The Codex Magnus.

THE CODEX MAGNUS.

So here I go again, but this time it is not an army project. Ive been considering that I start so many projects and I paint a lot of minis not related to any armies, simply for the joy of painting so, I make this, my Codex Magnus, in which I will show off all the 40k / 30k related minis that I paint. Eventually I will probably start an XIIIth legion army and post progress on that here too.

Let me start by introducing this guy:

This is a captain Ive made using one of the finecast veterans, because they are awesome. I am going to paint him in the Hawk Lords colour scheme because I resently read about them and I thought they looked cool, they seemed like a mix of Ultramarines and Pre-heresy Emperor Children. I can imagine maybe they are descendents of loyalist Emperors Children who got introduced to the XIIIth legion, because their founding is not mentioned and they do look like the EC.

Anyways, thats what Im going for in that guy. Also, If I ever decide to make an army for that chapter I will already have a cool looking captain :P

And the next guy in line is this fella:

Just to make it fun, Im gonna post a riddle for you guys, if you answer correctly you get to choose what chapter he shall belong to! This is think is a fun way to go about painting, because I can get random colour schemes and enjoy trying something Ive never tried befor. So here goes the riddle, lets see who gets it:

Ripped from my mother's womb,

Beaten and burned,

I become a blood thirsty killer.

What am I?

Try not to cheat people ;) I hope you enjoy this idea.

The iron used to make a sword? The womb is earth, beaten and burned refers to the forging process and the blood thirsty killer indicates it's a pointy death stick?

I like your captain. I could definitely see him being of EC descent.

Keep up the good work.

Indeed it is. An Iron Ore. So, I started easy, but its all for fun, right?

Anyways... Brother Dallo, which chapter shall he be!?

I didn't think it was that easy... Took me a few minutes anyway. I think it's only fair that for an iron based riddle, you should paint an iron based chapter. Initially I was going to suggest an Iron Hand, but that struck me as too obvious. So I give you a choice. Either an Iron Snake, or a Son of Medusa. Perhaps you could put it to a vote?

I'm looking forward to it either way.

Keep up the good work.

Any thoughts?

Don't know if it's just the camera, but he looks red. Well painted red, I'll give you, but red. I thought he was going to be purple, as he's a Hawk Lord. unsure.png

I'd suggest painting the purity seal a different colour to that of his armour.

Regardless, he's looking well, so keep up the good work.

I used screamer pink as the base, so it is purple. Might be the lighting then. The purity seal is actually not painted, I just forgot painting it black along with the rest. I was thinking going for a blue purity seal? Any thoughts on that?

I will try to get some better pictures of the colours.

Blue could work. Going from the colour wheel, yellow would be directly opposite, so makes for a good contrast colour. Having said that, I'm not sure how good a bright yellow purity seal would look. So maybe consider an amber-y beeswax-y colour?

Just a thought.

Took a new picture with clearer lighting, as you can see it is purple. It is a Hawk Lord, I PROMISE! tongue.png

Please disregard the tabard, still working on it.

I both love and hate finecast. The details are crisp and beautiful, but man the bloody air bubbles are annoying. Also, I hate taking pictures because you can see all the mistakes much clearer and makes me feel bad unsure.png

So, having been challenged by brother Black_out to make an Angels of Redemption combat squad I present to you the first work in progress picture, pre-priming. Warning though, the pictures are not great.

I present, squad Black Out, the bad boys of the Angels of Redemption. Also known as B-Squad :P

Black_Out: Of course, brother! You challenged me, didnt you? It only seemed fitting to name them after you :P

Kizzdougs: Thank you Kizz, purple is a colour I really love but its also quite dificult to paint, so it was a nice challenge to give myself. So far, Im not yet convinced, I think it needs a bluer hue and maybe some better highlighting.

I have no update right now, Ive spend the last 3 days working on the captains freaking tabard and I didnt get the shade I wanted until yesterday :P If I have time I will start undercoating Squad Black Out and keep working on the tabard, I will of course post some pics.

And while at work today I came up with a really cool, if rather unfluffy, idea for a Kill Team. Think about the Expendables or DC Comics Suicide Squad, but for space marines. Think of a squad that serves the Inquisition and is made up with the most dishonorable and downright evil space marines of the various chapters around the Imperium. Maybe a Dark Angel who has told someone about their secret, or an Ultramarine who has dishonoured the codex so many times the Chapter Master doesnt know what to do anymore, but still they are both exceptional warriors and executing them would be a waste. So they are recruited to this kill team and sent to the most hellish warzones and suicide missions.

I think that could be cool, Im gonna be pondering a bit around the idea, thinking of colour schemes (metallic would be nice...) and such.
