminators and veteran squads

First sergeant and prefectors.

Of course on top of that you still have legion politics that come into play.

A terminator or veteran prefectors could outrank a sergeant from the other cohorts.

And the first sergeant of the first battalion of a cohort "out ranks" the other first sergeants in his cohort.

Plus the cohorts will have pecking orders.
