30k Points Value "Goldilocks Zone"

I wonder what other groups or players preferred points values are? The books tell us that 1,750-3,500 is the best range, but I feel that towards the lower end it just doesn't feel right. I see most often 2-3k lists.

What do you play the most and what do you feel is the best range?

I play 2.5-3k list the most often. I usually brainstorm lists at 2.5k and scale up or down 500 or so points(usually up). I find that range to be optimal for me.

What about everyone else?

Our Campaign is currently running in the 4.5k Points range and is likely to go up to 5k+ with expansions :P

Personally, I feel the most comfortable at 2.5k-3k As well. Lets you take a good amount of toys while not having to account for the REALLY big toys - most of the time.

I hate the artificial points bloat that comes from the point tax system. The baseline of many armies is 40 marines, 2 Apothecaries, and a Centurion. That is 750pts straight away gone. And all you have to show for it is Bolters and 2 units. Even with baseline units, though, you are spending 350pts on Bolters. That is 400points left for goodies, but all armies look very similar at that level. This is where Mechanicum and SAuxilia shine because they can be varied. But compare 350-400pts in 40k and you get a much more varied capability of units, with special or heavy weapons, or transports. When playing vs 30k though, that point tax serves no purpose. After all, that is the idea to play 30k only. If both players have a 350pt tax that are both filled with exactly the same units, what use is that tax?

The points cost of units is an artificial bloat making your collection of models seem like a great many more point than it is worth while limiting you from taking stuff that is fun to use in lower games, particularly in 40k-v-30k games.

For me, the sweet spot is 2500 pts. It gives you enough points to get some fun things, while not being so high that you can just eat that point tax and not worry which is a problem I found at 3k in that I could take anything I really wanted.

2000 points feels like 1850 of 40k equivalency. It's a great launching point an lets you build a solid list and get some redundancy.

2500 is probably the sweet spot, however, if playing with a LoW, it just feels like 2000 points plus a LoW rather than a larger game. I think 3000 might be "the best" without going into apocalypse. It allows you to get all the legion you could ever want, plus a sizable LoW.

2500-3000 points is the norm that I have seen.

As mentioned above, the most common troop selections are two 15- or 20-man tactical squads. Different color schemes aside, smaller games (less than 1500 points) end up being two carbon copies of the same army fighting each other. Above 1500 points is where you would get some variety.

I'm a bit of an outlier since I play mostly 30k in 40k, but I've found 1850 to be my favorite. You have to think hard about your choices, but can shore up most of the holes an army needs. I do a lot of 1500 too, but its pretty rough due to our expensive troops choices. It still works, but you really don't have much room to get creative.

I don't think I'll go over 2000 anytime soon though, unless I play strictly 30k.
